What a shame .... £10 with the eastern Europeans would have made all the difference. Bargain hunters get your money out though ...

Firefrost, alcantara, black oak facia inserts - a few hours of elbow grease and that will make a really nice car for someone.
Only thing it's got going against it is it's a saloon! (Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity to claw one back) ;)

Looks a bit grubby and un-loved to me.

Could of at least cleaned it, stuck some new car mats in and hoovered in the interior, would of made all the difference.

Think a few further questions need answered too but doubt they will know (ie. belts)

Personally I would start off with a bid of £500 explaining that the main dealers charge £950 (thats what Seaward MGRover want to charge me) for just the cambelt change and you would have to get that done first as you don't know the history.

Of course if you do or do not get the belts done is up to you... just tell the seller that :)

Oh and you could ask what the reserve is, give you an idea what he is expecting?

Also.. .if there are "very minor dinks in the roof" why are there no pictures of the roof to show how "Minor" they are?

Dan1971
06-12-12, 09:10 AM
I wouldn't worry about dents on the roof .... He says they are small - you'd best check as his small and yours will vary. Dent guy will pull them for £50.

If you can get that for £850 - £1000 a "Steve's clean" would get it looking A1. Then you're looking at a full service. So £1200 ish and your there. Everything else - belts, clutch, plenum, vis motors are just things that play up/need addressing on every 180 ....

It's a nice colour, got alcantara, so go have a butchers ....

Would you buy the car but not do the belts? Doesn't this risk complete engine failure?

I'm Risking it every day with my MK2 180... AFAIK the belts have never been done... Trouble is its so expensive to change the belts on these things when the car is so cheap... some say if their belts go they will just replace the engine, for cheaper than the belt change would cost! (Or buy a new car)

It's a risk but you may be lucky!

Also depends how handy you are, it is possible to change the belts yourself. It's time consuming, and you have to be pretty methodical, but it's possible.

Better spending the £400 and having no worries that buying a new car all the time imo!

I'm afraid I'm one of those guys that gets a car and sells it on soon after ... I've never had a car that needed them doing.

My current one has a receipt for them being done a few years ago, so I'm not gonna do it again. Fact is that you can get a whole replacement engine for £200-£300 but I accept that it would need to get fitted, be off the road, inconvenient blah de blah...

Unless I was on starship mileage or running one of the very first Mk1s that I wanted to keep for ever and ever .... I'd be risking it personally.

When a belt "goes" ...what happens - big bang, or slowly reduced prformance? .... and if big bang, what are the consequences if you're traveling @ 70 mph for example

Bang, no warning, bent/snapped valves, possible hole in the piston.

go on then .... on a 80K car 8YO car .... how likely?

And sudden frozen engine? I.E. possibility of an accident being caused? - unless you dip the clutch of course....

There's just no way of telling I don't think. Could last another 50k, could last 500 mile.

Belt snaps at 70, thats one dead engine.
Friend of mine had a similar issue going uphill in 2nd gear. Cambelt tensioner failed on his VVC, ruined the whole engine. Holes in pistons was one small problem :|

Come on lads, there's nothing like a good game of cambelt Roulette, ive been playing it for the last 3 years. My 180 is 7 Years old with 75000 miles and the original belts.

I have faith she wont let me down :smile1:

You know you shouldn't be saying that!

Mine were overdue when done and the belts were showing signs of ripeness.

It's easy enough to have a quick look at your belts and look for signs of wear or cracks, although this doesn't rule out the belt won't go, it can give you an indication if there's any damage to the belt, from say a knackered tensioner.

AlastairRushforth

I've just replaced 2 heads on my brothers ZT190. Tension pulley started rumbling on his way out of work (long drive way so max of 15mph) and twang....

Result was 6 bent exhaust valves on the rear (bulkhead side) head.

I'm tempted by this car though (depending on size of dents) as my TY mk1 is almost certainly being replaced (not by choice)

Don't think I'm going to bid ..... suspect it will take £1200 to win bid, then at least £1000 to cam belt/roof/door handle/wheels/fogs plus time effort to sort leak .... compare that with Jay's £1200 mk2 sold last week ... everything done .... boy I'm begining to bitterly regret being too slow out of the blocks on that one :(

Door handle? Fogs? Leak?

I see no mention of those faults in the ad.

No worries, I'm getting used to it, it's third one in 3 weeks this has happened on - and I can't find anyone to bid on the one at copart - even for 10% commision, I would quite happily bid £1k (+ commision) - http://www.copart.co.uk/c2/individualLot.html?lotId=28567692&searchType=onSaleNow
