Right Its Time To Address This Problem On The ZS that makes me want to Burn it

Im gonna find this very hard to explain but ill try........ when the car is in neutral the gear stick honestly feels like its connected to nothing and wobbles around like a fat man on a treadmill

When in gear it moves fine etc sometimes when i try put it into 3rd it crunches

Now im just wondering if grimmys and ritchys were the same really and me worrying over nothing

it needs addressing though as i want shut in the summer......I have an idea what i want too to replace it

IIRC it's the bushes in the gear linkage that go and are relatively easy to replace. Sure someone will be along soon enough to confirm or deny.

Mine has done 87k and feels tight. Now I am not sure if the link rod is the same on your box but it has been known for the roll pin to come adrift on the PG1 box causing a sloppy feel.

how does one go about fixing that is it a box out job???

If it is similar, Ritchy will know this, then it is an under the car job, easily fixed with a hammer and a punch. However it is a case of checking all likely causes.

Dan1971 had the same with his blue derv, think he bought a linkage bush set and his garage fitted them. Not a bad job, just have to get under the car and at the linkage.

Had just a quick search under IB5 gearbox linkage,
This seems to be a rare part (UKN000120) try Rimmer Bros or a scrappy for a low mileage later 1400-1600 ZR-ZS, ford Puma has similar IB5 box but I cant vouch for the linkage being the same.
Ritchy would be the man to ask..

Never really looked at the lunkage, it is an ib5 box, will be a worn bush matter of removing it,easuring up and fitting a new bush

Looked around and .org said Moto build did a repair kit. Might be worth a call.

http://www.moto-build.co.uk/spares.cfm

and what .org were saying

best of luck with it.

Diagnoisis is not Good

George has just had a look at it and Hes 95% certain the gearbox is Shafted :(

For the price he quoted for replacement though im not gonna argue but if it had been anymore then the car would be unfortunately another one going to the scrappy.......

Snot happy but what can ya do :(

Hard luck, what was the trouble with the box????

Recons the chap before Clive owned it ragged **** out of it and has fooked the gates on the box

Gonna try a new linkage first but probs not that

then if that fails its a new box time

MG6Turbo
22-02-12, 04:34 PM
Yeah, had a look, the gear stick moves the rod immediately and it doesnt feel right when you cross the gate, feels like the gate is off to an angle.

Linkage has only done 50k which to be fair is nothing for parts these days, they are designed to last 100k.

So diagnosis is box, but going to try a linkage as a cheaper option, if it fixes it then he pays for it, if it doesnt he dont. Cant be fairer than that.

I know how you feel mate, but I just upgraded to the LSD box from Goldie. My old box had done 100k though.

MG6Turbo

Well we shall see if it is the selector rod, but doubt it.

you have a pg1 box blair, bobs got a ford iB5 box, worth looking on ebay ect, ive got a brand new gearbox sitting there ready for mine when i do the clutch, would recon youd be able to get one for about £200, cheaper if you look about

gonna try the linkage first if that doesnt solve it im gonna save up the cash i need and get G do it for me instead of skinting myself for it

makes sense to me really its not like the car isn't driveable just sometimes gear changes can be a bit tough

Ritchy
22-02-12, 05:30 PM
im going to be overhauling everything soon, new clutch, flywheel, release bearing, gearbox, might rebush all the linkage as well, new pedal box,

peterzs
22-02-12, 05:37 PM
Good on George giving you the cheapest option first, sounds like a win, win plan.

Hope you get away with just the linkage.

Can this be sorted with the UJ mod, seems quite a bit of work, but if you are handy with the spanners looks good.

Smokey
22-02-12, 05:56 PM
Yeah, fingers crossed its the linkage.

Bobdope2002
22-02-12, 06:11 PM
see what happens hopefully can sort it out cheaply but if it has to have the gearbox replaced ,ill save up for it then just pay out for it, and have then not skinted myself over the month which im sure G can understand

Never came across a knackered IB5 yet, good strong box.

They can be bought new and cheap from eBay. There was a boy recently selling one for £80 brand new on ZR forum.

MG6Turbo
22-02-12, 07:04 PM
Depends on how its been driven the first 50k of its life really.

I was suprised, as they appear to be stronger than a r65 box, but then ford boys say they are crap. So horses for corses really.

G

Ritchy
22-02-12, 07:07 PM
ib5 is much better than r65, and my dad says they are better than the pg1, which he doesnt rate at all, mind you when i say he says pg1 is bad, he actually said theyre good because they go wrong lol

MG6Turbo
22-02-12, 07:14 PM
Ive put over 200bhp through a std ib5 with a turbocharged 1.4k.

The box never faultered and was given a hard time when testing the car at Bruntingthorpe proving ground.

However, i made sure the clutch was used when changing gear and didnt try to ram the stick in like a chav !

lol, why would you have sent it to the scrappy just because it got a knackered gearbox?

Think my gearbox has done the same today :-(
Drove to shops fine, back in then put it to reverse and something went ?
Gearbox is now looser than an old Amsterdam Ho..
Very sloppy gear change to get it home.
