After owning 2 Zs's, 2 ZR's a TF and an F, I have finally managed to get a 180 ZS. We already have a Pumesta track car from which we have learned a lot about preparation and requirements so have decided to go bigger and better with the 180.

It's an 03 plate Mk1 in Silver with 62k on the clock. It's taxed and tested until February. Only things wrong with it are it has had a very small bump on the rear that has been repaired and repainted, although not to the highest standard. A small crack on the front splitter and a small crack in the rear bumper. Also the front O/S CV joint is knackered and clicks like a typewriter.

Engine is very smooth and powerful and other than the clicky drive shaft it drives perfect. Drove it back 60 miles without a problem.

Someone has fitted 40 profile tyres on 3 wheels and left a 45 profile on one, it has a ZR stainless big bore back box and an open K & N in the engine bay....bless em they tried.

It has a rather nice JVC stereo and the interior isnt bad at all, the drivers seat bolster is still in one piece although there is a small cig burn in the seat bottom.

All this for the princely sum of £400.

Starting tomorrow, I will be stripping everything out to take it back to a bare shell and measuring up for the roll cage.

Will start posting pictures from tomorrow.

My god, you can pick up a 180 for as little as this
Quite looking forward to seeing how you go about this, will stay tuned

Sounds fun, look forward to seeing the end results.

What track to do get round???

Will this be a bought or made cage? I made enquiries but found it very expensive. If I was going to seriously go back to tracking it I was going to make my own which I have done before when I raced on the ovals.

Good buy that.

Noobrider

we will make our own cage....buying them is prohibitively expensive £800 plus. We can make one for around £150.

To be honest we are on a bit of a budget as we are only a small garage and we currently run one track car - the Pumesta. Running a 2nd one will mean doing it gradually and as cheaply as possible.

Pumesta stats -
Ford Fiesta Setec S.
Engine - 1.7 Puma analogue, Pipercross cold air induction kit, silicone hoses throughout, silicone plug leads - Straight through handmade exhaust system with 4 into 1 manifold decatted - Magnaflow back box to keep within noise limits for track.
Electrics - all Puma transferred into Fiesta right up to the lights and cable driven speedo transplanted
Body - completely stripped out with much of the none stress point steel cut out. All sound deadening removed, Rear shock mounts braced with welded heavy gauge tubing, lower and upper OMP strut braces on front fitted. Carbon bonnet.
Suspension - standard Zetec S shocks with Eibach 45mm lowered and stiffened springs. All bushes polybushed with powerflex bushes. Puma racing rear axle 1" spacers with 2 degrees camber.
Wheels - Team Dynamics proline withe Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres.
OMP steering wheel - 4 point harnesses - lightweight fibreglass racing seats

Rolling road tested 127BHP top speed 138 Mph weight 735Kg - We are currently making a cage for this so will be good practise for the ZS. All of what we have done here will be carried over int the ZS with a few more mods and updates and each car will teach us more about building performance cars.

The last track this was driven on was the full Silverstone GP circuit, unfortunately we were outclassed by a lot of much more powerful cars, Evo's etc as this is a speed track and not one that totally benefits the superb handling of the Pumesta. That is where the ZS will come in.

Silverstone Track Day video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ObYn8BU6bk&feature=plcp

PeterZS - Our nearest track is Blyton Park, but Cadwell, Oulton and Croft are all about the same distance away. Don't like Elvington, its seems a waste of money. Donnington isn't too far away either.

Was going out at Trax, got to 9 miles of Silverstone and popped a turbo pipe of the ZS Derv. Spent the day getting a new jubilee clip and fitting it. Missed the talk, so didnt go out 14.20 should have been on track, it started raining just about then, so wasnt too bothered.

Like your vid, as someone said, at least two should have been black flagged for overtaking on the right, plus another one in the bend area.

That fezzy looks like loads of fun could do with some uprated cams though get close to 150bhp then although buying the ZS was probably cheaper lol with all these track cars Im tempted to strip mine out :)

Loving the track car threads & the more I see the more I want to do one of my own.
ZS180 MK1 just seems perfect as can be on track for silly money.
Look forward to your updates.

Put the car on the ramp today to have a good look around. Very clean underneath all bushes and ball joints are good so very little to do really

As promised some pics, started the big strip today....anyone want any interior bits?

Next job, get rid of all the sound deadening...that takes ages of scraping....

peterzs
22-09-12, 05:50 PM
Have to have a guess at the weight of all the stuff you have stripped out.

Bet it would be more than you think!!!

Noobrider
22-09-12, 06:02 PM
I'm guessing around 80 Kg, the carpet is very heavy as are the front seats but the drivers seat is the heaviest. It will be replaced with a fibreglass race seat but is in there for the time being so we can move it about - no passenger seat

There was three large pieces of steel at the back and under the rear seats that weighed a lot add all the seat belts and it does rack up a bit....

So technically I've removed a large passenger so far lol

The sound deadening is everywhere and weighs a lot, hope to get the car down to somewhere like 1000 - 1100Kg

Hi mate, yes a full year since we opened and it has done pretty well.

Upgraded the MGF to a Cool Blue TF but also added a couple of ZS's.

23-09-12, 04:25 PM
Ive sold the TF, ZTT is going tonight. We have got a ZS180 though to make up for it, plus the V8 MGB project.

Noobrider
25-09-12, 06:16 PM
Anyone know how much all the sound dedadening weighs. Started removing it and its a bit of a task as its on nearly every panel. When we took it out of the Fiesta it came to 10Kg and it wasn't as thick or as prolific.

I'll try and bag it up as I go along and weigh it at the end

Maxxed_Ross
25-09-12, 10:24 PM
About 6kg came out of my ZR track car, so I'd expect the zs to have a touch more

Noobrider
26-09-12, 06:01 PM
well I managed the rear passenger footwell and three quarters of the front passenger footwell today....that little lot was 3 Kg. with the back seat area, boot and parcel shelf and same again on the drivers side, I'm guessing its got to be worth 12Kg

Nice! Good buy there too, wish i could spare the cash as i am approx. 20 mins up the road from Donny! But don't have the cash, it all goes on the fam and keeping the Zed on the road lol. Though i may strip it for a few months to see if the MPG changes....And i could find the leak....

Noobrider
26-09-12, 09:17 PM
Not even started on the engine yet, the 50 mile return journey from buying it certainly saw the petrol gauge drop....didn't measure how much though.

Mind you MPG isn't top of our list :smile1:

Have some friends in Burton on Trent and have done Donny a couple of times.

theboynoz
26-09-12, 09:25 PM
Yeah good point, i guess tracking it throws MPG out the window lol.

Might have to get to Donny sometime soon, will see.

The track we will be testing on will be Blyton Park. Its a relatively new track based on an airfield. It's fairly quick an not too technical , almost a mini Silverstone. The best thing is its cheap at £99 for a full open pit lane day. Its a bit narrow but overtaking is OK.

think i got 14 kilos sound deadening out of my hatch when i did it, i heated it up first so it scrapes off quite easy

It does mount up, when I was oval racing I too heated this stuff up and scraped it off, so much easier. Even the inner door skins have it, on hotrods this is not a problem as we de-skin the doors to save more weight and also fabricate the door bars so they enter the door and touch the outer skin.

Noobrider
27-09-12, 04:53 PM
Yeah, I've been using the heat gun to scrape it, some of it comes off better cold, depends how well its stuck down.

However today the heat gun spat out a few flames and gave up the ghost.....

Plan B...lets decat it..

Discovered an odd problem today...... I was continuing with the sound deadening removal, horrid job, when I noticed the gap between the rear passenger wheel and the wheel arch was quite high, so I measured it.

Wheel centre to wheel arch was 15 inches whereas all the other gaps were 13 and a half inches????

A good look at the shocks and springs didn't show anything and looking underneath the car doesn't show anything. I know the car has had a shunt in the rear, more toward that corner but there is no deformity in the shock mount area.... bit of a mystery at the moment.

Not a lot of progress this week, still removing sound deadening but I have bought some expanding foam.....all will be revealed later.

I had planned to spend Saturday on the 180 but had a big job in - MG related.

I had been asked to fit an engine into an MGF...not just any engine though, a 270bhp supercharged 1.9 K Series. This proved a bit trickier than first thought and took until 8pm on Saturday night.....consequently the ZS didn't get touched.

Oh well...there's always next Saturday.

Would love a go in that MGF ! How do you get 270 from a 1.9, but only the same from an SC KV6 ?

So what did you do with it then - just fit ? Was the engine all sorted for you or anything on your part in terms of fit or improvements ?

Dan, I'm afraid I just fit it, it was a VVC engine with forged pistons bored to 1.9 everything totally brand new. It has been developed with Emerald as it runs an Emerald ECu with variable mapping. The supercharger is from a Mini Cooper and the owner has designed and built an amazing intercooler set up.

Emerald have predicted 270bhp but to add to that he also has a 100bhp NOS kit. The engine has its own plumbed in fire extinguisher kit and there is a hydraulic rear airofoil on the boot that is connected to both the engine output and the brake system with a manual over ride.

The whole car is a developent projectand the owner is a very competant and accomplished designer/engineer/mechanic. We were only facilitating the build engine swap as we had the equipment and some knowledge. The owner will be completing the rest of the build up.

Fairly major job dropping the engine, gearbox and subframe - Ed China style - onto my toolbox, then using the ramp to lift out the engine. once out the subframe and gearbox were lifted onto the floor and the partially built engine was hoisted into the waiting subframe. Then the whole lot was bolted back into the car.

This was all made a bit more complicated as the F runs hydro elastic suspension which needed degassing for detachment and then regassing once complete. Plus all the other bolt ons, pipes for NOS and extinguishers, wiring looms for data logging etc.

He has promised to bring the car round once it is complete.

OK a few bits on order, nothing special but things to keep me focused in the job. Set of bonnet and boot pins, OMP Suede steering wheel and boss kit - seatbelt harness - eyeing up a seat.

Booked it's first track day for 28th December at Blyton Park.

Fianlly some bits arrived - I fitted the harness today, albeit to a standard seat lol but its there....

Today my OMP suede wheel and boss kit arrived along with 2 sets of bonnet pins, one for the bonnet one for the boot. Hopefully I may get some time tomorrow to fit them....pics will follow.

Seat arrived today. Not bad for the money, £50 but certainly not a racing seat. Weighs just short of 7Kgs so a fair saving over the original seat. Quite comfy considering there is no padding, if a little on the wide side.

I'll post pics when I fit it, it was a bit busy in the garage today so didn't have time. At least the harness is properly located in the slots.

Bear in mind I'm in a rush to get it on track to assess what I need before spending proper money on proper bits.

Next came some tyres we had lying around - Dunlop sports maxx - these are 225/45 R17. They do catch a touch on the plastic inner arch so I will have to remove the inner arches but they give a good wide stance and grip pretty well.

Was hoping to change the CV joint today as well but didn't have time. The seat took ages to get sorted as I had to make from scratch some frames to fit the original runners and get the seat adjuster working.

Maxxed_Ross
17-11-12, 08:28 PM
that is a weird looking seat, but it'll do the job!

Are you fitting a passenger seat? I always find track days more fun if you can scare... ahem I mean demonstrate your skills to some un-suspecting females lol

peterzs
17-11-12, 08:33 PM
On some of the ZS's there have been instances of the original seat mountings in the floor failing.

Dont know if they could do with a reinforcing plate to spread the load, but I'm sure you know a lot more than me, re the safety bits.

Maxxed_Ross
17-11-12, 08:35 PM
perhaps that's why the touring cars mounted the seat as part of the roll cage

peterzs

Steve mead
17-11-12, 08:53 PM
Needs a nice extreme spoiler on the back.

Maxxed_Ross
17-11-12, 08:56 PM
the big spoiler knocks 5mph off the top speed and does naff all for downforce... so there's no point on a track car

Steve mead
17-11-12, 08:58 PM
But it's not actually a racing car, and I doubt any ZS will get up to its full potential anymore.

Maxxed_Ross
17-11-12, 09:00 PM
that's not the point though, if it knocks speed off then it's creating drag... even on a track car if you've got to the hassle of stripping it all out every little helps

Nobrainer
17-11-12, 10:07 PM
And dont forget more drag = more fuel too

18-11-12, 10:12 AM
But it's not actually a racing car, and I doubt any ZS will get up to its full potential anymore.

how exactly?

Noobrider
18-11-12, 04:29 PM
The seat is a cheapy put me on for a bit job but it only weighs 6Kgs as opposed to the original seat which is about 12Kgs. They cost £50 new. Once I'm done with it I will convert it into an office chair. I'm after a top dollar seat eventually but funds are a little tight at the moment and I want to get out on track next month.

The spoiler is coming off completely, I think its off a Rover 45 as the car has had a rear end bump at some point.

No its not a racing car, its a hobby and a bit of fun. BUT... I would like to pay homage to the BTCC Hotwheels team and create a bit of a replica....one for my own self gratification and two, to advertise our garage witha bit of a head turner.

Main point of building the car is for me to have fun

I will paint it black at some point. Chased up the vinyls today so waiting for a response.

I'm working on a BTCC spoiler at the moment. Being an R/C aircraft builder and designer I have some experience in aerodynamics and building composite wings so I'm going to apply some of that knowledge to a big rear wing that actually works properly. Noted Maxxed Ross's comments about the beefed up boot lid.

Need to at least roll my arches to accommodate the 225 tyres as they do catch but it will give me the excuse to widen the arches at some point.

Stripped down the power steering pump and I think I've fixed the leak...its gradually bleeding through so there is less noise from the pump and it doesn't seem to leak anymore.

Lost a bit of get up and go with it today due to the weather...it was very cold and wet today and I just didn't seem to have the enthusiasm...kept nipping back in the office to get warm

Maxxed_Ross
26-11-12, 07:50 PM
I'm going to take some pictures of the wing and bootlid when I get back onshore

As for the wing itself, touringcarspares were selling GRP replica wings. Tony folded up the company a few months ago but it might be worth giving him a phone to find out where he got them from

Fit brand new CV joint...no more clicking.

Removed the coil over sleeves and reverted back to standard suspension. Spring rates weren't high enough on the front end, may just wait and save up for some proper coil overs up to the job. No biggie though they will go onto the ZS120 instead.

removed the inner plastic arches that were fouling on the larger tyres, rolled the arches for a bit of extra clearance.

I was going to replace the power steering pump but it got to 4.30pm and.... I couldn't be arsed lol. I've nothing booked in this Saturday so will do it then.

Need to clean out the inside of the car as it is full of bits of sound deadening chips, odd nuts and bolts and pieces of plastic.

Full service next with new brakes all round and I think it's about ready for its trackday debut on the 28th.

Noted Maxxed Ross's comments about the beefed up boot lid.

if you get one sorted let me know as i will buy one of you

OK thought I'd better update this thread as I seem to have got carried away in another thread.

Steering wheel, seat and harness all fitted http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b35/Nickm130766/IMG00569-20121117-1439.jpg

Engine serviced and oil changed, a good runthrough all the suspension components to make sure they were sound and removed the coil over sleeves and springs as I wasn't confident the front spring rates were high enough. Reverted back to standard suspension and ride height.

Then on the back of the transporter and off to Blyton Park for a wet but very enjoyable track day.

The Pumesta was once again awesome on track and just goes from strength to strength. The new (Straight) back axle made a big difference to an already very sorted handling.

So what did we learn from the shake down.

Tyres: The 225/45 are a good size and I think helped with the grip, they were certainly better than the 205 mixtures I took off. They were Dunlop Sport Maxx all round. It was wet but I felt pretty much any other sport pattern would have performed much better. Need to invest in some decent rubber.

Suspension: Standard set up did well but I did notice a lot of body roll. A nice set of stiffer coil overs is definately on the upgrade list. Poly bushes would also be good.

Body flex: I could feel the car twist and flex, especially in the chicanes. Roll cage and strut braces are a must. With the car stripped out it is something you notice.

Engine performance: I was dissappointed. I expected a lot more. That said getting the power down was the biggest problem but more acceleration was definately required. A lightened flywheel has to be on the list as is an LSD.

Finally, the seat.....it has to go. It's not uncomfortable and it is light but it is too wide. I was sliding all over the place in it....

A fair bit of work to do before next track day 2nd March Cadwell Park

Seats made a massive difference at Cadwell this weekend. You actually felt what the car was doing and this really helped learning the limits on a new track to me.

This was the first run on a bone dry track and so for a change no wheel spin and no tail out. The handling really impressed me but performance wise I'm thinking I might have an issue with my VIS motors or the butterflys. There's no chattering but it feels like it should have much more power.

The 127Bhp Pumesta was just as fast down the straights if not a little faster. Yes my son is a better driver and yes he can carry more speed through the corner but in a straight line I should have been catching him and I wasn't. Top speed was 95mph on the start finish straight and down the back straight but he was hitting 110mph.

Anyways, the clutch blew on the back straight, went for the 3rd gear upshift and it wouldn't go into any gear. I can start it in gear and it drives so it must be the spring plate that has collapsed.

Next job, lightened flywheel with replacement uprated clutch and check out those VIS motors. Once the clutch and flywheel is in my mate at Custom Tuning will bang it on the rolling road for me and check the output.

As a side note, the Pumesta also blew its clutch jumping the mountain. As it landed the clutch plate disintegrated with the torque. He can get all gears but no drive

I'm thinking about ripping the VIS out, Ive read on the ZT forum that it gives a bit more power and seeing as I'm in the top end of the rev range all the time it wouldn't make any difference

pete burchill who races has a manifold with vis removed, you will loose some mid range which can be a real help when pulling out of corners.

I would first have a message/chat with pete (car13) and check that things work or can be fixed before gutting it.

the top end of the range is above 5500rpm where you may see 1-2bhp more, but are you always above 5500rpm - even through the bends?

well good news bad news really, Good news, our garage is really busy at the moment, bad news means I haven't had chance to do much to the track car at all.

Managed to get a clutch in the Pumesta but the poor old MG is still waiting.

I've also had a change of heart as to how far I'm taking the BTCC look. Based on the last year I've had with the car I really don't think I will get the time to do everything I wanted so I've made a compromise.

I'm giving a nod to the hotwheels team with some flames on the car but really haven't got time to respray and do a full replica job. I've made a start and have also decided to carbon wrap the bonnet, roof and boot, then add some XPower green to a few bits and fully sponsor the garage. We had a few hits from the track days with the minimal stickers we had already.

In Addition, a couple of companies we deal with have agreed to do a bit of sponsorship in exchange for some graphics on the car, so in essence it will be a unique design rather than a replica.

Rear spolier is under development and manufacture, I'll post some pics when its nearly done, as is a front spoiler. I've started with some of the graphics and wrapped the bonnet so far. Apologies for the pics but as its still awaiting a clutch its on the outside ramp out of the way.

Word of advise, keep a close eye on those camber arm bushes. Infact I wouldnt bother fitting them if they aren't the strengthened type. (Which there probilly not because they were cheap) They will rip straight out. Mine ripped out from normal road driving in a matter of weeks! You can by replacement bushes separately though.

Car came with that bumper, it had been rear ended at some point had a rover 45 rear spoiler when I got it too but for £400 taxed and tested with 60k on the clock its fine for a track slag, its not a show car its all about having fun in it.

They're not the cheap ones, these are exactly the same ones as sold by Motobuild but because I got them from America they are sold a lot cheaper/ They are alll polybushed and of a high quality. They are used for racing so I'm sure they will be good enough for track days.

I'm still here. Really like the vinyl s but just couldnt live with them as a daily driver. Attracted to much attention.

yeah its a love or hate thing with vinyls, it advertises the garage so the more garish it is the better.

Revised my thinking on the inlet manifold, the car is completely different since fitting the cherry bomb, it revs freer and seems to go quicker. I think the old Black Diamond (incorrect) back box was restricting it. Sounds like a big bike now and revs like one too.

passed the MOT - fully road legal now.

emmissions were very good a flew through despite a decat, kept the precat on and both lambdas no mil light and a clean exhaust

developed a problem, occassionally the revs got stuck like it had a rev limiter... plugged it on the computer and it showed VIS balance motor stuck closed.

Going to try it with all the VIS internals ripped out. If that doesnt give good results, I have a ne inlet on standby.

solder them up first, it will cure the problem rather than gutting it which will effect torque which is needed pulling out of corners.
a car is not always faster at 5500 through the corners, sometimes its better balanced and quicker in the next gear at 4k, where you need the vis to work.
each corner is different and a data logger will show you whats best.

well I removed the butterfly from the balance VIS motor but also bought a complete working manifold to compare it with on the rolling road...when I get the chance...

in addition, today I was given...yes FOC given a full set of GAZ coil overs...they are for an Integra but I will be swapping the springs ... got to get these fitted before Silverstone next week.

set of coil overs now fitted and car lowered...its a bit too low though so will have to wind the coils up a bit....the sump os just 3 inches off the floor. drives well though

Defo looks good sitting like that, too low for the track mind you, could see a curb collecting a few part off you.

It was civic coilovers? What springs did you change it for?

I'm missing my track car now. :(

Noobrider

yes it is far too low, these are civic coil overs with the original ZS springs. had an hour or so yesterday afternoon so decided to fit them, didn't have time to set them up properly, will do that next week so I can get all the cambers set up right etc before Silverstone next Sunday.

Basically, we set the coil settings to the lowest setting as the ZS springs were longer and needed a base to start from. The dampers have about 6 inches of thread so I can wind them up a long way.

At the moment the sump is about 3 inches from the floor.

An okay look for the euro boys but not at all practical for track use. It would pay to record all settings in a logbook and log all adjustments one at a time to see the differences. But this would need to be done at the same track, same conditions etc. Easier said then done as we never have the luxury of testing!

if you know what your doing, you can get 95% there then make minor tweaks on track testing.
you will need corner scales and a head for geometry first tho.

well had it on the rolling road last weekend and I was pleased but dissappointed at the same time.

Having removed the balance valve from the plenum, I was pleased with the torque curve, which considering it was done on a power run day with a wide variety of cars on the rollers, the operator commented that this was the run of the day with the best curve and consistency over the two runs.

Dissappointing though that so many horses have escaped despite decatting and inner wing filter...down to 166 bhp (165.9) with 156 ft/lb torque.

there was a definate pick up at 4250 as the power valves opened so I am going to jam oped the power valve and take it back on the rollers to see what effect that has on torque curves

if the torque is at the wheels, that is very good - check tho, it could be fly.

165bhp at the wheels is good also for a car with std cams.

balance usually opens at 2980rpm, so the only losses (assuming all else works) will be below that - on track, you'll never be that low in revs anyway.

Mark S

The figure is calculated at the flywheel on run down from the road. There can be a lot of variables in this and it does all depend on how a rolling road has been set up so I could go to another RR and make more...or less...all depends.

As for sold, it "might be" I took a deposit on it today so we will see if it pans out. I decided to move it on as I was keen to build another track project but couldn't justify having two track cars and needed some extra funding for the new one. In addition, Silverstone left me a bit dissappointed with the car and I've been giving myself a hard time over it. It was clear I didn't know as much as I thought I did and to get the 180 where I want it to be wouldn't be cost effective. So, I put it up for sale, kind of hoping no one would buy it and I could then justify spending a shed load more cash on it and getting it where I wanted it to be...it backfired on me as I have had a lot of interest in it.
