It's down the back of the engine at the gearbox end.

I'll see if I can dig out a pic

This what it looks like

Not the easiest thing to spot, may get away with taking it out and giving it a clean.

No, it doesn't involve coolant, it's down the back of the engine as shown in the second diagram in Jays link (item 2).

Got me confused now, not all that difficult though.

If its a 180 crankshaft sensor, isnt that item 2 on the first of Jays diagrams.

Looks like its on the rh side as you look at the engine, from the front, the front V block.

I cant see why not, although may want to wait for someone else to confirm before ordering.

Goes to show what a joke the price of MG parts are!! I always check the freelander parts as not found a part I needed that was more expensive for the landy.

the crank sensor went on mine a couple of weeks ago, the garage i use got a genuine MGRover sensor from Parks Motor Group in East Kilbride.

not sure if those other 2 parts would do the job, but i'm no mechanic!

I would say you can use the sensor and harness that you linked to, but I would ring Rimmer Bros to confirm before ordering any parts.

I don't understand why the original sensor is so expensive either.

the original sensor is a total rip off considering what it is! Its basically a bit of wire with a mutliplug at each end!
i paid £188.88 for mine...
would be interesting to know if you can use the 2 other parts together though!

I just checked the xpart website with the NSC000070 part number, it doesn't even recognise it, which makes me think the cheaper sensor and link harness is the alternative.

im hoping you can use the other 2 parts if you cant then thats the end for the car its become a complete money pit

could you get 1 from a dismantler? i would've tried that but i needed the car back on the road quick so was kinda forced to buy new!

www.partsgateway.co.uk

www.1stchoice.co.uk

used both these sites in the past with no complaints...

Not just a matter of cleaning it and the connectors up and having a go to see if it works.

Dont know what they look like, or how they break down, but I know a few have got away with a quick clean and refit.

Can you see whats wrong, or test the sensor??? How do you know its gone and its not the camshaft sensor???

hope you get it fixed and it doesn't cost to much!

My understanding is that they are a form of proximity sensor that works using a pickup off the crank using electro-magnets. Or some similar electronic-witchcraft they have been known for picking up small bits of metal/graphite. Often a wipe over and they work again. Same deal with the camshaft sensor.

Edit:I obviously take too long typing!
