View Full Version : Brands Hatch - taster session - 9th April

Dan1971
07-02-13, 07:31 PM
Booked myself in for another session on the 9th of April with a mate of mine. We're doing the first two sessions - late afternoon/early evening - taking it in turns to drive/passenger in Red.

Be great to see some other ZSs on the day .... Anyone ?

I would love to but for some reason I doubt they will let me once they see the car! Anyway I very much doubt if the zed will be on the road by then. I need to spend a bit of money on it and all the money I have left each month is my holiday spending money.

I would book it up now if I could get there in time but I would only just make it for the last one of the day after finishing work. It's a shame your doug the first 2 sessions as could've had a joint last one out there with the hatches..

peterzs
21-02-13, 10:11 PM
I am, just bought 2 new front tyres!!!

Dan1971
22-02-13, 06:33 AM
New tyres BEFORE Pete .... I'd have been tempted to use up whatever was left on the old ones ....

Yep all booked up and I'll be there, and hopefully with a working set of vis motors to get me back up there in the power band I should be ....

stamford
22-02-13, 07:04 AM
Guys be careful with new road tyres on track, when they get worked hard they overheat and large chunks start peeling off. Scrubbed or part worn are much better.

peterzs
22-02-13, 09:25 AM
Thats why I bought them now, on the last MoT got advisories that both front inner edges were worn. Will be scrubbed in by the time Brands comes round.

I also need a new rear for the Mot, as it had a cut. Asked for a front wheel alignment at the time and the guy said it wasnt worth it as the tyres were shot.

They had lasted well, not worth pushing it till April and hoping they would hang on.

Good to see you.

daytona365

Yes please mate .....

Kev's gonna send down his tester so if you want to leave any more with me, I can test them when it arrives.

If I'm not here - I'm working Saturday - leave it in the alley by the door to the garden mate, or I should be in Sunday.

Its a shmae everyone is doing the earlier sessions as me and a mate are now looking to book up for the late session on the 9th now. Spoken to him and hes quite keen to get his first taste of track action in his cupra.

Will certainly keep you posted. Just got to persuade the mrs its all going to be cheap and get him to take his beloved on thetrack. Hes keen but unsure atm.

Craig-ZS180
08-03-13, 07:39 AM
Been given the all clear to "break my car" by the Mrs as everytime ive taken one of my cars on track something has happened, she now hears Break car rather than Track time.. However do I risk it and then possibly not be able to get the car all nice for the 13th if nothing breaks as I will be working until then and if it goes on track probably wont get a chance to clean the excess crap off of it before longbridge.
Want to but if the car lets me down or I let it down it screws my Longbridge plans up. The track is calling me loudly though :hmmm:

peterzs
08-03-13, 08:59 AM
Decisions, decisions.

I dont go out for any lap records, just to get round and finish in one piece.

Craig-ZS180
08-03-13, 09:32 AM
Wont be going to set reccords but I know id probably push it quite hard once settled into it again. Last time there the car was amazing.

Talking myself into it now lol.

daytona365
08-03-13, 05:25 PM
Just take it smooth, and then we can a picture montage at POL. Park the three of them next to eachother, witht the pics that get taken by the official photographer.........

Craig-ZS180
08-03-13, 05:28 PM
The problem is I won't be able to do the same session as you guys, I'd be on the 7pm taster if I do go as cant get the afternoon off from work atm. Would be pictures of 4 if I could.

daytona365
08-03-13, 05:36 PM
Dont have to have all of us on track, in same photos, as long as pics show the Zeds going round Brands, we can make it look like we all on track together lol. The camera is at approach to Druids and on start of Clark curve....

Better to have gone round than to have smacked it.

Thats what I did first time, just to KNOW I had taken my Zed round my genesis...BRANDS HATCH. To me it was like a football fan walking on their clubs grass.................:clap:

We can park so we can get the track in the background, and/or the pits.....Try and make it look like BTCC from 2000's

Me and Pete can be the Atomic Kitten team cars, as we TY.....:mml:

You sir, made me laugh out loud..! The mrs just gave me the strangest look.

So its the 2 Atomic kittens and 2 Privateers then.. Could make for some interesting pics with track and pits in background.

peterzs
19-03-13, 09:26 PM
Trouble is I have brakes all the time, not just when I want to slow down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But these will be sorted.

I have a cunning plan, get out first. Foot hard down and lay black derv smoke, with the streaming eyes and coughing from those behind I'll be well away !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:):):) :sly::sly: :group::group:

Craig-ZS180
19-03-13, 10:02 PM
I'm sure it'll all be sorted in plenty of time Pete. That'd be funny to see, the derv sooting out the track and others having to drop back a bit. It's not that bad on full chat though is it? My old 200sd was with all the mods, it would fill both lanes of a dual carriageway with very thick black smoke when you really hoofed it :innocent:

peterzs
20-03-13, 09:34 AM
Well..........................................

As you say, really giving it some welly, is interesting.

Can you get black flagged for black smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:oops:

:gathering::gathering::gathering::mml::mml::mml:

Craig-ZS180
20-03-13, 09:49 AM
I dont know about that, I would imagine if it was Really bad they probably would have a word and say can you do anything about it but if its not causing issues for others I dont see why they would do anything.
If it was losing fluid from somewhere then be a different story but for just smoke you should be ok.

peterzs
20-03-13, 09:59 AM
And thats another story..................................

Craig-ZS180
20-03-13, 10:36 AM

daytona365
06-04-13, 10:42 PM
OOOOOOOOOOOH, not long now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What times are people getting there????

Craig-ZS180
06-04-13, 10:51 PM
I unfortunately won't be there until around 6 once I've got out of work and fought my way through the traffic. Hopefully be there a bit before though as would like to see you guys out on track.
Glad I'm not the only one that's starting to get excited lol.

daytona365
06-04-13, 10:59 PM
Thats ok, we will wait for you. Hopefully enough light for a group shot. Doesnt take me long to get home from Brands.........

Craig-ZS180
06-04-13, 11:02 PM
Yeah would be good to get a couple of group shots in, I'm not out on track until 7 as that was the only slot I could make for sure. Still if you do hang around for a bit after your sessions out there it'll give you one zs to watch going round amongst whatever else is there.

peterzs
07-04-13, 07:13 AM
Also gives the M25 time to clear, bit later home going time.

Dan1971
08-04-13, 04:54 PM
Remind me - just the photo part of the licence required or the counterpart too ?

Website just says licence ....

peterzs
08-04-13, 05:03 PM
I'd take both, I only have the pink one, thats how old I am.

Dont forget Helmet, unless you are hiring and arm/legs must be covered up, so no just shorts and vests!!!!!

Disclaimer all signed up ready to hand over, and I take the receipt for the two sessions.

See you up there.

Craig-ZS180
08-04-13, 05:58 PM
Yeah from previous track days id take both parts of licence although I think they only want the photo card if that's the one you have, the receipt of booking so have the booking ref no (just incase issues on system) and the form too although they have loads there to fill out and sign if you forget your own one.
Oh and plenty of petrol tokens too :D

Dan1971
08-04-13, 06:21 PM
Cheers then fellas - see you there.

Should be there 4 ish personally.

And to get our excuses in early - Andy and I have a combined weight of about 31 stone ! Considering the BTCC penalty for a win is about 60Kgs, I'd say we're running with a substantial weight disadvantage !

Craig-ZS180
08-04-13, 07:11 PM
Meant to say possibly a full size spare too just incase you should happen to have an issue on track.

We're talking excuses now are we lol, well my excuse is that at present I haven't been on track since a few additions to the car so will have to feel what it's like round there incase it has unsettled the geometry of the car. If can get it four wheels drifting through paddock hill to the run off area without going into the gravel we should be fine lol.

I'm just looking forward to going out there again for some time where you can enjoy the car for what it is, as long as I'm smiling at the end of it I don't mind how fast or slow I am tomorrow, just looking forward to it.!

You saying that Dan, when I did my last day at brands I was with a mate that races mgs and he was saying where to place the car and so on, didnt really think both of us in the car would make much difference but when I went out on my own for some hotter laps Christ the difference was shocking.

daytona365

Craig-ZS180
09-04-13, 02:19 PM
Maybe not for the more experienced however im still relatively new to the track day driving as only done a few previous days out.
Dont mind controlled sliding but into paddock is another question altogether..

Havent seen anyone crash yet lol.

Dan1971
09-04-13, 07:58 PM
Well - home safe - car went well.

Light rain made it very slippery and there were a few guys on track that were pushing too hard for me to be honest. I was lucky during my stint as I went out at the back and so it took a long time for the faster guys to catch up with me, but when they did, they fairly flew past not paying any attention to the pass on the straights only part of the briefing, so I came in a bit early.

All in all a great little session. Car proved itself to be fast on the straights and safe in the bends at my low speed. Next time I'll hope for dry weather and then I'll maybe push a bit harder.

Lots of spins from some front and rear wheel drive cars, so very glad to get home unscathed.

Great to see you again Pete - Craig - hope it went well mate, sorry we couldn't stay to see you afterwards.

Daytona .... Where were you .... ?

Craig-ZS180
09-04-13, 08:19 PM
It was good to see you guys again, sorry to Pete that didnt get to return the coffee this time but next time you know where to turn mate when you get thirsty :)
That is a good point Dan, where was Daytona? I thought you were going to be there too so hope nothing serious cropped up.

I will second what you said Dan, it was very slippery out there, only had the back step out slightly twice whilst finding its limit but the little twitches were enough in the conditions today.
Yours did look good out there buddy and sounded very nice too.
Unfortunately for me it seems my whiny gearbox has suffered a touch more from going there today, the whine was a little more noticeable on the way home so a replacement may be required in the near future, other than that though what a good few sessions out there even with the dreary weather.

peterzs
09-04-13, 10:37 PM
Well............... went out but wasn't for me, I tiptoed round, MR2 went pass on the straight, then as I went down the hill he was spinning in the middle of the track.

Still was good to meet up with Dan and his mate and Craig.

Did do a couple of laps, but then came in, two cars then spun off and next lap everyone was in.

Think too much of the Yellow Peril to stay out among the fast guys.

All the blue flashing signs were a bit of a give away, still well done to those that could drive in the wet and slippery conditions, way beyond my skills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But next time in the dry.............

Cheers Craig, had the heater on all the way back, did drop into a Harvester, on the road to Woking, just off the M25, for a meal.

Was a good day and wouldnt have missed it, just glad we all got back from the track in one piece.

Hi gang.........heres my story. Got to Brands Hatct at 3.05, drove to the paddock and parked up. Watched the daytime sessions. Looked pretty slippy. Was certainly cold. Freezing my ass off walking up and down pitlane. Then at about 4.30 thought Id better go and sign on at the Mansell centre like it said on the email, get there, no one in sight. Took until 5.00 to find a man in orange to talk to. They told me they had moved the signing on, but as I had missed my briefing,I wouldnt now be allowed on track. Was a bit peeved off to say the least............SO wasnt in the mood to argue, and as I hadnt seen you lot, I thought Id go home..........................

Was so cheesed off that I went to bed almost as soon as I came home, hence the delay In posting on here. I wrote a snotty email to complain, but no reply. However i did get the same email that Dan mentioned, about getting another day for nothing, so will have to arrange another meet. This time I will check at about 3.30 where and when signing on is.......................Sorry I didnt let you know earlier, was looking forward to going round with you lot, but by the look of the tack I didnt miss much anyway.

So did everyone get the email????????????????????

I bet you were a touch annoyed at that then, well I suppose at least it wasn't due to something bad happening if you see what I mean.
It was very wet out there but still managed to have fun.
I didnt get the email but then it may be because I've now done three track days through club msv which they say the tasters are only for people with upto that amount of previous track time.
Depending on how much it all costs to sort the now current issues that have reared from the track time I'm going to try to book a full day at a later point in the year.

Glad your ok though buddy.

The email went out just to those that were on the 5.40 session. After the sighter laps, there was an off and everyone was red flagged and we had to go in. Then after a while we came in anyway, but I think there was another Red flag later in the session.

The email is basically saying that if you're there for the day, you get another go, but as the tasters are on 20 mins, we missed out a fair chunk. I think they are really trying to get more business. They mentioned the reward system of discounts at the driver briefing and now an email inviting us back.

Fairly decent of them.

We did the same Gordon, went to park up behind the pits and a marshal turned us round and the signing on was at the restaurant, Kings.... something, just before you go into the fenced off area.

Thought it was all very shambolic and not as well organised as last time where we had the signing on in the pit area.

Only because we had been round before did we know what to do, first timers didnt get any help.

Think I would have done the same as you, shame but maybe we can use the freebie to arrange another meet up and in the warm and dry, this time!!!!

daytona365
11-04-13, 06:48 PM
Thats what I was thinking, the freebie would make up for the no go...Try bit later in the year, we may get some sun...........................then Dan would be blinded by our yellowness.

Go on Pete, be a shame not to. It was only that sketchy last time because of the very poor weather. I'd be doing it again if I could do another and if I was upto it. Be a good time out again. Keep getting offers come through for last minute booking for the full day Saturday whih keeps tempting me.

peterzs
12-06-13, 08:35 PM
not if we go out with the fast guys like they had out last time!!

Novices I can cope with, but no fun when you get pushed along.

Just dont want to thrash the derv, like I know I would.

Too competetive mate ... just let them past ... :)

I had the track to myself for most of my last session as I was right at the back. Only place to be mate.

I understand though ....

Craig-ZS180
12-06-13, 08:54 PM
That's a fair enough point then Pete, as Dan says if its personal preference because of not wanting to push the car too much and because of the bigger toys that go there then yeah totally a good choice mate.
I get too competitive and its bitten me once when on track, not good.
Last 2 times I've just had to keep a clear head and hold back and remind myself I'm there to just enjoy myself and not end up in the barrier.
Tis hard to keep a level head though when doing that :D

Well survived in one piece. Was worried when I saw the hail storm come down as I approached the blackwall tunnel, but once I got to Brands hatch the sun has come out. The session was good. Learnt from last time where I could go a bit faster, brake later. And as a result actual overtook a TVR, all that power, but no handling. The Zed just clung to the track and I had him........only down side was some absolute scumbag in an excuse of a BMW. (the white thing in the pics), he obvious didnt hear the bit about "no overtaking in braking zones and corners"...Overtook 5 cars going into Surtees and all way round to Clark curve....still as I was getting ready to go home, I notice his bonnet up and fluids coming from underneath...shame.

16-06-13, 01:01 PM
So any plans for a full day for you guys?

peterzs
16-06-13, 01:03 PM
We normally do the £25 taster ones, dont stress the car or the drivers too much!!!

splinter
16-06-13, 01:13 PM
The car and driver only get stressed if the driver takes his brain out before he puts the lid on!!!

Maybe go with the same guys as me? They split you into experience levels so you don't have to worry about the serious boys in their big toys. Take things at your own pace a bit more. Also everyone is in mg of some description so a lot more civilized :-)

peterzs
16-06-13, 01:15 PM
Sounds a good set up, that MG's on Track???

splinter
16-06-13, 01:44 PM
Yes mate. Not necessarily the cheapest but very well run. On their own days it's sessioned, so you get a break as does the car. As you are grouped into primarily experience level you haven't got to worry about being overtaken by faster cars or the more experienced. They are also quite strict on the overtaking by consent/ straights that doesn't always happen on other days!

Done a few with them and got 3 more booked and paid for.

Great fun to be had :-D;

Been meaning to do a MGoT day, but, wnated to get the 3 tasters done first. Bit cheaper, and easy to organise, holiday wise.

I'm a member of MGCC and seen the write ups, I'll have to pop over to Castle Combe next time they have a on track day.

Usually go to the charity cancer ones.
