So I had some spare time today so I decided to look at installing an induction kit.

Looking at the cramped engine bay on the ZS I decided there was little room for a filter and I don't want to cause heat soak by putting a cone filter directly behind the rad.

So I thought I would construct my own cold air induction kit by using the original airbox and a pipercross induction kit I had lying around.

Here are the pics of my creation:

Firstly I removed the original airbox and then cut out part of the top section so it could house the cone filter.

Then I cleaned out the oil and muck out of the out airbox and re-installed in back in the car.

This is the induction kit I'm fitting.

I played with the connections and trial fitted a couple of times before tightening everything up and finally fitting an oil breather.

I then took it out in the pouring rain for a test drive and I must say I am very impressed so far with the results and it's making some lovely sounds :)

Not seen it done that way before.
TBH your better of just rooting the filter through to the passengers side of the bumper. Its very easy to do with plenty of room. You wont get any heatsoak that way.
Filter looks a tad small for a 2.5 litre...? should flow enough air if its clean though

Not sure you will be getting any any cool airflow that way because the std intake just roots to the inner bumper.

I like that, a good use of the old panel filter housing. Have you considered a cold air feed using the old resonator link pipe at the bottom fed into the inner wing?

I originally had the induction kit on my 3.2 crossfire so it should be fine I think

I used to have an Integra TypeR as a track car, the standard airbox on those uses a cone filter inside so that's where I got my inspiration from ;)

If its a track project water shouldn't be much of an issue.

Where is the cold air coming from? Bottom of standard airbox via a pipe to inner wing or from the resonator box?

Standard airbox via the pipe to the the inner wing, I have removed the resonator box

Will 2nd the never seen it done like that before. Clever thinking there & looking smart. Not sure exactly how much free airflow will be going through like that but if it doesnt feel like its being strangled then its all good. Good water protection for sure :happy:

Good old fashioned engineering.

Personally I feel that the O/E filter is very restrictive as it was originally designed for the 2.0 KV6 in the Rover 45. It's location is a perfect heat soak and unfortunatly I doubt your solution will avoid this much.

However my mate who built "the mental maestro" as featured on a pre Clarkson topgear had a similar arrangment on his car which worked well.

It would be interesting to see what inlet temps you are running, my scangauge shows my setup runs about 5' above ambiant.
