reasonable guess ..... as I cannot find the receipt .... I reckon 26MPG ... did 215 miles, put £53 in, at 1.46 per litre .....
Sacarily .... 126 of the 215 miles was motorway @ 70 mph ....... so travel to training has just doubled :)

Thats more like 22mpg I would say... (Taken from my fuelly calculations for the last few fillups)

Ah yes, that works out to be roughly 26mpg :) Not bad really! I only get that sort of mpg on longer runs (although saying that... I think I miss-calculated in the first post... lol)

180's should do better at motorway...........He is only ticking over at 60mph. I got around 30mpg+ when I drove to my daughters and back...............

I had about 36-37MPG out of mine on a drive up to Scotland last year.

Generally get about 31MPG on the daily drive, but recently during winter is getting about 27-28MPG.

I get 250 miles to a full tank and I have a very heavy right foot :)

I will say this time and time again

theres no way you should get less than 300 miles (giving it full leaded foot)

I regulary see 350-370 miles per tank

Nope! LoL

Always use Super Unleaded.
Maintained regardless of cost, suppose it just likes me

Saying that at 143k on the blue one you'd think it might complain - just doesn't.
Typhoon at 59k sees better return but its got the BMC CDA filter, De-cat fitting next week (has sports cat on now) and changing from powerflow to janspeed xpower system

Yep. In fact our 260 does better than 26mpg cruising at 60-70

How the hell can you guys get almost 100 miles to a tank MORE with a heavey foot than I can with a feather touch?

If you look at my fuelly graphs (http://www.fuelly.com/driver/thorfin/zs or above) you will see three fillups around 26 - 28mpg and these where travelling non stop constant motorways (with no stop start) from Portsmouth to Plymouth late one evening (to avoid traffic) and then back, thats the only time I've had over 25mpg on this MK2 180.

Mine has only ever a few times got into the mid 30s mpg wise and thats been when ive been cruising it on motorways with like you say Sam no stop starts other than pulling onto and off of the carriageway.
I dont see how anyone can get that much out of a 180 on a daily basis as mine is always looked after and kept running very well and has had things changed that people say would help with the mpg due to better breathing and so on. Atm mine is rounghly doing 24-27 but that is purely round town but when the figures given suggest 20mpg for town and early 30s for combined I dont see how it can be done. If people are doing something different to me to get that sort of economy, let me in the loop as ive tried different fuels and altered driving style but the car does what the car does with little variance.

I managed to claw back a bit of MPG by removing the de-cat and putting a standard cat in its place (I'd rather a sports cat but don't have one or the cash at the moment) - Jury is out on exactly how much MPG, but after the next brim to brim tank I will update, it does seem that the decat makes the car drink quite heavy afterwards though!

For the record, I have an after-market exhaust and an ITG fitted... Those are the only Mods currently.

I did wonder if the tyres I have (budget crappy things) caused some of the MPG issues... but I can't imagine there being more than a 3 or 4 mpg variance between tyre brands?

Decat supposed to increase mpg !

Goodness knows, I have heard mk2 are shocking on fuel consumption though which is strange.

Honest guys, I hardly ever see less than 340 on short trips

Decat supposed to increase mpg !

Thats what ive always heard but starting to disbelieve it now.

I have very similar setup to Sam and have been thinking along the refitting cat lines to see if it makes a difference. Tempted to try just so I know for sure but I would miss the noise.
I suppose tyres do make an impact and I think it wouldve been around the time I changed to the mk2 wheels that it started dipping too. Toyos and cheap nastys on them which are now running Falkens which on the guide give a lower rolling resistance iirc.

I never see that mileage James, 95% of our cars use is round town and we only ever get between 240 - 280 per tank now. Come on, whats your secret :fishing: lol.

ZS
08-03-13, 09:01 AM
I'd be happy with 240 - 280! lol I get 200 - 220 per tank. (By tank I mean I can fit 45litres into it at fill up time, the needle is in the red, but no light yet)

I certainly seem to have better MPG and also more low down torque, although less high revving horse power (all done by feel of the car alone) with putting the standard cat back in...

I'm wondering if the Cambelt needing changing is a cause of the low mpg as well (I figure cambelt stretches over time and as such the timing falls out very slightly, but enough to cause a difference) although not sure on that one??

My 240-270 was a best average , last 2 fill ups were worse at around 220-230 which was a shock.
I run mine to the red every time and it usually costs between 60 - 70 to fill it back up. I dont think mine changed low down when I fitted the decat but christ it revs more freely top end that for certain. Belts not due for 19 months yet but I can see where your coming from. Could all affect slightly.

My average over the last 18 months is 25 mpg.
The best I've ever had was 33mpg, the worst was under 20.

I've found I get better from super than 95 ron and Sainsburys 97 ron gives the best over a long period.

I dont do it scientifically, but I know that when I go to see my daughter in Newcastle Under Lyme, junction 15 M6, its 176 miles from mine to her door. I go up M11, A14 to M6 then M6 to jct 16. Home is usually the reverse, sometimes I do go M6 M1 to A414 so I can fill up at the Tesco on route, (its always cheaper than my local). But if its a early start so no hurry and no traffic queues, I just keep it at 60mph. The Zed is so comfy I dont get bum ache, so no reason to hurry. And same for trip home. So I fill him up at start, and I get back to Harlow with the gauge still just above the min..........Thats easily 350 to a tank.......... Plus changing the route, but almost the same distance, I have gone from home to my fiances in Cardiff and back on a tank..........

Maybe my secret is the YELLOW paint has less DRAG!!

It's just different engines, some come out good from the factory and some don't. I had an engine transplant on one of my zeds, mk2, before I would get 300 if I as lucky worst was 200. Fitted a different engine, and it now gets 400 out of a tank regularly. That is with a decat on and I've fitted a magnet on the fuel line don't know if that does anything. Tyres do have a huge affect tho as I've fitted different tyres and noticed changes before.

Filled up last night and it worked out I had done 257 since last fill up with an average of 24.8mpg.

Best ive ever had from mine was 365 on a gentle run through country and motorways.

Went to Sheff Judo club last night ... round trip 32 miles ... as it was raining and loads of grit on the roads ... took the C1 ..... so cost me 1/2 the price of the Zed, but 1/4 of the fun !!!!!

My first reading from my road trip app came in at 31Mpg
That's even with a good 25mile thrash with my cousins diesel FR-550 and the occasional hard accelerating.
So I reckon with some careful driving I could be averaging a lot higher!

If you run to the red line a lot, when did you last change your fuel filter? I wonder if that is relevant. I still think the engine and journey length are the biggest factors.

In fairness I dont run it to the red line too often just incase it does drag up any crap through the system but I run it close to so the mileage may be different by a couple of miles each time.
Fuel filter was changed only a couple of months ago as can get them cheap so its changed at least once a year.
Journeys definately factor into it but if I now get 310 to a tank im lucky. Last time I got a really good amount out of it was enroute to Blackpool last year.

Magnets attached to a vehicle's fuel line have been claimed to improve fuel economy by aligning fuel molecules, but because motor fuels are non-polar, no such alignment or other magnetic effect on the fuel is possible. When tested, typical magnet devices had no effect on vehicle performance or economy.

I had a magnet on my old zr120 when i bought it,and i did a few runs with it on and off, same speed and distance,i worked it out to be roughly the same. But some people believe they work....Good explanation there zs:smartass:

Have done more reading on these since that post and have decided that it does look like its more of the placebo effect with them than actually being able to do something for real.
Only when you read further into it you realise not all is as made out to be.

Anything that gives you MPG increase as a bolt on for a few quid is probably a scam :)

General rule of thumb, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. lol :smart:

Oh... BTW.... I have a few of these Power enhancer resistors at home I could sell if you want, you will see a slight power increase and better MPG after fitting one, but you must change your fuel filter, air filter and oil\oil filter at the same time and ensure from then on you only use a max of half throttle (if you want better mpg) otherwise you won't see any benefit!:whistle:

(Note, no price as I'm not really selling them its a "homage" to the ebay scams of old... lol :zorro:)
