hmm... i wonder if they asked him to stop/open window before they smashed it.

although it says something about the thickness of glass in those range rovers... it took a hell of a beating before it broke!

I read somewhere that he'd hit a policeman at some point. Will be interesting to find out the full story. Looks OTT from what's on the BBC though.

There must be more to this story than mentioned.

Even if the chap did something wrong I cannot see how that action is justified, that to me is a criminal offence in itself. Guess we need to hear the full story to see how it got this far.

It happened fairly local to me, it seems that he was stopped for not wearing a seatbelt initially, so he did stop, and then it seems there was some confusion and the guy assumed the police had finished with him, so he drove off.

The reaction is completely out of proportion, I mean ffs he's a 70 year old.

.....
If that had been my grandad/Dad in some cases id have been out to do a Raoul Moat on the officers in question.....
Rant Over

No need for that. That was a completely unprovoked attack by a murderous thug, on a father who will never see his family again. You're out of order.

It does appear that they have over-reacted if they knew the facts that we all do now. I have no doubt that as soon as the guy was out of the car, there was a real "Oh Sh1t" moment.

I'm not gonna try to justify it. There are few ifs and buts.

Bottom line is that the footage we are all looking at is from a police car and has been given over to the IPCC to investigate. That demonstrates the changes within the service towards openness and discipline. If the officers are found to be in the wrong - they will be criminally prosecuted and if found guilty face bigger sentences than everyone else - and rightly so.

Even if found not guilty within a criminal court - beyond reasonable doubt - the officers then face a - balance of probabilities - trial and will no doubt lose their jobs for bringing the service into disrepute.

It doesn't matter how much good is done on a daily basis - one incident like this damages everything.

That is bad. Just shows that cops have been watching too many of them american car programmes and its gone to there heads!
I can guarantee they will get let off, just like a local cop who was clocked at 145 for being late for work.......

"Mr Whatley, of Usk, Monmouthshire, who is disabled, drove off at Cwmbran last September, allegedly knocked one of the officers, after police attempted to issue him with a fixed penalty notice.

The pensioner appeared at a two-day trial before Caerphilly magistrates court.

He was found guilty of not wearing a seatbelt, of failing to stop and of having tinted windows that did not conform to legal requirements.

He was cleared of another charge of failing to stop after an accident."

I wonder what the failing to stop element was, if it was a proper pursuit then the actions don't seem as bad as first thought, especially if he had hit a police officer.

If he pulled over of his own free will then it puts a different light on things. I take it Range Rover doors lock automatically as you drive off as the doors were locked when the officers tried to get in.

If he actually knocked a police officer down while he sped off I can't see them dropping that charge - as it's fecking serious. So, did that happen?

The guy is obviously wrong taking off when he was still being dealt with, and if he was genuinely confused and thought a police car following him with lights and siren's were 'escorting him home' then he shouldn't be on the road.

Smashing his window, jumping on his bonnet stamping on the windscreen, and dragging him out of the car when he stopped himself seems excessive in the extreme. Not sure if there are any more details to come out? Not heard the police officers' side of the story yet.

It's a difficult offence to prove.

The (common) defence is that the driver didn't know that it had happened. The prosecution must prove beyond reasonable doubt that the driver knew the accident happened and despite knowing this - failed to stop.

Where a pedestrian is hit, it's hard to prove unless witnesses see someone going over the bonnett as there is rarely any damage to the vehicle that fails to stop - or serious injury occurs. It's often the defence used by HGV drivers as an impact is so ineffective on bigger vehicles.

Without every detail we can not make any fair assumptions. There clearly is more to this and but again the media only say what they want to say to get viewers interest and invoke reactions. You wouldn't take any notice of an article if it didn't cause some reaction from yourself.

You'd be surprised, I dealt with a fatal collision where a van crossed on to the wrong side of the road and killed a taxi driver coming the other way. CPS dropped it before it even got to court.
