So I've been carless for about 2 months now, running around in the Maestro.

Now I have a friend called Andy....who owns and runs a Rover 420T GSI chucking out about 250bhp...

He decided a few months ago 250 wasn't enough and decided to hit it with the modding stick again so bought a non runner Rover 216 coupe for peanuts, fixed it and has been smoking about in it for a couple of months. He's now decided he wants a faster daily run around whilst he is working on his 420T so has bought another 420T lol, again a non runner...so it's left the coupe spare.

I asked him how much for the coupe, we agreed a price, and I should be picking it up this side of christmas :D

Went to see it yesterday and I really like it! Have found a leather interior for it with recaro bolsters in good condition for peanuts (which is now on it's way to me), it has electric windows and a few others bits...and best of it, the Honda 1.6 engine so should be uber reliable which is exactly what I need right now :)

He's also fitted a Mongoose catback system so it sounds nice

Also has the T-Top sun roof which I think is very cool!

Anyway, here's a pic or 2 of it from my mates facebook, I'll post a couple more when I get it and give it a clean!

When I get it it won't have the MG wheels on it so I'll stick mine on, also I've read the rear suspension off my car and the front springs off my car will fit, lowering it and improving the handling a lot, but I need to double check on this.

Either way I'm pretty excited about it :)

nice, ive had 4 of these

one with the 1.6 honda d series as yours is

one 2.0

one 2.0 turbo

Absolute machines

You can however uprate your 120bhp single cam honda, by fitting the 150bhp twin cam, or even the b series v tec!

lovely

I won't be doing any engine swaps! :p

However, any cheeky mods for more bhp would be appreciated :D

It is the model commonly known as the tomcat.

The coupe is the Tomcat mate, same thing. Lovely car mate, great colour. The coupe was very nearly an MG, by the way, but management chose to focus on the F and felt the R8 Coupe wasn't different enough from the normal hatch and saloon.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the car was actually every officially called "the Tomcat".

Nice car Jake, love em! Tomcat was the project name and kinda stuck as they also used that name for the one make race series when launched, mostly aimed at the turbo version. I'd suggest you hide your keys this time ;)

its common name was the tomcat. And people get confused about the trga roof, they all had it

phate has it got the glass panel bag in the boot? good if it has.

A filter next to the battery is a good mod, then de cat it brings the power along nicely.

Certainly looks tidy! Am quite envious, I looked at a couple before I got the ZS but they were all dogs :(

Isn't that powered by the 108bhp SOHC D16? (Think they had a slightly different map on them than the ones put into Honda's - Should look something like this (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/terrysara/v%20tec/Image017.jpg))

If so, the general consensus is that a 'performance' panel filter in the standard airbox is the best way forward (with a cold air feed to the box), as the small non-vtec engines hate heat soak and really don't need a huge cone :)

Decat is certainly an option, but won't get you much in the way of power.. Just a bit more noise and that beautiful decat smell! :)

I had the Z9 in one of my CRX's, they're great little engines and are surprisingly nippy!

I doubt you'll want to keep it stock for long, and the only quick ways of getting lots of power is to turbo, or swap something B18+ into it :cowboy:

hehe thanks guys :)

Interesting stuff Will...I want to keep it stock for reliability reasons but at the same time I do have a modding bug :(

It's got the standard filter on it, when Andy bought it it had a cone, put the standard on it and found it to be quicker and sound nicer...makes sense due to the heat soak.

i have always had soft spot for the tomcats, always have a nose around them if i spot any while on foot.

if it weren't for the fact that i wanted diesel nearly 5 years ago now i would prob have got one!

My first CRX (had a DOHC D16) had a crappy cone on it when I got it, first thing I did was to put the original airbox on with a K&N panel filter.. The sound and pickup change was really quite shocking!

With your exhaust, and a couple of other tweaks you should easily get it to 120bhp.. Which considering it's a SOHC 1.6 is actually quite good :)

I'm not too clued up on the Z2, but I think you can swap the head/ecu from the Z9 onto it and get eco-vtec? The D16Z9 had 130bhp out of the box..

Tomcat was the name for the coupe turbo Hence "Rover Tomcat Turbo" all the other were just called the coupe,

nice car by the way :bounce: i think they look cool with the straights on these, wish i still had my turbo one sometimes, but got into too much trouble with it lol

Iv had one of these, a 220 turbo, the oil return pipe from the turbo used to leak and everytime i booted it would leave oil smoke inside and behind, the only prob i had with it was the chassis twisted under the torque of the engine and ripped it apart from the bulk head to the end of the chassis leg, had it welded up, i loved it tho, i used to wind so many cars up with it when out and about as it was 200+bhp, then i got myself a 420gsi turbo, a light blue colour one that had been heavily modded and been on ebay a hundred times, i shouldnt of bought it as it caused no end of trouble, but i learnt from my mistakes :innocent:

One of the few cars that look stunning standard, no need for doing up apart from maybe wheels and lowering slightly. Very nice.

When I saw it on Sunday it's back on it's standard and normal ride height. MG wheels definately going on and definately going to lower it, looks so much better. Apart from that, not really going to touch it looks wise....

Saying that I can see me having it for quite a while and then next year keeping it and getting a fun weekend car like an Elise :D - Will be fitting the leather seats (which have now turned up) and my bluetooth kit and head unit...for starters :)
