So thought since I fitted the VIS indicators, I'd give it a wash and take a couple of pics before any work gets done as a starting point....

Smokey

Dont worry, although this one will be stripped and thrashed, next year, after the wedding, I plan on getting a MK2 which will get the full luxury treatment!

Smokey

Well am in talks with a supplier of my vinyls. Because I am not looking for an exact replica, more a mix of ideas from various versions we are ironing out the details. Watch this space....

Well tried to do a few things with the car today and stumbled into problem after problem!

Firstly decided to paint the calipers, got one wheel off, then on trying to get the second wheel off, the locking key destroyed itself leaving me with no way of getting 3 locking nuts off! Its not even a common nut as its round with 2 notches cut out.
Can I assume a garage will be able to get them off for me?

Secondly I went to remove the power vis and 2 screws were rusted....the vis motor was easily removed but now left with two screws (with no heads) jammed in the holes, not even pliers can get at them!

Supercharged_Z
09-10-10, 10:21 PM
your need to whack a smaller socket over the locking wheel nut... and it will come of... common prob to be fair..

i have a mk2 set of locker for sale if intrested (with key obv)

Smokey
09-10-10, 10:24 PM
Tried the hammer trick but they are on solid! Had to use an extending tyre iron to get enough leverage to remove the first 4 bolts!

Will attempt again with that method, but dont hold much hope. I still have my mk2 nuts from my previous Zed, but cheers for the offer.

peterzs
09-10-10, 10:26 PM
Where is Ritchy when you need him!!!

Nothing easy working on cars, always say to the wife, take half an hour, 2 hours later--------------------.

Think an ex MG garage will have sets of locking nuts that should get them off.

All the best with it, sounds a bit of a whatsit.

Penetrating fluid then mole grips on the screws Smokey?

whats happened to smokeys nuts (parden the pun) is the locking tool/nut has rounded. which is common.. if its a 19mm then u need to wack on a 18 mm

Maxxed_Ross
10-10-10, 06:49 AM
Last time that happened to jme the local garage welded a bolt onto the locking nut and used that to remove it

a very clever idea!

Do you mean the remains of the screws are stuck in the hols of teh VIS motors or stuck into the actual plenum? :)

Smokey
10-10-10, 11:08 AM
Stuck in thr holes in the engine bay sadly!

Maxfly

Stuck in thr holes in the engine bay sadly!

The more technical minded will have a better answer but could you, using a stanley blade trim enough plastic away from the remains of the screw to get at them with a set of baby mole grips and unscrew them using that but still leaving enough behind to not cause any air leaks and so that fresh screw could still bite in? :)

Jay-ZS+
10-10-10, 12:10 PM
Could try cutting a groove in the top and use a small screwdriver to get it out. Or get some WD40 and heat on it. Ive got a mini blow torch/ soldering iron that works well for those little jobs.

Maxxed_Ross
10-10-10, 01:01 PM
you don't have much luck with VIS valves do you lol. Remember the chaos that time we tried to swap yours for mine haha

Smokey
10-10-10, 03:22 PM
I certainly am not having much luck so far lol

stamford
11-10-10, 08:31 AM
Get some pics up so we can see the extent of the problem, will be easier to assist and give advice.

Maxxed_Ross
11-10-10, 09:25 PM
I'm sure Dreadnought have a tool for taking out broken wheel nuts, so it might work on this.

Might be worth a call to find out

Smokey
12-10-10, 01:23 PM
Wee update on the VIS valves.

It appears that its the balance (rear one) that is not working. Would I be right in saying that the balance is the same as the power in respect that when you turn the ignition, they BOTH should reset to default position, allowing for refitting?

If this is the case, the power one is fine but the balance on has no motor turning when I turn the ignition?

Discuss :D

stamford
12-10-10, 01:44 PM
Yep, if the unit has moved away from the homing position, as if it were stripped and re-assembled with the cam in mid-position, it should 'home' itself. Suspect a faulty motor, because it should rotate in either direction depending on which switch it is looking for. If the switch was faulty then the motor would continue rotating as there would be no signal to stop it.

Smokey
12-10-10, 01:53 PM
Thats what I thought :( Will have it out again and give it another attempt but I think Nor is going to assist with a replacement so will see how that goes too!

Still need to remove the damn screw from the manifold first though!

Smokey
14-10-10, 06:12 PM
Well the screw issue has not been resolved yet but I refitted my repaired Power motor and my new Balance motor courtesy of Nor as tight as I could and took a test run. Kick is now there at 3k and the vis indicator is showing the correct sequence!!

Now to drill out those damn screws for a permanent fix!

Jay-ZS+

17-10-10, 12:04 PM

Smokey
17-10-10, 12:12 PM

Smokey

Should do Kev, they seem pretty wide, hopefully be here for Saturday if you're still coming.
And possible 7th November Corey, if I can get the day off.

Smokey
22-10-10, 02:49 PM
Well, bucket seats arrived today! Although a wee bit tighter than I thought they would be so will need to test it out Kev... I get in but is only tight around the hips.

Have also removed the rear seats and passenger seat in between the rain but don't have the correct tool to remove the subframes.

Would I be right in saying its not possible to change where the subframe bolts in to by drilling into the floor?

Oh and can someone find me XPower green 3 point harnesses? I cant find any! Only red/blue/black/silver

stamford
22-10-10, 03:53 PM
I would recommend using the existing fixing points and use the seat runners off the old seats. However, what is the seat mounting type you have bought, flat bottom or side?

Smokey
22-10-10, 04:12 PM
I'm not sure of the difference. The bottom has 4 points for the bolts. It's not a solid flat base though, you can feel the springs through the material.

stamford
22-10-10, 08:17 PM
So you will be needing 2 off strips of mild steel which bolt to the bottom of the seat, these inturn will need to drilled and bolted to the OE runners. If I was closer to you I would do this for you.

Smokey
22-10-10, 09:06 PM
Yeah this is what I figured, cheers for the offer wish I was closer!

stamford
22-10-10, 09:40 PM
I would say it is easy to do, but not everyone has access to the right tools.

All you need to do is:

Measure the runner pitch before removing from car.
Strip OE seat so you end up with both floor mounted runners. Beware as the adjuster will let go due to the spring.
Remove all unnecesary metalwork, even the brackets for the seatbelts if these are not to be re-used.
Get 2 off strips of mild steel flat bar, 30x6mm x length enough to go across the runner pitch width flush to outside.
Mark out and position the seat fixing holes central, drill to suit, if M8 fixings drill dia 9mm.
Lay both flat bar lengths across the runners, check for fixings that could be used. You may need to remove some studding as they might not be long enough to bolt through. Replace with longer bolts and ideally nyloc nuts. If replacing bolts in the runner use hex socket head cap screws.
When you are happy with the positioning of the seat and mounting strips, mark out and drill clearance holes. Make sure the pitch is correct first.
Once done deburr the holes and offer up to car, check position and adjust if necessary, you can always open the hole up a bit if you are slightly out.
Then if all's good paint them up and tighten the joint ups when dry and fit to floor.
The seat can still be adjusted for front/back by pushing the sprung loaded latches down on each runner, this was used from the OE seat mechanism, it's only the through rod that's missing.

Would be wise to wear safety glasses when drilling, a drop of WD40 to aid cutting, a vice is also a useful tool or a ?10 workmate from Wilko will do fine ;) Oh and a decent tape measure.

Well today Grimmy took the trip to sunny Dunning in order to replace his axis interior for my red monogram interior.

Firstly, here is my completely stripped out car:

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/IMG_0152.jpg

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/IMG_0153.jpg

We removed Grimmy's seats and fitted my seats with very little hassle:

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/IMG_0156.jpg

I test fitted one of my bucket seats to get a feel for its new look:

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/IMG_0155.jpg

I had also painted the engine cover and oil cap green so this was fitted today:

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/IMG_0154.jpg

And, something shiny caught Grimmy's eye that would lift his interior even more so I happily removed them and took his plastic ones, really makes a huge difference to Grimmy's car:

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/IMG_0157.jpg

All in all it's been a great day and even managed to get the threee offending locking wheel nuts off and Grimmy supplied me with some Mazda replacements.

So it's a big cheers to Grimmy for coming along, enjoyed working on the car with someone to have banter with!

grimmy
23-10-10, 06:18 PM
Yeah was a good day that. well done the met office for getting the weather wrong and as Smokey says a lovely sunny day in dunning and a big cheers for the seats and the kick plates it really has transformed the inside of the car and I am well pleased.the track car look like it's going to be awesome and even my fat ass gets into the bucket seats yay looking forward to seeing the progress on the car in the future

Smokey
23-10-10, 09:06 PM
Yup, can't wait to get the livery now, will put the car within my target then. Once they are on it will look like the track car I have in my head.

Just need to get brackets sorted for seats (this week) and harnesses ordered and that will be it for the moment.

After that, will get it through it's MOT then get back box to compliment the decat an sort out induction. Also need spare straights at some point.

Ritchy
23-10-10, 09:29 PM
looks cracking in grimmys car, another car converted to mazda nuts then lol, would love to be able to come up give you a hand with it but been a bit stuffed for time:(

grimmy
23-10-10, 09:37 PM
Hope to give the car a clean tomorrow and clean up the interior a bit.will get some photos on the go, I am very happy with it only slight problem is the connectors for the seat air bags are different

Ritchy
23-10-10, 09:48 PM

Looking good mate did it bring the seat height up much from where we had it sitting on saturday

Smokey
26-10-10, 01:41 PM
sure did, still lower than I am used to but feels more 'racey' lol

stamford
26-10-10, 01:45 PM
Easy enough job isn't it. Kathy has to have a cushion as she finds the seats way too low! She can barely see over the wiper!

Smokey
26-10-10, 01:50 PM
Only down side is I had to lose the slide mechanism as it prevented the seat sitting properly.

I managed to move the seat back by pushing the two clips in but think it will be a two person job to slide it forward as I failed on my own!

Lucky I'm tall and need it right back!

peterzs
26-10-10, 02:04 PM

Advantage to car being stripped- I now have rear speakers (which Smokey fitted while I was at college) so no more door rattle :mml:

grimmy
01-11-10, 06:46 PM
Poor wee micra must be twice the weight now with those heavy speakers in it.

Smokey
01-11-10, 06:52 PM
Makes my 180 that little lighter lol!

Further to that, I also got the second seat mounted and bolted in so now looks ace!

Just awaiting harnesses now and it will be close to complete.

Got copper grease too Grimmy so will fix that sticky rear brake.

Am concerned it wont be ready for track day but doing my best. Although the way weather is being just now, probably wont get a decent day for it!

coreygraham180

Smokey
01-11-10, 07:40 PM
Sadly my works night out is on the 20th Nov also which is a ****** as yes I would have come along!

EDIT:

Night out is December! What time is the meet though as I have kids lol? I read the thread but doesn't seem confirmed as yet.

Also not sure if finances will strech to bowling though, especially if I get on the track for 7th November!

coreygraham180
01-11-10, 07:59 PM

On the roads There I wouldnae dae mare than that I ment that that is a zs playground of corners twists and bends lol

Smokey
02-11-10, 06:18 PM
Well rear parcel shelf and all seatbelts have been removed so now I await the harness arrival.

Also greased the sticky rear caliper which seems to have helped.

I sprayed another couple of engine bits green too so will get pics up when I fit them on again!

Hoping my livery arrives in the next couple of days as it is all bought and paid for :D

Smokey
03-11-10, 07:08 PM
Ok, so harness arrived today and all was well until I tried to put the final bolt in.

This is the one that goes through the original subframe and into the floor same as Leigh's:
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb143/lthornton2/Stoof/IMG_0327.jpg

Problem being, the original bolt is tapered and therefore the hole narrows the deeper it goes (also the thread is a fraction wider I think)

So how do I get the bolt in, as brute force seems to be failing!?

Jay-ZS+
03-11-10, 07:12 PM
Best way would prob be to tap it out to the size needed.

coreygraham180
03-11-10, 07:16 PM
Best way would prob be to tap it out to the size needed.

Yeeh if u have a tap set I would go a intermediate tap first then the fine one

Smokey
03-11-10, 07:36 PM
I dont have a tap set :( Just a drill :P

coreygraham180
03-11-10, 07:38 PM
I don't either or I would have offered u it

Jay-ZS+
03-11-10, 07:39 PM
If it wasnt holding in a seat belt id suggest drilling it out 0.5mm small then just brute force approach

Jay-ZS+
03-11-10, 07:43 PM
could always get one use it, carefully put it back in the case and take it back. ;)

Smokey
03-11-10, 07:43 PM
That was my initial though but as you say, is holding a seatbelt!

Surely enough brute force should eventually get it in?!?

coreygraham180
03-11-10, 07:46 PM
That was my initial though but as you say, is holding a seatbelt!

Surely enough brute force should eventually get it in?!?

It is a eye u are tryin to get in isn't it well try and fit a pipe or pole in it and u might see a better result hopefully

Jay-ZS+
03-11-10, 07:53 PM
Thing is brute force could just destroy the thread giving little holding it in. A garage would prob do it for a few quid.

Smokey
03-11-10, 07:54 PM
huh? say again?

coreygraham180
03-11-10, 07:58 PM
It might wreak the threads which are then more able to collapse then come out Completely but would be pretty tough to do ........... But not impossible

Smokey
03-11-10, 08:03 PM
Hmmm, don't want to damage the threads too much as it will stop it gripping....Its so frustrating as it's only the one bolt and the taper is like 5mm roughly!!

coreygraham180
03-11-10, 08:06 PM
The treads are clean in the hold and they aren't crossing are they???

Just thinking if taking a wee bit off the eye bit do any better

Smokey
03-11-10, 08:12 PM
Not tackling it tonight anyway, maybe tomorrow after work, although it will be dark. Want it in ASAP though!

coreygraham180
03-11-10, 08:19 PM
Do u think that it will make the 7th or will it be postponed to the 5 th of December

Smokey
03-11-10, 08:21 PM
Well Grimmy cant make the 7th, I am currently still working that day but if I get the day off and get this bolt in, then I can go. If I cant go due to these reasons or weather etc then I will probably go to the Scottish meet.

Well Grimmy cant make the 7th, I am currently still working that day but if I get the day off and get this bolt in, then I can go. If I cant go due to these reasons or weather etc then I will probably go to the Scottish meet.

Well I am going to the Scottish but I am working Sunday too

Smokey

Yeah Sunday may be a negative, unless I get the day off. But with the vinyl's arriving this week I'll be busy with that too! (might need to borrow your carport?!)

Have decided to use the original seatbelt clip bracket to fix harnesses (waste of 2 long bolts!) so am waiting on Grimmy removing the one I need and posting it (top man) and I will be fully harnessed in. Will also order the passenger one as I am happy with the one I have.

Furthermore, I got my new reg plates in the post as the originals were beginning to got black round the edges so will get them on soon too.

Loads of wee things to do but the fundamentals are done!

And Grimmy, the copper grease did the trick...no more scraping from rear caliper!!

grimmy
03-11-10, 09:24 PM
Glad you got the brakes sorted mate I will take the bracket off soon as and maybe we could meet up halfway and I could give you the bracket and maybe save some time instead of posting

Smokey
03-11-10, 09:37 PM
Sounds like a plan, although may be cheaper if I just pay the postage (plus I cant drive the car with only 2 points bolted in on the harness). If you send it next day delivery I will reimburse the cost :)

Well the vinlys have come finally!
Plus side, seem good quality and all the bits are there.
Down side, the green is a shade lighter than I expected but will see what it looks like when fitted.
Also sunstrip is wrong but easily corrected.

Just a quick note. Is the vinyl thick or thin? The thin stuff, believe it or not is actually the better quality vinyl.

Well here's today's progress on the livery.

I'm no professional installer so there are quite a few bubbles and nicks but if you don't look close it looks great.

Opinions so far?

Cheers guys. Kat just spent almost an hour with a hairdryer sticking the MG logo down, legend.

Still unsure about tomorrow as it may be wet or icy plus only have half a livery which might look a tad silly but will see how I feel in the morning and I finish work at 3am!

Marcus, pm your number mate and I'll give you a heads up.

Thanks guys, well mixed emotions yesterday. Didn't finish work til 4am so decided it safer not to got to track and instead finished the livery. All that needs added is the sunstrip which shoul have been black with www.theMGZS.co.uk but instead reads TheMGZS.co.uk so that is being corrected and will be sent out soon.

I have left spaces on the rear window and both front wings for large site stickers and have various spots for smaller ones ( as this is theMGZS.co.uk track car, no other forums will be advertised :) )

on the down side drove to fife and back and when I Almost reached home the car died completely. Jim and Corey, absolute legends, came to the rescue and towed me to safety. On initial looking and haynes reference, I think the oil pump pipes have come loose as they can be seen and the car dumped all it's oil. Hopefully this will be the only problem with it but time will tell. MOT due this month so will be getting the garage to do thourough checks to give it a clean bill of health (at least I have emptied the oil out for them!) will keep things updated. Car looks good though lol

stamford
08-11-10, 10:53 AM
Never heard the oil pipes coming adrift before, hope it's not done any damage.

Considering how long you have had this car I'm impressed with what you've done thus far.

Smokey
08-11-10, 11:08 AM
Well, I want to make it a good track car so will do what it takes!

Hopefully the better weather in a few months time will mean more track days and a trip or two down south.

Okay, so had a look under the car today and it was obvious what the offending area was...covered in oil and, as pictured, a pipe seperated!

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/PICT0642.jpg

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff96/smokeysworld/PICT0643.jpg

I will jack up the car and reconnect the pipe, refill the oil (how many litres for v6 again?) and pray the car has not got a seized engine.

Am hoping that the engine cut off on the motorway was to prevent such a seizure so fingers crossed!

Smokey
10-11-10, 10:19 AM
Oh, and a quick pic update as I have now put on the site stickers (Thanks Pete)

Blair what's the current status of the engine?

Smokey
16-11-10, 01:18 AM
Unknown as yet, Kev hasn't managed to come through yet to give a diagnosis.

Thanks to all who support and advise and hopefully will get the car running again.

Was thinking of stripping and getting rid if engine is gubbed but have now decided that regardless I will keep it and through the winter months save up to get it going again. If donations are made this will quicken the process and I would arrange those people to get first dibs on track days at various tracks around the UK.

We shall see what the outcome of the current engine is first!

(if it's dead I forsee a Top Gear style coffee table)

I only asked as the site owners have agreed to help out with a donation towards a replacement engine if it is required. We'll post details when appropriate, it'll be a decent enough sum to get you on your way.
