Always best to change them.. I tend to do the sump bolt as well but thats not as necessary unless its mega old

i never change it, infact i done oil changes on both the car and van today, so the car one has been undone 4times now and not changed it

Only ever changed them if they leak (iirc none ever has!) or if I happen to have one by some flook - God knows how many oil changes I've done on my cars + family & friends over about 30 odd years.

I'm lazy and use a sucker outer, down the dipstick tube.

Do it every 6 months or so, but last time took it to Nationwide for filter and oil, charged extra ?10 to take the undertray off!!!

I know Ritchy will say you leave all the swarf and crud in the bottom of the sump, but its such a bind dropping it out the plug hole. Either goes up your arm or over the drive.

Maybe I could suck it out then undo the plug and wont have the same amount to rush out.

Popular in the US, especially at drive through service centres.

For what they cost, a few pence, change it!

Soooo easy, couple of pumps, the old oil gets sucked out and can easily be poured into a container.

No mess. No climbing underneath. But you do leave a bit in the bottom of the sump, thats why I do it every 6 months or so.

Wonder how many garages use this method. ;););)
