View Full Version : Cambelt removing - foot on brake method
Hey all. In the middle of doing the timing belt etc. Had a real pain getting crank bolt off and the thing where put it in 5th and get somebody to stand on the brake pedal is guff!!! does not work. Took starter motor out and got mate to jam big tool in there and bob's your uncle. Have striped down as far as am going tonight. tmrw involves dumping the coolent, removing the belt and fire on new water pump. let you know how it goes :)

a stuck mines in first then had ma foot on the break pedal,yer mate did have his foot off the clutch eh

Assuming 120, your right the Brake pedal method no longer works.... :)
And the method you did above is actually the MGR way of doing it (if you use the correct tool!)
FFS! This is torture doing this in this weather! have taken pic's along the way to show you fellow zed's the torture it is lol. Today i got the coolent dumped, water pump replaced and new coolent in. Had to spend alot of time getting the belt on right and the tensioner in place - very fecking fiddly! Panicking like hell on earth to make sure everything lines up!. Did have a moment ( and may still have that moment) when trying to try the flywheel lock with the brake - crank pulley slightly out align with the it's marks?. cams are locked with the tool so they ok. So when belt was off I just slightly moved the crank again to re-align. Am talking like a tooth - tooth n half out but thats a tooth out!!.
So tomrw will hopefully see the wife helping to lock the flywheel to torque the pulley bolt and then to put starter ( which i took the liberty of cleaning all the points etc while it out ) back on. Put back on the PAS tensioner and belt and the alternator belt. Reconnect the battery and before starting - one last check on the timing marks by rotating the pulley bolt!!. Then.............................................. .............................. Oh Feck!! hope it's ok :)
Never Never NEVER do this in the snow and freezing weather and never never NEVER do this without the flywheel locking tool. Wish i had just got it for the sake of ?20 - the time and hassel that wee thing would have saved!. So until tmrw.

Know how you feel m8 my son and me di the headgasket on his ZR last December in snow an ice not a nice thing
Timing Belt and water pump done :) :) :) found a fantastic bracket in the garage that locked the flywheel superbly and after that I was on a role. Topped up the coolent and put back the starter and the battery and - Walla! started first time! woohoo. Brought up to temperature and checked coolent level and checked for leaks round new water pump. All ok. Kept an eye on the belt and tensioner which the tensioner moved slightly but after a while running - gave it plenty of rev's and seems to be fine. Not had her out on the road yet as she is currently burried in the driveway under a tone of flemmin snow! Pic's to follow. Phew what a couple of day's!

I tried (and failed) to fit an alternator to the 'Rents ZT CDTi on crimbo day and swore i'd never work on a car again in the snow!!

Did you time it up, then rotate the crank twice (with engine off) then readjust the tensioner? then rotate twice and see if the tensioner has moved again? Then recheck the timing?
If not, I bet your timing is now 1 tooth out :D:D :tease:
