A bit of a game getting the cambelts changed.

I had the car booked before Christmas to have the belts done & the water pump changed, but the garage couldn't do it in time as they were overwhelmed with work, so the car came home with nothing done. :(

So I started phoning around for prices again & I was quite suprised with some of the answers I got!

One garage flatly refused to touch it!

Three garages said they'd call me back with quote & never did.

Another said they didn't have the locking tools anymore & couldn't take the car on & they were a Rover & MG specialist! But in their defence, they did put me on to the place that's now doing the work.

So in the end YF02 has gone to an engine specialist. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Is it common for mechanics to run for the hills when ever Rover V6's are mentioned or is it just bad luck on my side? :rofl:

same everywhere dude, the only place that used to welcome them (but charge through the back teeth!) has now closed :( hence... i will probably give it a try myself to be honest! the locking kits are only about ?100 2nd hand on the bay!

I would not recommend trying to do the v6 cam belts your self cause by book time it take 8 hours for an experienced mechanic and you really strip it down to the bare bones so if you know what your doing by all means but after being in a rover garage I was stumped after 3 hours what to do and you are very restricted for space as well so it is also very annoying

Sometimes the cheapest price is not the best :) but if its a cheap price and a good reputation then I'd say your on to a winner :)

Did my belts at the Local MGRover specialist (ex main dealer, now TF main dealer) for ?350 - cheaper than they are quoting the thermostat change for, work that out!

Had a hunt round the forums and there well rated.. i think im paying a ton over what you paid dude but thats still better than the quotes i was getting

I paid ?350 for all belts and water pump, alas mine was as right biatch and the guy is not fussed about doing another as he has enough k-series work!

I got a Haynnes manual for crimbo & that's the first bit I went too, after reading that I definitely wouldn't let any old Tom, **** or Harry have a bash at it!

Summit Garage over Dudley who used to be a Rover dealer I think, are still charging dealership prices, they quoted me over ?800 for the job.

The guys I've taken it too aren't the cheapest but I've got more confidence in them doing a proper job than the original place that was going to do it.

I can't wait for the car to be done, I haven't driven the car in anger yet since I've bought it! :rofl:

Mu usual garage would not give me a price when I was looking to get the belts done on my old 180. They just didnt want the hassle. A few other garages were the same. As soon as I said v6 they werent interested. Eventually got the local xpart/ex mg dealer to do them for nearly 600. Did an ok job but I had to shift the engine on the mounts cos it wasnt bloody straight when It came back!

When I bought the car before christmas I could hear a squeaky pulley when starting from cold, bothered me a little so I refrained from using the car until the cam belts were done.

My caution seems to be fully justified now! :D

Plastic cracked all the way through, the guys said this had affected the timing... eek!

lol dont dude I have my belts being done after only 37k because the current ones are slack!!! also getting a squeek from there to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
