thought id make this rather than a fresh thread everytime someone passes or fails lol,

il start, yesterday, for the 5th MOT in a row, pass no advisories, and all ive done to the car MOT wise in the last year is the exhaust and a set of tyres...not bad i think

peterzs

I was a bit embarrassed the way my one passed a month ago... Well, even though we got strict MOT rules in Serbia as well, it was the only derv that day (-25 degrees celsius). The test rollers were covered in thick layer of ice, so there was next to nothing braking force, yet brake distribution was spot on, ha! The guy was to polite to bring me back some other day, in the end, ice wasn't my fault :icecream:

Passed this morning, that's 5 on the bounce now, just advisory on mot 3 for pitted brake discs:beer:

You cant be braking hard enough, track day will soon sort the pits.

Mines due in a week or so but have a couple of bits that may need sorting. The exhaust needs replacing (if anyone can help I started a separate thread) and there is a 1 inch split on the n/s cv boot. not sure if this would be a fail or not?

A split CV will fail.

Bummer, thought that might be the case. Are these difficult to change, I see the parts are under a fiver but I don't know if I have the right tools.

peterzs
26-03-12, 01:28 PM
Just had the Punto done, passed, but advised grease was coming from n/s cv boot.

Thought it was a pass or fail?????

Captain Peanut
26-03-12, 01:33 PM
More confused now. There was an advisory on last years MOT for the CV boot but can't say if it was split or just tatty.

May have to go the safe route and just replace it.

Captain Slow

Mine passed yesterday with no advisories! :) should expect it to really considering it's done about 2500 miles since the last MOT...

stamford

Mine passed yesterday with no advisories! :) should expect it to really considering it's done about 2500 miles since the last MOT...

Low miles!

Mine went in this morning and tbh was expecting advisories seeing it is nearly 10 years old and does get used!

I've done a shade under 9k miles since last years and all they picked up was tyres being iffy and that is due to the camber as lowered so was expecting that really. Not bad considering the tyres are nearly 3 years old and have covered around 26k miles.

Also mentioned but not advised was leaking O/S inner cv boot, not worried as replacing these when dropping the gearbox. N/S handbrake slightly under par.

So all's good for another year and has never failed an MOT since new.

Also blows holes in the de-cat MOT regs, 3/4 years since de-cat and MIL kit and still passes with flying colours and the new visual check ;)

peterzs

Captain Peanut
13-04-12, 02:45 PM
Thanks Peter, must have worked as have just had a call to say it's passed. Panicked slightly when the phone rang 10 minutes after it was booked in but guess they started it early.

One advisory on the nearside CV boot but otherwise a clean bill of health. Think that deserves a couple of pints tonight and a good clean for the car over the weekend!

stamford
13-04-12, 04:16 PM
Not bad going, another year of hassle free motoring.

peterzs
13-04-12, 05:00 PM
Sounds good, they do have a good history of getting through.

Captain Peanut
13-04-12, 05:05 PM
Interestingly, the garage have advised that the cam belt an tracking should be done soon. His face was a picture when I told him the belts were 12 months old an then showed him the receipt for them doing the tracking last month!

peterzs
13-04-12, 05:08 PM
Suspect they have been told to drum up some work, just unlucky you had it all done!!!!!!!!

Jem
08-05-12, 06:15 PM
And another ZS goes through without any problems. But i could well be saying it failed if the owner of the garage wasn't so nice,I thought i would sit and wait for the mot to be done,Not to long into the mot i saw this man come in chatting to the owner of the garage i heared the owner talking about mots to this guy and then heared him say he has another mot later on.

When my mot was done i was greeted with the nice words saying its passed,But then he said i could of been waiting even longer because a VOSA inspector came in and wanted to check the the mot,Lucky the owner said to him no and made a excuse saying i need to get back,If he had not said that i think VOSA would of done a fail being its a Diesel with no cat.

peterzs
08-05-12, 07:58 PM
Sounds like a lucky escape, always easy to find something thats not 100%.

Still not sure if no cat would = a fail, see when my ones due.

:smile1::smile1::smile1:

Jem
08-05-12, 08:07 PM
Hi Pete

I remember someone saying VOSA being very strict and as the exhaust isn't a complete system without the cat then VOSA would fail it or fine you if it was a on the road check?

Something like that.

As far as the garage mot chaps no cat is fine as its not checked,Not a word was said about the decat. Im sure VOSA would of said something.

peterzs
08-05-12, 08:14 PM
When they do their audit on the garage, you get the feeling they have to find something.

Just to prove they are doing their job and have something to put on their report.

Still got my old cat, so if the worse happens I can switch it back, hopefully used s/s nuts and bolts on the decat!!!!

Jem
08-05-12, 08:21 PM
Yea i still have mine so it wouldn't of been to bad,I have never heared of anyone having the car checked over by vosa awell,I guess vosa do it to make sure garages are doing it right.

Ritchy
08-05-12, 08:27 PM
lucky for you, more like lucky for him, if vosa had found him passing a car that should fail hed of ended up with points and a fine:)

idge2003
08-05-12, 08:46 PM
I had an MOT done last week! It failed but on simple fixes that are being done tomorrow. Also had a few advisories but nothing major again! I got away with the engine light being on as just an advisory which I was glad about because I thought it was a definite fail but apparently no official date has been set for that to come in. Also I was told the lack of a cat only becomes a problem if the car fails the emissions test!

Brett

Jem
08-05-12, 08:47 PM
lucky for you, more like lucky for him, if vosa had found him passing a car that should fail hed of ended up with points and a fine:)

True...,Being a diesel could VOSA say anything to the garage though? As its not part of the test? I know some people on .org had sent vosa a email asking about the new rules and the cat.

(The check for a CAT only applies to petrol engined vehicles which qualify
for a full CAT test. There will be an update to the Inspection Manual in
Spring which will clarify this.)

How i understood it from someone else if vosa get involved at looking at your car then that reply goes out of the window because without a cat its not really a complete working system,And Vosa being strict they would have something to say about that,Who knows how vosa would react??

Phate
08-05-12, 09:11 PM
Car flew through last week, no advisories. :)

Adamzs180
08-05-12, 09:45 PM
It's not only vosa that can intentionally look for the smallest thing to fail a car on. a few years ago i got a "free" mot test from citroen main dealer for my saxo and the tester failed it because of incorrect headlight beam and the sat nav was mounted to high up the windscreen. To say i was not happy was an understatement. I removed the sat nav and asked if he would give me 5 mins to adjust the beam or if he would adjust it for me. He wouldn't he said i'd have to book in a retest and he was too busy that day and couldn't fit it in for another 9 days. What a coincidence outside of the free retest period. After a few choice words i left the garage and went straight to my regular mechanic who booked me in straight away did the beam adjustment then failed the car on emmisions. This just wasn't my day i thought. To cut a long story short the car no longer lives.

Jem
08-05-12, 10:04 PM
Can understand the beam as thats what gets tested but failing it on the sat nav fair enough if it couldn't be moved but im sure they could of been helpful and just took the satnav of the windscreen?

Just a way to try to make money..

Adamzs180
08-05-12, 10:48 PM
yeah the tester was a right a**e. it wasn't so much he failed me on the beam, more that he couldn't give me 10 minutes with an allen key just to adjust it. then it would have passed, despite it failing on emmisions just half an hour later at the next garage.

10-05-12, 02:05 PM
Well I now have another 12 months MOT so think its time to get my new wheels and coilovers on! Also need to go through the garage and sort out all the bits I've collected for it over time!

I have mine next week. Have had to sort a few things first so have ordered:
-new plates (previous owner had wrong font)
-swap bulbs as currently HID's
-swap tail lights for originals (no rear reflector on my tinted ones)
-fix fog light LED switches (currently dont show tell-tale light)
-new front disks ordered to be fitted
-new wipers arrived today
-replacing 2 front tyres and buying extra mk2 wheel for damaged one

Hopefully wont need much in the MOT then!

Well got it passed, failed :-( n/s lower steering joint cover split and a cut in the rear offside tyre, advisory on n/s cv boot. :yikes:

So had a new cover fitted, plus a new boot while it was stripped and a new Hankook Evo12.

Considering the state of the roads not bad I suppose.

so the zs has just failed its mot, on a few points:

n/s track rod end,

but worst of all is the fact that i now hve to drive the fiesta to work in the morning

sh4ggyd00
01-11-12, 06:55 PM

As Peter says, a garage is one option, if you want to do it your self, the stretchy boots and a cone are the best option, you'll still need to separate the shaft from the hub, but won't need to remove the joint from the shaft.

I can recommend this ebay shop http://stores.ebay.co.uk/J-R-CV-JOINTS-DRIVESHAFTS?_rdc=1

Well done Hamish, changed my clutch at 75.000, started getting a bit stiff to get into 1st.

Certainly made it feel better, dont forget to check for a seized, clutch arm, if you get it done.

My a/c works but not as cold as it was, had it re-gassed 4 years ago, so cant complain.

I'm going to explain the MOT process in Spain - Took my Astra yesterday

Get to the main MOT center , its a big warehouse with 5 lanes ( extra 2 for artics ). Go into the office and provide them with the car papers , pay 38 euros and your given a lane number.

Wait for the lane number to appear on the massive LED screen outside. Go to the lane number and your greeted by a unhappy Spaniard.

1st- oil check and fluids.
2nd- lights , indicators ,full beam , light alignment.
3rd - Check the chassis number matches ( under the passengers plastic door thing )
4th - Rear lights , indicators , brake lights , reverse light.
5th - Seatbelt check all round
6th - drive into a metal grid where they basically bounce the car up and down and side to side to check the front and rear suspensions okay
7th - rolling road to check brakes , handbrake
8th- emissions test - rev to 2000RPM
9th - Drive out - this takes less than 10 minutes! wait for the person to arrive back with the papers and a new ITV ( MOT ) sticker to place in the front window

My A/C is still in the car and all good if you need something.

Cheers Dan but i probably will not get it sorted untill next year as there are a few other jobs i want to get done on the Zed 1st.

Cheers Pete it's only when i have been driving the car for more than 45 minutes or it is a hot day i have to use a little bit of force to get her in gear. According to the paper work i have the clutch was replaced in 2010 so that should be ok. I had the A/C re-gassed about two months ago worked great for a couple of weeks then stoped putting out cold air so most likely is a leak somewhere?.

Well done.

Put two Hankooks on the front, had a 4 way alignment check, after getting it back to the o/e settings, the guy said it would wear the front two inner shoulders. Due to the factory set up!!!

So maybe a front to rear swap at some time to lessen the wear.

Thats my one done and dusted.

I use Halfords Autocentres, I know a lot dont rate them, but I never have any probs.

Only thing you have to watch is that they emailed me a reminder, and offered a special price of £35. But I know if you go online you get it for 1/2 price, so booked in for £27.42.

On the day, they reckoned the o/s/r number plate bulb was out, issued a fail and fitted a new one and issued a pass. £10 extra so they got £37.42 in the end, but I was happy at that.

We'll an MOT failure today, but not on the ZS. Second year on the trot Claire's 08 Astra has failed, 2 broken springs this year front and a rear one. Had just done the front brakes and popped on fresh tyres too. Can't remember any fails on my Zeds yet, an inkling there may have been one but not sure.

petet16
15-02-14, 07:43 PM
Some cars seem more prone to broken springs, no idea why.

peterzs
15-02-14, 08:06 PM
With the potholes turning into craters, its a wonder not all the springs are busted.

ZS's do have a good record at getting through.

Hope we dont start to see corrosion problems on the chassis, first thing I did, when they were doing a new s/s exhaust, was to put some underseal on.

Maxfly
15-02-14, 08:14 PM
Aye the astra seems to be one of those that likes springs pete. Claire wants an Audi A1 now but that's just not going to happen lol, told here we wouldn't be skint if her car wouldn't continually fail its MOT ;)

Potholes certainly don't help lol.
Planning to get wire brush and drill out this year and strip back any surface rust on the grey ZS and slap on the underseal, the last two ZS's always got commented on how clean they were underneath so hoping to continue that trend, plan on firing waxoil into all nooks crannies etc too.

Well, I haven't MOT'd a ZS for a few years so was nervous today about putting it in since it is an 11 year old car.

The 180 must be bomb proof, passed no advisories!

The beam pattern needed adjusted, exhaust bracket needed welded back on and a new rear tyre (which I new was an issue as it went flat last month. Turns out a nail was responsible)

MOT prep for the T16 began this week, it's been sorned since October.

First thing was to remove the dehumidifiers, they've done a good job, no signs of mould, or condensation.
Next up was to connect a freshly charged battery, it fired up at the first touch of the key, checked all the obvious stuff like tyres, lights, etc, all good, I need to take the angle grinder and wire brush to the front discs to smarten them up a bit.
I've been going over it with a clay bar to remove the moss, tree sap, and various other stuff that has appeared on the paint work over the winter.
Finally I added 10 litres of fresh fuel and a bottle of Forte petrol treatment, so I reckon next week it'll get booked in for the test, and ptsssh can commence for the summer :w00t:

The SRS light was an issue even though I have no airbags and only one seatbelt left...........so he had to give it a fail on that basis, new tester as well. So over the weekend the soldering iron will be out and doing its thing. It'll be sorted for next Weds when I should be able to get it back to the garage. First time it's had a refusal since new which ain't bad for a 13 year old motor.

If you remove the SRS ECU and the bulb and remove the airbag from the dash and passenger seat (or tape over the markings on them) so you have disabled the system completely I would have thought it should pass.

If you remove the SRS ECU and the bulb and remove the airbag from the dash and passenger seat (or tape over the markings on them) so you have disabled the system completely I would have thought it should pass.

As it stands there are no seats with airbags, no passenger airbag, no drivers airbag, no drivers seatbelt, just the passenger seatbelt assembly left in place, which will be removed at some point. So it does beg the question if the system were removed would it be immune from the MOT test?

Currently I have fitted resistors to fool the system.

It scored a fail, nothing serious, an incorrectly assembled front arb link, my fault for using the wrong size washers when I fitted poly bushes, and a leaking exhaust, which he didn't have problem with but it was screwing with the emissions, so I've spent an hour or so in the sunshine fixing it so I can drop by tomorrow and he'll recheck the emissions and arb link.

Silver car has failed.as per usual the shitty rear brake calipers are a culprit and front to back brake lines excessively corroded and the real bombshell welding required to fill a hole at the front close to the jacking point:cry::cry:.

...........and the real bombshell welding required to fill a hole at the front close to the jacking point:cry::cry:.

It is becoming quite common for rust in this area, especially on later cars.

Mines gonna fail on the n/s/r caliper and horn (failed relay in the BCU I think), hopefully nothing else but I'll make full use of the 10 working days, 4 weekend days and 3 bank holidays days to sort it - it gives me an excuse to get out of the house over xmas - LOL.

the brake lines and caliper while annoyin wouldn't really have been a problem but the welding is a real hassle.i have a friend having a go at that weather permitting tomorrow .needed the car for the weekend as well but now going to have to do the other work on it and hook or by crook it needs to be back on the road by Tuesday night as I need it to get to Prestwick airport in the early hours of wednesay morning as we fly out to the canaries for a week ove Christmas.bah bloody humbug.cant even drag the grey car out and use it as its mot is overdue as well.
