After a trip up to Zed 10 last week and a trip out to Athelhampton House, today, thought I would check my mpg.

Left a bit later than planned, so to get to Clacket Lane Services went to the max allowed.

It comes back as 45.00 mpg. but considering it was a fairly fast run up and down, quite pleased.

Have to wait for Dan to check his now and see what the SDi's do.

Steady figure Pete .... I'll post mine up probably during next week. I'm on 300 at the moment and just over half the guage left but as we all know, it drops quicker on the second half !

LPG seems the way to go, thats until the gov. decides there are too many people going for it. Tax suddenly will bite your ***.

Remember a few years ago derv was a lot cheaper than petrol to get people to run dervs, now they do, derv is dearer than petrol. Takes less to refine it, so why???

I thought I would be 50 + mpg, but I do tend to push the revs up a bit.

Cant wait for your results Dan, might make me fit the SDi's!!!!

I'm cr*p at parking!!!! The wheels were all curbed when I bought it and I just add to the damage.

So bad, I painted over all the bashed up rims, but it still looks like a mad axe man has been up them. :axe::axe:

Dont know how some people can keep them like new, know if I had them painted/refurbed they would soon be bashed up!!

Even outside our house, trying to be carefull, cruuuuuuuuuuunch, I know you can look in the mirrors etc. but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went in early just for you Pete ..... And bear in mind that I've been messing about a wee bit .......

Covered 361 miles and put 35L in.

Therefore 35 x .22 = 7.7

361 divided by 7.7 = 46.8 mpg

Cheers Dan, sounds like we arnt far off.

I know the run up to Zed 10 was a bit quick, think I will have a try of the injectors and see what it feels like.

Least Reidies not too far from me, if I think it needs a tweak or two on the mapping side.

Then a quick RR to try and beat 151.2!!!!!

When you go for a test drive in one and it doesnt want to pull, most likely be the MAF sensor gone. Easy to change ?75 odd if you get one like Dan.

I was just having a chat with a guy who had bought a ZS Derv, was disappointed in it until he changed the MAF, now it goes as it should.

heheh maybe - only need 30% throttle to get on the wrong side of the boys in blue.... but it is actually dropping my mway cruising rpm by around 200-250 that is making the 5mpg difference to what i usually get... can't wait to see how much i can get this to drop when i can use my full lead boot again :)

tho annoying an audi driver coming home last night as i pulled onto the M4 probably wont have helped this tankful :)

It is the one massive thing i love about the L-series, unless you drive like it was stolen even in a high level of tune we still get good mpg....

Just been doing a comparison of sorts.

Anyway -

10,000 at 47mpg for a diesel at ?1.41 = Fuel cost of ?1363.47 ish.

(Approx 212.7 gallons which is 967 litres = 1363.47)

10,000 at 27mpg in a 180 at ?1.36 a litre = Fuel cost of ?2290.24 ish

(Approx 370.5 gallons which is 1684 litres = 2290.24)

Insurance - for me anyway -
Diesel = ?350
180 = ?450

Tax -
Diesel = ?130
180 = ?245

So a years driving a Diesel is roughly - ?926.77 cheaper on fuel and ?215 cheaper on tax and insurance

Total - ?1141.77 .........

Clearly as things go up - the diesel becomes even cheaper - but as mileage goes down so will the savings.

:hmmm:

yeah - thankfully i do mostly business miles now so i tend to get myself an even better deal out of not doing so many miles....

thinking of getting the GF a new car off a mate (an 09 plate) that is petrol but still does 40mpg... it is however 2 insurance groups higher than a standard derv ZS!

Not sounding rude, but doesnt the ZS tank hold 12g? So to get 50mpg you would need to do around 600 to a tank?
Best I ever got from the 120 was 550 miles driving at no more than 60 though! Still, 45 mpg from a 1.8 saloon isn't bad!

Park about 2 foot from the kerb ! Thats what i do , my wife always says "can you call me a taxi to get to the kerb" yeah very funny but my alloys are spotless ! (unlike the ones on her car ! )

p_b82
18-08-11, 12:30 PM
the problem with that where i used to live, is that if i left it that far from the Kerb the bin lorry or even a trasnit would take out the mirrors or worse....

was a tough choice of ' wreck the mirros etc or risk a curb scuff....

parallel parking was no fun either as you could not swing the front end out properly either as just not enough space....

Now however i have moved and the ZS lives on the Drive :D

I always get caught out backing up, I put it down to our road being bent and the curve catches me out. Thats even though it looks straight.

Wheels really knackered, but Ive just painted over the worse parts with the starlight sparkle paint.

I know what you mean , the sister in law lives right on a bend in the road and the curve has almost caught me out a couple of times ! Anyway back on topic , best i have done is 144 miles from ?20 at 135.9 a litre (120+) Any good? Nowhere near what a TD could get i suppose

Think we need Dan, or some other clever one, to work out mpg, too early for me, or too complicated, dont know which.

:whistle::whistle::whistle:

p_b82
19-08-11, 10:46 AM
?20 = 2000p

so that is 2000/135.9 = 14.7 L

144/14.7 =9.8mpl
9.8*4.54 = 44mpg

the problem with that is that it is not very accurate, as the tank and guages are never even etc... you need to do it with a 'brim to brim' test to really know....

if it is accurate though it is exceptional mpg :)

Bless ....

All I do is measure how many litres I put in and how many miles I got up until that point. Reset your trip next time you fill up, and then when you do, take note of the litres you put in - not the cost.

So - 45 litres in for example. 45 x .22 = 9.9

Miles covered = 350 therefore miles per gallon is 350 divided by 9.9 = 35.3mpg

Say, is there an option for a gauge test mode on a zs? I've seen zt has one...

peterzs
20-08-11, 09:47 AM
You should try the BMW i-drive system lol

I was reading a Car mag, when I was waiting for grand son in the orthodontic's yesterday, had i-3, and a i-8 they were looking at.

i-3 168 bhp electric motor!! very quick 0-60mph

http://www.bmw-i.co.uk/en_gb/bmw-i3/?WT.mc_id=s_ggl_uk_phase2

i-8 electric motor plus 220 bhp engine

http://www.bmw-i.co.uk/en_gb/bmw-i8/?WT.mc_id=s_ggl_uk_phase2

Never heard about this new BMW idea, but reading the mag one thing that would worry me is that the i-8 has a pedestrian protection system, where it will come to a stop, by itself if it senses someone is in the way.

First thought would be its ideal for a car thief, 1st one jumps out in front of it and it will stop and the 2nd one could be at the drivers door. Also I hope there would be an override option. After the riots of last week, would be the last place where you would want the pedestrian friendly mod to kick in, as you were trying to get out of their way!!!

They have self parking, and drive themselves below 25 mph, science fiction come to life. Joe 90 here I come!!!

:smile2::smile2::smile2::smile2:

zsserbia
07-09-11, 11:07 PM
Yeah, I've seen the i-3 and i-8 in a car mag recently as well, quite impressive, no wonder bmw's forward thinking is a subject of criticism quite often, seems you really need a 14 year old to set up your i-drive system, like Clarkson once said...

As for self parking, self driving and similar gadgets, call me old-fashioned but it really isn't my cup of tea. Some things really need to be kept fairly simple, imho... Alternative fuel I fully support though.
