OK, I created a thread a looong time ago with rough outline to my plans for a custom centre console. Thread was here:

http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/showthread.php?t=11562

Well today I completed my order of items bar one or two cables. I have done this on a ?500 budget and still have around ?100 left. (I already had the laptop)

I have chosen to go with a laptop under the footwell for a couple of reasons; space/ventilation and when ignition goes off the PC will still run on laptop battery so no rebooting every petrol stop!

The plan is thus:

I am completely customising the centre console from the bottom up.

Installed will be a touchscreen monitor with DVD drive beneath it, usb slots, power button and push start button.

The above will be connected to a laptop with sat nav, ipod connectivity and all the usual PC gubbins (internet etc)

I will be installing an amp as there will be no head unit.

The four buttons along the top (fogs etc) will be removed and replaced with red led ring switches.

OBD2 data will be accessible.

The aircon will be relocated on the centre console and will be changed to red led's to match the rest of the dash.

I plan on extending the dash over the ashtray recess as I have no use for it and it means I can position USB ports there.

I will be running Centrafuse front end for the PC and I am running a second 4" monitor in the dash recess where the light sensor for climate control is. This will be hinged to allow it to be stowed away.

This monitor will be a secondary desktop, so using my iphone as a mouse, I will be able to have it display sat nav/obd2 data or......

I am also installing 2 night vision colour cameras, front and rear. The rear one will activate when I go in reverse and will display on the 4" monitor.
The front camera will be available to both monitors and will have a record function too. Obviously not gonna be high quality but will be fun. Also has night vision so may come in useful.

Lastly, I already have rear parking sensors but someone installed front ones but they have never worked and are becoming loose. So I have ordered new ones and they have a monitor that tells you the distance of the car in front. This will replace the clock.

Anyway, you're all probably asleep by now so here's some piccies!

Still go plenty to do but next is DVD-RW drive with pc power switch and push start buttons either side, then climate control, then 2x USB ports and temp sensor for aircon. This should leave the cubby hole space at the bottom which I like having for the sunglasses :)

I have tested most of the electronics and am satisfied so far.

Will keep everything updated as I go.

Lol, my mirrors dont record all the action :snap:

Have now ordered a new TF wheel with silver knobs to try using as volume/track up and down :)

Went to get the tracking redone so its will be all spot on.

Well due to my gearbox failure and my car being at GeAServices in Falkirk, I have not been able to get any further with the build as I need to know it will all fit before securing everything properly. So hopefully in a few days I'll be back on it!

However, in the meantime, I bought a leather TF wheel with steptronic buttons and have now wired them up to complete track forward/back and volume up/down functions. Well chuffed.

chris106
10-11-11, 11:15 PM
thats awsome, how did you do the wiring to make it do that???

Smokey
10-11-11, 11:31 PM
My special secret, released for a fee lol.

Wasn't too difficult actually, I had initially planned to wire the switches to the media keys on a keyboard but space would have been an issue and the keyboards are no longer green boards so not so easy!

So.... I have stripped a USB, 4-button mouse.
Wired the forward and back motions on the wheel to mouse switches 1 to 4.
Using Hydramouse or similar, reprogram the mouse clicks to be volume up/down and track up/down.

This means when I press back on the left one it is a left mouse button click, which in turn puts volume up. Press forward and it is a right mouse button click, which puts volume down.

The same is done on the right wheel switch and the other 2 mouse buttons.

Is this something you plan on doing yourself? If so I can knock up a diagram.

14-11-11, 12:23 PM
i would love to do it but it does not sound easy at all! lol would i be able to do it with a normal headunit :S
also how good are you with car electrics?? i have a few things i want to do :D

Smokey
14-11-11, 05:13 PM
I do have a plan of creating a more basic system whereby I would make a custom console with 7" touchscreen and standard din slot for headunit. Would be a plug n play with a laptop/pc build for sale but I'll be finishing this one first lol

Smokey
19-11-11, 07:58 PM
Well as I haven't had much access to my car the carpc has been paused til I can get some measurements done.

In the meantime, I have completely wired up the TF wheel switches with good solder points and plenty of wire for when I install it in the car.

I have taken a wee video to prove I've done it for a start but also to show its functions.

LEFT + = Track Up
LEFT - = Track Down

RIGHT + = Volume Up
RIGHT - = Volume Down

Double Click RIGHT + = Mute

I have wiring completed to allow more functions as I haven't assigned Double Click LEFT +, LEFT -, RIGHT -, MIDDLE and Double Click MIDDLE.

It was quite difficult doing double clicks while balancing the wheel on my knees but you get the idea!

Cheers Grimmy. Did some work on the centre console again today. Have almost completed the final part at the bottom to include the temp sensor, 2 switches (pc power and engine start) and 2 USB ports. Once glue has hardened, I will afix it to the console and then it will be time for filler/sand/filler/sand/filler.... until finally a paint to see where the blemishes are.

Smokey
24-11-11, 09:42 PM
Today I put on the first layer of filler and once it hardened, I gave it a little sand to smooth it off slightly. Tomorrow I'll be sanding it thoroughly to see where I missed if anywhere....

Cheers Chris.

Did a bit more sanding today and gave it a light coat of paint to 1) get a feel for what it will look like in the end and 2) to see where and how uneven the sanding was.

It showed me there is a loooot of sanding still to be done but its heading in the right direction.

Sorry for the pic quality, flash wouldn't switch off, but you get the idea on progress.

did i see a sealey power products power inverter in all that.if it is i would not use that at all as they have a tendancy to go faulty plus also they do not give out the right sine wave for running computers.

Smokey
26-11-11, 11:17 PM
Cheers for the concern mate. It doesn't appear to be a Sealy model but regardless it is not being used to run a computer, it is purely to power the USB Hub which I have tested. If it fails, it will not be a major issue.

I'm still concerned about the use of a laptop, they are not designed to run while on the move.

Have you replaced the hard drive with a solid state version, that would go some way to helping.

Smokey
27-11-11, 01:17 PM
I ran a standard pc base in the boot a few years back with normal hdd. Bearing in mind they are not designed to move at all whereas laptops are, and it never had an issues. I will be using foam to absorb some motion as well but I don't forsee any issues. Time will tell

That's not a bad idea, you know, or even run the whole thing from a 16/32GB pen drive. Hard drives really dont like being wobbled.

Don't look directly at it or you might vomit!!

Mate would it not be better to get it close to where you want it and working then have it finished professionally I know every time I looked at it it would drive me nuts if not flawless.

Smokey
04-02-12, 10:38 PM
I dunno. The flaws are probably so obvious because all I am looking at is the console without switches/screen/atc etc. I have so many ideas that I want to try too. I like the idea of silver with red splashes of paint, but worry it'll look blood splattered, also though of black splatters as the car is black. Oh I dunno lol!

It's not the painting that's the issue guys, it's the smoothing of body filler mainly around the clock area. It looks terrible imo but can't find a good solution other than hacking it and starting again!

Smokey
05-02-12, 01:54 PM
Here are the main areas I have an issue with. Sorry about pic quality and poor lighting! It's only got a light covering of paint, enough to see the blemishes.

ZS Phil
05-02-12, 03:14 PM
Its exaggerated by the fact that the lines are not parallel or straight which amplifies the smaller blemishes around the edges. If it was me Id try and straigthen it all up then fill the blemishes with either resin or a filler. Then get it as smooth as poss by using progressively finer grades of rubbing paper and then use a high build primer, sand, high build primer, finer grade sand and so on untill its smooth.

Not saying thats the right way because I know sod all about this sort of thing, just seems the logical way forward.

Quadcam24
05-02-12, 03:21 PM
wrap it in carbon film maybe ?

peterzs
05-02-12, 04:04 PM
what filler you using Smokey?? Only ask, as I was sorting out the grand sons scooter where he had come off. Got some P45 isopon filler that I had in the shed, but also had another make of professional filler that said it was smoother.

I always put the filler on with an old credit card and you can get quite good results, dont let the filler get sticky, use it quickly and smooth it out.

I'm sure as ZS Phil says, just time and effort and it will come back as good as new.

Think if you wrap it, it seems to exaggerate any imperfections so could still see it.

Think we are all the same, want to do it and get it sorted as soon as poss, but bit of elbow grease again and it will be so much better.

Smokey
05-02-12, 04:07 PM
Ross, I take no offence. I wouldn't dare put it in the car as is, I was just highlighting the issue I'm having. I have a couple of ideas it's just frustrating to be so close yet so far from what I want!
It's also such a small area to get filler in without getting it on the face of the screen. I will persevere, just wish it was easier lol!

Ok so dremel arrived today so started to attack this again!

I ripped apart my work in the click area and have tried a new approach. Not yet filled it etc but all edges will now be straight so should look good.

Also took apart one of the USB slots to rework it to get it a bit more like the other one.

I have also sanded a little more hence the green bits lol.

I put the switches in and fitted it to the surround so as to get an idea of the finished article. It's coming together...

Also, the metallic paint really enhances the flaws, the matt one defo hides blemishes better.

The USB will never be perfect but I have 2 tiny dongles to help that!

yeah certain colours really will, likely wont show up when fitted anyway, although i recon if you can use vinyl it could hide any flaws just looking at some of dazzers work before, looks good

Only thing with vinyl is, I would have to cut it perfect around the USB and clock anyway as there is nowhere to 'tuck' it in.

I will keep smoothing and see how things go, especially with the other paint, but time will tell.

It's heading in the right direction though!

Ok, decided to tackle the switches AGAIN!!

For anyone who needs to know and for guidance on here:

Front fogs have 5 wires:-

YELLOW - NC
RED/BLACK(1) - C
RED/GREEN - +ve for tell-tale light
RED/BLACK(2) - +ve for switch light
BLACK - -ve for both lights

(dead simple huh!)

Now the rear foglights have 4 wires:

RED/YELLOW
RED/BLUE
RED/BLACK
BLACK

but I'll be buggered if I can figure out what is what! All I have discovered is if I hook up:-

RED/YELLOW - NO
RED/BLUE - C

then when I press the switch, fogs come on....when I press it again, nothing!!

I used the multimeter and using BLACK and RED/BLACK as the end terminal, I got the following voltages, if this helps anyone decifer it all!!

IGNITION ON

BLACK/RED - RED/BLUE = 12.9V
BLACK/RED - RED/YELLOW = 0V
BLACK/RED - BLACK = 0V

IGNITION ON and LIGHTS ON

BLACK/RED - RED/BLUE = -0.8V
BLACK/RED - RED/YELLOW = -13.7V
BLACK/RED - BLACK = -13.7V

IGNITION ON, LIGHTS ON and FOGS ON

BLACK/RED - RED/BLUE = -0.9V
BLACK/RED - RED/YELLOW = 0.11V
BLACK/RED - BLACK = -13.7V

IGNITION ON

BLACK - RED/BLUE = 12.0V
BLACK - RED/YELLOW = 0V
BLACK - RED/BLACK = 0V

IGNITION ON and LIGHTS ON

BLACK - RED/BLUE = 12.8V
BLACK - RED/YELLOW = 0V
BLACK - RED/BLACK = 14V

IGNITION ON, LIGHTS ON and FOGS ON

BLACK - RED/BLUE = 12.8V
BLACK - RED/YELLOW = 14V
BLACK - RED/BLACK = 14V

All help would be appreciated!!

As I read the wiring diagram for the rear fogs, the Black goes to C, the Red/Yellow and Red/Blue to the NO +ve and negative, and the Red/Black to the +ve on your new switch.

talkingcars
26-03-12, 06:36 PM
Have you got the full diagram?

Red/black - black will be for the switch illumination.

Red/yellow & red/blue both go to the BCU - another lead from the BCU goes to a relay.

Smokey
26-03-12, 07:15 PM
Guess what, in the time it took to check the site again, I got it!!!

And furthermore, I sorted the heater one too so now ALL 4 switches fully function!

My only issue was my switches all have 1 ring LED each....

The problem being, 3 out of 4 of the original switches have an illumination light AND a tell tale light.

I was going to have them all illuminated when the lights are on as this would look better than some lights on, some lights off but as it turns out, tell-tale lights on fog switches are an MOT requirement!!

So, I plan on creating 2 circuits, switchable when needed, that give me both set ups:

1. All switches illuminated with the lights turned on

2. Door lock illuminated, other three lit when operation selected (ie. foglights/heater)

Blair from the Diagram you posted up thats NOT 04MY Cars, thats for Mk1's.

Info below for Mk2's

Rear Fogs

Pin1 - Red/Blue - Signal to BCU(Telltale)
Pin2 - Red/Black - Live via Lighting switch (common live between front and rear switches)
Pin3 - Not Connected
Pin4 - Black - Ground
Pin5 - Red/Yellow - Output to Rear Fogs
Pin6 - Not Connected

Front Fogs

Pin1 - Red/Black - Live via Lighting switch (common live between front and rear switches)
Pin2 - Red/Green - Output to Front Fogs
Pin3 - Black - Ground
Pin4 - Yellow - Signal to BCU(Telltale)
Pin5 - Not Connected
Pin6 - Same as Pin1

A wee bit of progress again today. Sadly my wiring is wrong as no switches work, just light up. I think I know what the issue is so will tackle it tomorrow.

PC side of things is progressing well, the basics work!

One problem I've discovered in trying to wire an amp...

I have iPhone plugged in to audio jack with phono end plugged in to amp. The front right speaker is screwed to the relevant point on the amp and this is connected to the wiring from the head unit. Not a peep?! Ideas?

Does the phono plug at the other end have 2 or 3 contacts?
Have you swapped any of the wires on the amp to see if it just one channel?

Looks stunning. Kudos to your time and effort.

I'm considering something like this but using an Android (or Windows) tablet rather than a laptop. Or perhaps a smartphone...
External flash storage for music, amp and relevant wiring for the speakers, bluetoth OBD2 diagnostics, 12v direct feed with an ac transformer, still use battery of course to prevent rebooting at petrol stations (however using Android, that wouldn't be such an issue), plenty of software/apps for speed and geometry tracking. And of course web browsing and satnav available right away. No issues with airflow/over heating or hard drive movement.

Drawbacks would be no CD/DVD drive, limited functionality compared to a Windows OS, limited storage capacity,

Smokey
29-01-13, 06:28 PM
Well, as I updated my dials thread, might as well put the pics here as they show a new carPC feature.

My carPC has been through a few changes software wise and I am currently experimenting with Linux so am just fine tuning the hole front end.

The console itself is going to be ripped out again and remodelled to get rid of the blemishes I see. I am also removing the DVD-RW drive as it is never used and is wasting 2 USB ports! The console is also getting sprayed matt black to match the new black/chrome dials (courtesy of Stephen, they are from a Rover 45)

I recently purchased an android phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) and came up with an idea.... my monitor is wired to the PC via VGA connection, but it also has HDMI capability... so ordered the relevant cables and downloaded a great app for the phone et viola! I can now view my phone via the monitor and listen via the car speakers. All features work, ie sat nav, music, videos, internet etc, the only thing I cant do is utilise the touch screen on the monitor.

It's a great additional feature, especially for short journeys as the phone is already on and booted so it connects instantly with bluetooth audio and I'm ready to rock. I can also switch to PC in a jiffy if other features are needed (like cameras, touchscreen etc)

So here are the photos:

So far it runs Sat Nav, OBD2 data, Music, Videos, connects to my phone for internet giving tunein radio (all UK stations), iheart radio (all US stations) and was even running Hunger Games through Netflix on the move for the young lad.

I could do phone calls but I hook mine directly to the bluetooth stereo for that.

Am in the process of getting it to read out texts I receive on my phone via Tablet Talk and then sending an auto reply saying I'm driving!

And thanks for the feedback. haven't tested it near a mk1 as yet.

No Forza but Real Racing 3 runs fine. And I can connect a wired xbox controller to play other games like GTA and some racing games

The firmware is currently stock as it's all I need but am using AWD Launcher and a few other tricks to give it the custom, car front end.

Played about with Tasker app so now, when I turn on the ignition, the screen turns on, WIFI and Bluetooth turn on, it auto connects to the headunit, OBD adapter and my phone through wifi tether.

When the ignition is off, it switches off bluetooth and WIFI, stops the music if playing and turns the screen off.

Pretty pleased so far and will get a video up of its functions soon, if anyone is interested?

Great stuff pal.

Do you think doing it again - you could do it faster ? What changes would you make ?

Smokey
12-02-14, 07:52 AM
I would defo be able to do it quicker next time. Changes? I would sand some of the clip on case down to make it easier to remove (although I personally have no plan to) and I would reinforce everything a bit more so I didn't have to worry about it so much while rebuilding it.

I would also do a variant that includes the stereo by sacrificing the ashtray (similar to my PC build one).

If I am honest, I can't actually believe how happy I am with the outcome of it, especially aesthetically! Plus, compared to the carPC booting up every time, it's instant on with the ignition so I am listening to tunes before I'm off the drive so definitely much safer!

The hardest/most time consuming task was getting the front end to look as it does. It is completely custom, nobody has the same front end as me in any car and I'm quite proud of that.

I look forward to it because it is either this or a double din Pioneer head unit retrofit. :D

Thanks Grimmy, you'll see it in the flesh soon enough. Might even make you want one lol!

Ideally, I would love be able to get it on a 3D CAD system to have it produced in small numbers but I wouldn't know where to start with CAD!

As promised, here's a we peek at the functionality of the tablet install

http://youtu.be/keh3Wf4Yzhk

It is wired in to the lighter socket which is relocated behind the console. My head unit is in the glove box but I could have installed it instead of the ashtray or below the ashtray.

Very very good mate, I'll copy your modified :p which is the desktop widget? thanks

You'll copy what mate? Not sure what you're asking?

If I put my nexus 7 zs console, what I know is the app or widget to select app launcher

Main menu selection widget launcher app?

I'm using adw launcher and uccw for the custom widgets. Think I used a text creator too but can't remember.

looks very nice mate !
would love to have something like this in my R45 MK2
i have the nice black oak console with the ATC
if im correct there is a small difference with the RDH and LHD consoles right ?
would be nice if i could find a cheap spare LHD console to try and make one myself with the headunit instead of the ashtray (never use it)
What material are you using for the joining parts together ?

Smokey

Looking at the consoles, they don't seem to be any different? What do you think are the differences in LHD and RHD?

Dr Doggystyle

someone here in NL told me that once.
The RHD console turns a little to right (to the driver)
the LHD console turns a little the left (to the driver)
and they have different partnumbers too
but i will try myself if i can find a RHD console with the ATC

This arose just recently and I originally thought that just the strip across the dash would be different but pete advised that there is differences, so not interchangeable. I think it was on the Spanish ZS rebuild thread, shall have a look!

Completely different thread but found it, everything is sided as said on this page:)

thx for the info Maxfly
too bad for me because there arent a lot of LHD MK2 cars on the scrapyard here in NL

I'm still not 100% convinced. I would have thought to save money, MG/Rover would have kept the facia the same but changed the black plastic surround to face the driver?

I was the same, I am guessing pete looked at Rimmer bros parts diagrams, that I guess would show what the differences are and if it is possible to mod to fit lhd to rhd and vice versa.

It's the shape of them that is different, you could maybe fit a rhd console in a lhd car.

The outer console has the same part number, the insert has differing numbers for left and right.

That's disappointing.

Anyway, on my days off I plan to remove the mk1 console and see if this project is possible with the dials instead of ATC. If not, I will be aquiring another console ans once complete will be available for sale.

I was thinking £300 which would include modded console read to install. This includes the tablet all set up with car front end (similar to my demo but custom to persons taste) So will just need installed and power provided (will not include ATC/switches/clock obviously.
Alternatively, without tablet for £180.

If this is possible, is it a price people will be willing to pay?

I'd have one mate absolutely at that price - I'm chuffed with my interior at the moment so not for me, but I'd have one.

If that can be done with a MK1 bezel but for a double din stereo I would definitely pay that!

Malteser, that's a completely different build! That would be modification to the rear of the console, not just the section I modified

Yes I know but I'm just talking about the front bezel part. The rear end work would obviously be done by me and wouldn't take much to do honestly. As long as I know that the cables can be moved down for the heater dials, then I can mount everything properly. :D

Mk1 and mk2 bezels are interchangeable in the outer console.

Added Tablet Talk today so messages that are sent to my phone appear on the tablet and can be replied to by the same means :)

Also bought another Nexus 7 case to start work on the mk2 of this console to include stereo section. Anyone want to donate a mk2 ATC console? :P
