very jealous  that was my next mod after the service and alloy refurb.

jayzs

Well I was gonna wait until it had been serviced etc but thought I would get it all done in one big hit... Belts, service and Flywheel...

The wheels I am going to wait until the summer before I fit them so no need to rush with the refurb...

Cant wait to get it all done tho... btw did you say you fitted a new clutch?

big_wasa
04-11-12, 07:34 PM
Sheddist clutch hydraulics not the actual clutch.

jayzs
04-11-12, 07:38 PM
Ah now I remember... would it be worth replacing the clutch while its all out?

Would i get any improvements if i fitted a racing clutch?

Anyone ever used these?

tbh i doubt you need to do anything other than replace it with an OE spec unit* - you are not increasing the torque so there is no need to alter the type of clutch you have.

i am very wary of most the ebay specials out there that that offer an 'uprated' clutch when it is just a bog standard cheapo one with a fancy painted cover!

* to give some context to this the OE derv's came with 192lbsft from the factory after the 115 ecu update (only 177 before), but we regulary get up 250lbsft out of them before they start to slip. :)

Nice, how does the OE flywheel compare weightwise?

jayzs
04-11-12, 08:44 PM
Erm not totaly sure tbh, think its about half the weight? sure someone will correct me...

Can anyone send me a link to a good clutch to get, may as well replace it at the same time... But there are so many different ones out there??? confused.com

IIRC it's 10kg.

While your mucking about in that part of the engine have you thought about slipping (haha) an LSD in?

jayzs
05-11-12, 08:02 AM
Hmm now theres a thought... where can I get one of them from?

Nobrainer
05-11-12, 08:09 AM
Well funny that, but I have one in the garage :-). Torsen diff from a BRM, still in the gearbox mind.

jayzs
05-11-12, 08:20 AM
Hmmm...how much?

Nobrainer
05-11-12, 10:10 AM
Dont know. Anyone else know how much for a diff?

Saw one go on facebook the other day for £90 posted, however that was very cheap. Most seem to go between £150 - £200 + p&p depending on condition.

Hope that helps!

£150 plus postage then??

I picked up a torsen A a few years ago in a gearbox for £40, it went for nothing when someone helped themselves to it!

I bought my flywheel bolts from QED, weren't that expensive. Clutch assemblies from these people http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk/

I bought a T16 kit, used a low mileage 180 pressure plate as that kit was cheaper for a T16, same clutch plate and bearing.

Thanks for all the info... clutch is now ordered... just waiting for someone to sell me a lsd... ;)

Ok. How do I get a gearbox to you?

ZS

If its just the LSD he's after (the box will have different ratios I think) then it might be cheaper and easier to remove the LSD from the box and post it that way? (the LSD is much smaller than the whole box!)

Just a suggestion :)

It will as the BRM is only a 143bhp VVC, also I think the casing is different.

It does have a different case but I dont have time to strip it.

So will this LSD not fit my 180?

Yes, most deffo :)

You just need to take it out of the BRM box and replace the standard diff in your 180 box with this one...

While you have the box off I recommend cleaning and greasing the clutch actuating arm though!

Nobrainer
05-11-12, 07:42 PM
The LSD will fit. Its what Stamford has in his and I was going to fit in mine but I bought a new car with Quaife already in. Take a look around the sites and decide if you still want it. Rally Matt on .org? or xpower? will fit it for you if you need it.

Sounds good to me... I will take it mate, can you post it tho and how much you want for it?

Cheers

You can have it for £150 + post. Im sure I can sort a courier but Im notoriously lazy :-) Would a gearbox need to go on a pallet or would a cardboard box do?

The cardboard box would have to be strong :) it would be quite heavy! ;)

jayzs

Hmm... prob a pallet mate...not sure tho...

The gear box is 35kg.

The diff can be transfered as they are the same size.

Nobrainer
05-11-12, 08:41 PM
I was thinking of packing it up quite tight, not just floating about loose in the box! I dont have a pallet so I'll have a dig around in the garage and see what I can find. Rest assured, it will be secure/well packed. If I need a pallet I should be able to get one from courier.

As your paying postage, would you like to get a cheap quote? Just tried Paisley and they quoted £70.

I used a plastic crate to send a gearbox.
