Hello,

I have just purchased my MK2 ZS 180.

All seems OKish

I dont know if I am just being paranoid because I have been reading loads on the forums, or if all is ok.

I have a very LOUD ticking noise coming from the car.

You can hear it with the lid down and is clear when idle or driving.

Now, I have read about VIS motors and the inlet manifold being common problems.

Car feels smooth enough but not getting much power in low gears / revs

Any other suggestions and does anyone have any PICTURES of the VIS motor or how to remove/replace so when I open the bonnet I can see what I am sposed to be looking for??

Thanks in advance

Could be purge valve, lift the bonnet and see where it is coming from, or could be a valve if low on oil.

VIZ sounds like a bag of spanners.

The purge valve is to the right of the inlet manifold, the Viz directly behind the engine.

Does the noise alter with engine speed?

A search of the forum should bring up photos.

I'm thinking maybe not the purge valve if you can hear it with the bonnet down. Does the noise keep time with the engine if you rev it?

If it is a dodgy plenum, it's relatively cheap to stick a second hand one in.

Thanks for replys

It sounds like it is coming from very low down in the engine. Almost where the aitr filter is?

Its a constant ticking.

Quieter when cold engine, louder after its been running for a while

I have made a very crude picture to try and help me to explain!

Loose coil pack maybe, or even a loose sparkplug, blowing exhaust manifold.

I will check for this thanks.

You see those 3 black plugs right where the arrows are?

What are they??

Coil packs, from memory they each have a 8mm bolt holding them on.

Defo sounds too low for plenum.

I see, this will be the first thing for me to check then.

One of them looks extremely clean compared to the other 2, so one may possibly have been changed.

Does this mean 3 coil packs or just 3 plugs going into 1/2 packs??

3 coil packs for the front bank, and 3 for the rear.

Just for your future information using your own photo, the power vis motor is the one on the top and the balance vis motor is the one on the side. Both held in by 4 screws at each corner and a plug on the top. Balance motor is very difficult to get at.

Brilliant!

Thanks for that.

Everyone seems to be really helpful so far!

I guess its because everyone has had all the same issues!!

I hear that the way to check the VIS motors are to unplug whilst running and see if there is a noticeable change?

The real way to test the motors are either using a VIS tester or fit VIS indicators.

Other than that it's all about the feel and you won't get a 100% correct answer. If the car feels sluggish below 3k rpm then chances are one of the motor is gone.

Great thanks

Im so unsure what my problem is......even if there is a real one at all?!

I cant tell if its sluggish under 3k rpm as ive never driven another 180?!

I have a quiet ticking on startup (cold)

Progressively louder (when warm)

Constant ticking but changes with the revs

Could just be a belt or slight movement!?:hmmm::hmmm:

Thats correct for your year of car.

Is the ticking happening at half engine speed ? It could be a cam follower or less likely a sticking valve ?? Some engines had a damaged O ring on the oil pick up pipe which sucks in a small amount of air that can cause noisy followers !!

That's not the coil packs, that's the ht leads, the coil packs on the front bank are just above them underneath the plastic engine cover, they're not directly on top of the spark plugs at the front....... well they weren't when I changed mine ;)

HT Leads, connected onto the front bank of 3 spark plugs :)
