View Full Version : Biggest Automotive Regret...

ZS
26-03-12, 08:03 PM
With all of my cars I have one huge regret and that is swapping my ZS out for this stupid crappy 75...

I am at the stage now where I want another ZS 180... and I think it has to be a Saloon Mk2! (Had a Mk1 Hatch and a Mk1 Saloon already)

I don't have a huge amount to spend on one though so I might be stuck with the 75 for a while.

TBH the 75 is not that bad and I've now "ironed out" most, if not all, of the bugs... but my goodness have I fallen out of love with the car now! When I get around to selling it the new owner will get a well sorted car... its just not the car for me...

So, what are your biggest regrets within your car history? and why? :)

oh... and I saw this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-ZS-2-5-180-2005-55-face-lift-vented-front-wings-65k-miles-/180847538309?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2a1b5a7085 - damn wish I had the money... lol

I kinda regret getting rid of my mk1 120 in trophy blue S much as I love my 180 I still feel sad when I look at a picture of the old car what I would say is my biggest regret is that I waited to long to learn to drive I should have done it when I was 17 instead of 21 .

Interesting you saying that Sam, I really thought you had made the right decision due to the requirements for everyday life. It's good to hear that former owners always miss them and come back, just shows what a great car they really are. On paper they are not much to write about but when driven you get a totally different view on it.

As for previous selling mistakes, yes I've had plenty and those that stick out the most was my HSX Chevette and my Vauxhall Firenza, both worth a bit now. That's the reason why I still have the ZS after nearly 7 years as I would regret it if I sold it.

Is there a limit ?

Off the top of my head - selling my Black Mk1 saloon for the Red Mk2 hatch. Just wasn't the same. I saw the Red - alcantara interior - and just thought yep - got to have it.

But, when I got it home and looked at the two of them, I just wanted to keep the Mk1. It just felt more - me. But, the Mk2 was bought and paid for and the Mk1 sold to a nice chap who's on here now and again and when he came for it and drove it away I was honestly - sad.

Over a chunk of metal - Go figure that out .....

As my other thread I to want a mk2.

Ive come to the conclusion the mk2 is better looking with a newer reg but the mk1 is better built

Mk1 build with mk2 mods ftw.

ZS
26-03-12, 08:25 PM
Mk1 build with mk2 mods ftw.

Ahem... My Mk1 180 with the MK2 mods, used to get loads of talk at work... everyone at work were shocked when I got rid of it, they all liked it.

I think the XPower Duel exit exhausts were exceptionally good when mixed with the BMC for noise and looks :)

TBH with everything thats going on in my life (family issues etc) I miss having something that was my "slice of luxury" - still really should pay off the credit cards before buying another...

Now if I could get £5k for the tourer.... ;) lol

Well its either that or I go buy myself a 650 Bandit... or maybe a VFR800... or... lmao

My derv ZS still makes me smile when I walk back to it in a car park, its normally parked on its own, as far as I can get it away from other cars!!!

Interesting you saying that Sam, I really thought you had made the right decision due to the requirements for everyday life.

A few facts that might shock you.

I pay more in insurance for the 75 Tourer than I did for the modified ZS 180.

The 180 was better fuel economy round town (when driven sensibly - of course motorway driving the 75 wins hands down)

the 75 *feels* more than twice as heavy as the zs did... in reality its probably only 1.5 times as heavy

I could fit more into the ZS Saloon boot than I can into the 75 tourer with the load cover accross (of course without it thats not the case)

I could fit three child seats into the back of the ZS saloon... I can't quite do it in the 75!

It cost me £85 to fill up the tank in the 75 yesterday, and that was only 400 miles I had done since last fillup - the ZS in comparrison used to do 320 miles to £50 (but I am compairing prices from 6 months ago to today)

The 75 is a CDT Diesel... surely this should be mega epic fuel consumption and cheaper insurance????

peterzs

Long as you dont chip them, ZS

ZS
26-03-12, 08:35 PM
Long as you dont chip them, ZS

Its better now its chipped... but still not where I would like it to be!

high 20's low 30's round town... before it was chipped it was mid to high 20's...

used to be high 40's low 50's on motorways... after chip its now roughly 55 mpg motorway driving

Oh! and I still get much more enjoyment out of my MG F than I do out of the 75 :p lol I think maybe I shouldn't be a Diesel driver??

stamford
26-03-12, 08:41 PM
You would think the diesel 75 would be cheaper allround, I am somewhat surprised and disappointed as I wouldn't mind one but after this probably not.

ZS

Owners on the other site are suggesting that my injectors either need cleaning or replacing... they have suggested putting some millers into it... millers what I don't know, changing the fuel filter yesterday for the correct type may have helped, I will find out soon I guess... they say high 40's round town and high 50's motorway driving should be expected...

This particular car I am sorting out, but I think was let down by **** poor maintenance by the previous owners mechanic (the guy who owned before won't touch anything mechanical and trusts his local mechanic) so another 75 cdt might be much better...

TBH the car is much better than it was when I got it as well (you had to wear brown trousers then to pull out into traffic... dead MAF) its just that now I can only see the negative with the car and am all outta love for it I think... maybe once I start recouping some of the lost money back again and iron out any remaing bugs that things will get better for this relationship (thats what it is! a relationship between you and a car..) but we will see when it goes in for its MOT in a few weeks!

ZS - the thing is mate - you've got rid of what was one of the best Mk1s on this site and you know that. You went sensible and maybe weren't ready. No fettling with injectors is going to change that.

What will change it is Alan's Orange Grove 180 !

stamford
26-03-12, 08:54 PM
True, we have all been there and made 'sensible' purchases only to regret it and think why the hell did I do that! Look on the plus side, you can still get a good ZS and you will find an owner for the Tourer once sorted i'm sure.

Unless he'd do a swap for the 75 its a wee bit out of my price range... and Bolton is a long way away to get a car ;) - however it is a very nice looking car and I have been tempted when looking at the ad a few times...

I always put a couple of cupfulls of Millers Power Sport 4, into a full tank of Derv.

Its suppose to up the cetane by up to 4 numbers.
increases power by 17.5% more bhp
increases mpg by 7%
reduces emissions up to 70% less exhaust smoke, 20% less carbon
cleans injectors.

As it says on the bottle!!!!! Is a bit pricey £11.49 but treats 10 x 50 ltr tanks.

I have a policy of only doing stupid things. I don't think Ill ever sell the ZS, I was just commenting on another site about how I don't think Ive ever gotten out of it not grinning like a lunatic.

I do regret taking my old escort off road, though. Ive still got it locked away, but it'll need a bit of work to get back on the road. I might make it into a track car, but no matter how much I throw at it, it'll never be as good as a standard ZS around a track. I do have a policy of doing stupid things, though... did I mention that?

About a month before the roundabout I took the front o/s out.

Went to a scrap yard, got the steering arm, plus other steering bits, new front wing and a couple of new wheels and tyres.

All for £1.50.

Parked up were three Vauxhall Crestas, looked immaculate, asked why they were there. All the floors were rusted out along the sills, only hanging on by the front and rear bulkheads.

The Talbot was scrapped as I managed to hit the same area twice, took it in to be tracked up and the great H beam chassis was cracked. In those days they didnt weld or plate up damage.

Get some pics up, my one was shiny black, white sidewall tyres!!! Apart from a sky blue o/s/f wing!!!

buying the 180, should of gone for the s4 i was looking at instead. Cost me a fortune to repair due to the many issues, now its running sweet but kinda lost heart with it. Add that to rover going under and the value of the car quartering in value overnight seems a bit of a financial regret (still looks great though :) ) , now i have no part ex value to put against anything decent so kind of stuck with the car of have to go for something boring.

I regret selling my ZS. I only had it just over a year but I kinda lost faith after it only made a 3bhp increase over standard after I spent thousands on it. Looking back I should have kept it a bit longer as it was a fantastic car, was mechanically solid and was in a fairly rare spec with really low miles as it was on of the MG factory cars that had been stashed away when they collapsed.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/11559_102299136461919_100000455006145_59555_239673 8_n.jpg

That and fitting the extreme spoiler to it. It was just before the whole Euro look thing really gained momentum and I've since seen a load of really nice saloons with no spoiler.

Second has to be my first Defender.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/13541_101522396539593_100000455006145_39154_412748 4_n.jpg

It was a really nice Defender with key mods already done - but mainly due to my in-experiance with Defenders and buying it purely as a toy... I wrecked it. Too much heavy offroading and 2 rather hefty accidents later it was in need of alot of repair time that I couldn't justify giving it.

Third has to be the Astravan that replaced it. it was a fantastic looking van, was soooo practical and it got attention where ever it went - even just down to the local shops!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/249516_219608248064340_100000455006145_776291_5531 065_n.jpg

But it's undoing was that gutless 1.7cdti engine. Going from driving Susan's remapped 200bhp 1.9cdti to a baby 117bhp 1.7cdti was a killer and I got bored with it really quickly - again after spending a small fortune on it!

There seems to be a trend here...

My only regret in all my car history, is selling my MK2 Escort RS1800. I was only 19 and couldnt afford to get it repaired. Scrap for peanuts. Only car (apart from the ZS) that I actually cared for. The others were loved when owned, but not missed once they went.
I am never selling my TY ZS, know I would never find another. He is mine, more than just metal and rubber. An extension of my personality. Even if I do get my DAYTONA, I will still keep the ZS.

Only 2 real regrets:

The first was letting heart rule head and buying a BMW 318ti Compact in M Sport guise a few years back. The HPI was crippling and has left me with debts that I'm still paying back despite the car being long gone. Was a bloody hoot to drive though, especially late night sideways action

The second was not shopping around more before buying the ZS. I don't regret buying it per se but now realise that I could probably have got a lot more for my money with some more research. That said I was on a tight schedule due to the insurance company taking the hire car away and it's given me a perfect rolling project.
