As title suggests........ coming from the rear. Could this be the fuel pump/sender unit maybe?
If it is, is it an easy one or a pig?

Does it match the engine revs .... ie .... get higher as the revs go up ?

I don't think so Dan, seems pretty steady and I can't hear it at higher speeds but that might just be the road noise drowning it out!

You should hear the pump prime for a few seconds when you switch the ignition on before you start the engine, turn the radio off beforehand.

I also have a noise like this under accelaration quite apparent when driving at 30 to 40 miles an hour any ideas was thinking gearbox related?

Not gearbox noise, it's more like when you hear the fuel pump prime when you switch the ignition on but higher pitched.

Don't suppose you've messed about with the speakers recently ?
