Hi first time posting. Ok went town today and car cut out after sounding very rough. Got towed home, fuse in engine compartment had blown. managed track this down to being a knackered coil pack. Have replaced coil pack ht leads and spark plugs. Car started was still very rough sounding. Next minute smoke comes out from the new coil pack, which has now melted. Now stuck as to what this could be. The original coilpack had also melted when we took it out. Any ideas would be helpfull as to what to check before puting another new coilpack on. Cheers in advance. forgot to mention its an 02 1.8 petrol

I would either say it is the alternator over charging, a wiring fault in the coil pack wiring, or a knackered driver in the ecu.

We been back out looking at it, and seems the wires that are suposed to be cable tied havent and the wires have cut through. Looks like soldering iron is out tomoz

I had a similar fault on a Freelander. The coil gets it earth path through the Ecu which controls the current flow as well as the timing! If the earth is shorted to ground before the Ecu the coil will fail very quickly!! Hope you get it sorted.

Glad its sorted, might be worth checking the wiring by the ECU, as they tend to rub there, and by the throttle body connectors.
