Needless to say I didn't get the tool for the locking wheel nuts. After a bit of a google I found a few people say you need a number to order a new one. Can someone please tell me what format the number is and how many digits?

Thanks! :smile2:

The number should be on a card with the manual and service record.

Have you got the O/E spec cream cheese locking nuts?
There are otherways to remove them.

hi man

not sure what you mean by 'cream cheese' but the front look like there is a key-slot but my key doesn't fit

Ihave got some numbers in the service book but it doesn't say if they're for the nuts

So I guess I'll be banging on a socket and getting them off and replace them with some off of ebay - any recommendations?

He's referring to them being soft and rubbish. The key slot thing you can see is in fact a cover covering the locking nut.

Do you have one of these:

This is a tool to remove the cover.

Should look a bit like this when cover is removed but could have one or two slots down the side. Just depends what nut you have.

& this is the actual tool.

I think he means that the original locking nuts are soft metal and are easily removed with a smaller socket and a big hammer!

Had to do that to a set of mine once :)

Or "toffee" would have been an acceptable alternative.

They are pretty flimsy to be honest. McGuard I think mine were?

+1 for McGaurd nuts, can get them off the bay, or nip to a Halfrauds store as they normally have a decent stock of them (around £35 for a set IIRC)

This may help.

We have just had to scrap the Wife's 214 due to HGF. The locking wheel nut from her 1997 rover 214 is the same as my 2002 ZS. Loos like same locking wheel nuts across the range.

They are the same but different. Its the socket that is soft. Seems to be made of brass. I couldn't get a socket onto mine so used a locking nut remover from halfords. Had to take it back once as I couldn't get the socket out but other than that it worked well. Garage wanted an hours labour to remove it :-(

If you have one of the above sockets but it doesn't fit, buff one of the lugs off and try using it with just one. Take it easy and they'll come off and you can replace them. Wouldn't recommend this as a permanent feature though.

The biggest problem is they elongate and go oval hence not purchasing properly. Squash it back to shape may help. Easiest way I've found is hammering an impact socket over them to remove and replace with a McGard type.

One of the ways to do it, or like mentioned previously the removal tool from Halfords however they do not always work and you'll still need a new set of lockers afterwards. And the keys all look pretty much the same, and finding one that fits two cars in your possesion is a raretiy, but they have a number stamped into them that tells you what set you have....
