That first post obviously wasn't clear enough --- Sorry

What I meant was - anyone wanna give me an idea of what it's worth .... ? I've had a look around and have seen them priced from a grand up to ?3K at a dealer ! It's a Silver 2002 "02" 45 IXL hatch. Has A/C and an electric sunroof.

We're doing a wheeler dealer type thing as a bit of a hobby as he's bored having too much time on his hands as he works 12 hr shifts, and I'm just always looking at cars. I'm a more handsome and svelt Mike Brewer and he's an uglier Ed China !

Any ideas ....

A mate at work just bought an 04 25 Auto for ?850 and its in reasonable nick.
Would say the 45 is worth ?2-300 more?

Mike Brewer would say :- cost of car ?500

cylinder head skim ?100

plus parts CHG ? 75

Timing belts + tensioner ?125

water pump ?45

new oil and filter ?45

coolant ?30

Total cost ?920

Profit ?580

Selling Price ?1500.

Low miles, fsh, new belts, new CHG.

Have no idea of actual figures, but you can put the real ones in, note, no charge for Ed Chinas time, just like TV.

I've got to be careful mate .... ;)

It's potentially a good little hobby which will hopefully improve my mechanical knowledge a bit if I look over my mates shoulder while he doing the work. This will work out well if the sale goes through and we don't find anything nasty. All should be fine though.

Could always offer a 3 months/6 month warranty on the head repair work, providing you sell at a good price and your labour is covered might give punters confidence that all will be OK.

Be another buyer around the corner, all in the presentation and a well worded advert.

Best of luck with it.

It's on ebay ending this afternoon.

Currently ?555.55 but the reserve is set at ?1300. I set it at that as I found a recent seller which is of lower spec and higher mileage which sold at that .... Just in case anyone wanted to have a bit of fun in an auction.

So - it's set at ?1300 - that means that - you could bid up to that and you won't have to buy it ..... ;)

Not a huge amount in the end - and a bit of learning over the car to buy so could have done better.

Costs for advertising - ?120 ish - road tax at ?140 and MOT - were quite big hits.

As it is - we made ?450 on the car so ?225 each. Better than a punch in the face !

Hmmmm.....Mrs C ain't too happy about another project to be honest. Too much time spent sourcing parts, advertising, the extra car parked outside for a couple of months didn't go down too well with the neighbours either ! You don't get your money back either until the car sells - so up until today I was ?560 down.

Think I'll leave it a while and maybe look into renting a local authority garage nearby for the next one.

I completely missed this thread.......

How does your mate have lots of spare time if he does 12 hour shifts? I do the best part of that every day when you include traveling and I don't have any spare time :(

Also I wonder if it took you a while to sell as you wern't pushing hard enough, hence why I didn't see the thread.

Where did you advertise?

12 months MOT helps to sell but did you need to tax it?

Spare time comes from doing 4 days on then 4 days off. Days and nights alternating. He's bored on his days off if they fall in the week.

It took a while because of the holidays I reckon and the adverts have to appeal to the type of buyer for the type of car. I tried ebay first and on reflection, a buyer for a good Rover 45 Auto is going to be an older gent or lady who aren't really going to be looking at Ebay. After a while I went with the local free paper. ?55 advert for a "hold til sold" so once that was done, all I had to do was ring up every Monday to re-advertise. I didn't push it a lot on here as I didn't really think anyone here would be interested to be honest.

Getting the tax helped, but I only got it so that I could park it on the road. The other thing about the tax was if it hadn't had any, a buyer could've asked how much it would be. When I tell them ?140 for 6 months, it may have put them off. As it is, the cost of the tax didn't even get a mention when it eventually was sold. 12 months MOT certainly helped because it shows an older buyer that it's been safety checked and that provides them with some reassurance.

Lessons would be to try and get a car in the first place with a couple of months of tax on it and advertise using a medium which a potential buyer may use.
