Hopefully going to look (and buy) an MG ZS tomorrow but 99% of people im talking to are telling me its a bad idea.

I work at a car breakers and we do get a lot of dead MG and Rovers in so i can see where they are coming from, but the car im looking at has had the belts changed, clutch uprated, thermosat done and apparently very well looked after. 70k on the clock

My current car is running fine, no problems so dont wanna get rid and buy a car thats going to die on me.

I really want it - but people getting me worried

Any help/info appreciated

I bet that 99% have never actually owned a MG or Rover.

They're good cars, if the belts have been done that's a major expense taken care of, listen for rattly plenum, a bit of searching on the site will give you some background on the plenum issues.

How much are you paying, if it's not a rude question.

Had mine 9 years in Aug and only major thing has been head gasket a couple of months ago, though mines a 4 pot K series.
Theres been niggles but nothing that hasn't easily been fixed (depends if you're mech minded I suppose), door handles, heater fan resistor, SRS light, front seat mounts and a couple of brake calipers is really about it TBH
Plus wear 'n' tear things of course, original front discs wore out pretty quick and its had tyres, exhaust, battery etc but you'd have them with any car.

Assuming you have some mechanical knowledge and have looked at the car ( as you would any other car ) to make sure it isnt a neglected bag of bolts , you,l be pleasantly surprised just how good the 180 is.....listen for a rattle from top of engine like a sorta tappet rattle .... that would be a duff inlet manifold and a second hand one can usually be found... vis motors on the inlet manifold play up ..... but again are easily fixed .... see "how to repair your vis motors on here

Mine gets used as intended and on a fast long journey returns a regular 32 MPG.... Truely a very underated car in my opinion

Hehe welcome aboard, mate.

Another reason you see a lot of dead MG Rovers in the breakers now is that the newest of them are 6 years old, and they are/were quite popular cars. Couple that with the 4 pot blowing its head every now and again and not being particularly economical to repair, I cant say Im surprised you get them.

Great cars, like everything its how they have been treated. Your one sounds like its been serviced on time and had the good mods done.

Think I would just check insurance on it.

Hope its a good one, but plenty of help on here if you need it.

Have to keep us informed of any MG's that come in for breaking, always bits required.

Just had a ZS come in (1.8 i think) in silver. Loads of Rovers and couple of ZRs

My insurance quote was ?620 FC with my girlfriend as named driver, or ?712 just myself. I thought this was pretty good for a 24 year old. Paying ?600 for my 1.8 Escort lol

Good that you came to a forum to ask people who actually own the car. Some of my mates slate my car, having never driven it, and I get sick of the "headgasket is gonna go" comments.... when I own a KV6. My car has had resistor pack failure, which stops the fan blowing at 1 and 2 (less than a fiver and 10 minutes of your time) the clutch go (fair enough), and the plenum go, that's about it. Took my mate out for a ride who had a ZR that crapped out on him, and bought a clio, said that my car won't last that long... only had to point him at my odometer reading 136,000 miles and still going strong.

Also, the car you are looking at is owned by someone on this forum mate. I may have even seen it about, I've seen about 3 trophy blue saloon mark 1s, apart from my own in the Medway area!

Aye, possibly. May be worth seeing if you can get a viewing this afternoon. If the other guy doesnt buy it there and then you can swoop in and take it.
Otherwise, there are plenty of them on the market at the minute.

Looks like a resonable car from a caring owner.

Repaired VIS and sheddist are signs of that.

Only problem I can see is that it isn't yellow.
