In my service book it says that the belts were done but it is only hand written with no garage stamp!! So can't rely on that really, but I noticed on a pulley on the auxillary belt (I think it's that anyway) there is a tip-ex mark. Is this a sign that the cam belts were done too or can this be from another job (excuse my ignorance)

Here's a pic:

No, I wouldn't read anything into the white mark, it could have been there from build, like the yellow paint mark on the stabilizer arm in your pic.

Has it got the name of the garage - despite not having a stamp ? If so - give them a ring.

When mine were done in the diesel - the guys at TCS couldn't find the stamp so it was hand written ....

Unfortunately not, I would of gave them a call. I do however have the chaps name who used to own it and I managed to get a number for him but every time I ring there's no answer :(

Did you find the car through eBay?

Should still be able to find the contact details if you did.

My red 180 was the same. I took the covers of and the belts where "Gates" Not rover branded so they must have been done.

Just an idea but if they are rover it doesnt mean they havnt been done.

I'll try to have a look, I am doing the accelerator cable tomorrow so I will have a look then. Car was from a garage tho and not Ebay.

Can you still use Rover belts? I've just had to do the belts on the Impreza because it's 5 years old - even with only 32k miles on them

Since it's more than 5 years since Rover stopped making them are they still safe to use?

There have been a few posts saying they will be fresh stock, I have my doubts so have gone for standard autofactor's stuff sold for the kv6 in the freelander. Prices are beter aswell.

MGR never made their own timing belts, but any that are in MGR packaging are likely to be at least 7 years old.

well that was what I was meaning

It's a good point tho, if xpart are selling old stock does the manufacturers warranty still apply?

There have been posts of tensioners failing that have been fitted my garages. You have no chance of any warranty.

Garage will blame the gear if they dont suply it.

I'd be checking the manufacturing dates on anything fitted now then

Worth bearing in mind, like already said tho, why not just go with the Freelander belts that are still being made
