Well, I thought I would create a thread for the work that I have done on my 1996 Rover 414. When I moved back to Malta a year and a half ago I bought this car for 500 Euros and it was a mess to begin with.
The interior was falling apart and had stains everywhere, the trim was cracked in places from constant abuse, the exterior looked horrible with scratches everywhere, side skirts from a Ford Escort that didn’t fit right, and mismatching rims.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0459.jpg

I then found other rims that went with the set and now they all match!

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0463.jpg

The engine was also blown. The 1.4L had the head gasket failure with seized internals as well. The only good thing was that the owner included a 1.7L Turbo diesel Isuzu engine with it. The parts to fix the 1.4 were too expensive here in Malta so we decided to swap in the Isuzu engine. It was a task but it fit nicely.

Once I washed the car and saw the extent of the disaster that I just bought, I got right to work. The first thing we did was replace the rear suspension bushes and shocks. That made the ride more bearable. That's my cousin in the first picture (without him, this would have taken a LOT longer and not been done as cleanly.)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0537.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0538.jpg

Next, once it passed its VRT (MOT equivalent), I got to work on the interior. The first thing was to fit an actual gear shift boot and knob (yes, it didn’t even have those!)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0491.jpg

With the boot and knob:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0744.jpg

Next was to get started on the entertainment system. I brought this radio with me from Canada:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0833.jpg

I didn’t like the fact that there was no armrest, so got that sorted in a jiffy,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0827.jpg

And some seat covers as a temporary solution,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0738.jpg

After all of that work, I started to feel more comfortable in the car and take pride in this purchase because I saw where I could take it. This is how it looked after tidying up the exterior a bit,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0821.jpg

Now onto some mods. I blacked out the grill fin insert,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0981.jpg

Manufactured some hydraulics for the bonnet. No more prop stand for me!

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1258-1.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1265.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1284.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1283.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1279.jpg

Then transferred my HID kit (another thing I brought from Canada) from my Canadian car as well,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0988.jpg

Threw on a bee sting antenna,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0984.jpg

One thing that really bothered me was the fact that the pedals didn’t even match!

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1228.jpg

So I quickly sorted that out,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1229.jpg

So since parts are really a pain to get here and super expensive for these cars when you do find them, I did the next best thing, I bought another one!

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/36569_10151107591270264_1277152883_n.jpg

This had a scrap title because the owner's son didn't want to spend the money to repair the shocks after his father passed away. Got the little 33000km gem for 200 Euro!. From it I replaced the wheel, and a bunch of the broken trim like the long dash piece,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1178.jpg

and the side skirts,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1181.jpg

After that, it was taking up a lot of room in the garage, so I did this to it.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1658.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1657.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1655.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1656.jpg

Then chopped up the rest, keeping the parts that I thought I might use in the future,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1649.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1646.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1632.jpg

All that was left of the poor thing before it went to scrap yard heaven,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1653.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1652.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1660.jpg

Now back to my Black Beauty. Now is when I could start getting a little creative. The first thing to be modified was the amplifier switches. They were on all the time before and then I thought, I don't need the clock anymore! So I fabricated this instead to take the spot,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/311994_10150357013380264_848832031_n.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0833.jpg

The thing in the middle is the microphone for the Bluetooth portion of my radio. One switch for the shelf speakers and the other for the sub underneath. This is what it looks like (the grey patch in the middle is what is covering the shelf speakers,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/379852_10150362467425264_817457423_n.jpg

Added some Freelander side repeaters with LED lights,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/383525_10150798400475264_1609672963_n.jpg

And now came the MAJOR overhaul of the interior. I didn't like the cloth seats and all of the fabric was coming undone from the roof and the doors so I went home and thought of what I could do. After 2 night of mulling it over I came up with this design. The seats were done by a local upholsterer who had a really low price but AMAZING work! He stiffened the seats a bit on the sides for more support, and covered them in the material and added the stitching that I wanted. This is how they turned out,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1611.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1610.jpg

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1814_zpsf9dfea16.jpg

He even did the centre console top and the shifter boot in the same style and material,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1614.jpg

Then I went to work on the rest of it, The interior pillars are all covered in similar material but in the same colour gray as the lower trim all the way around,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1617.jpg

The roof liner, is covered in the same material,

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1615.jpg

And similarly the doors. I got them stitched by another upholsterer but they were put on by myself and my cousin and also front electric windows fitted with homemade wiring looms by us as well,

That is how the car is sitting at the moment. I have a few other mods that I am currently working such as led mods and such. The major projects this year will be however, some exterior body modifications, taking off that sticker, projector housings for the headlights and a fresh coat of paint (the same colour). I will continue to update this post as I go. Hope you guys like!

You have been busy! So what's the Isuzu conversion like? Happy with it?

Seat retrim looks very good and fresh, all the interior work is looking better than factory!

Glad to hear the stickers are going, doesn't suit it imo.

Just realized that I haven't updated this thread in quite a while! Been very busy with teaching and everything but I have been working on little things here and there on the car. Here are a few things that I have done...
I have changed the interior lighting to LED panels. Now lights up brighter than the sun! Also painted it black.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1812_zpsb4e47973.jpg

Changed the shifter knob again to something that feels better.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1813_zps41ad62aa.jpg

Bought some new Rover Puma carpets to put in when the weather gets better

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1806_zps3087b4c8.jpg

Sprayed the rear shelf black and replace the cloth over the rear speakers with black speaker cloth

Yeah the stickers came on it already and never really liked them but not sure what the paint is like underneath so until I am ready to respray, they will stay.

The Isuzu conversion is pretty good. Loving that extra bit of oomf it gets but the clutch hydraulics (which have always been SOOOOOO reliable on these  ) didn't like it, so I fitted the hydraulic system from a Toyota Starlet Glanza which works really well AND can be bled!!!

The interior is probably one of my favourite parts to be honest. It is such a nice place to be now.

We not, saves alot of work and why reinvent the wheel ;)

Good work, looks better with the mk2 alloys, needs lowering a little to set it off.

I'm gonna wait on the lowering until the MK2 kit is fitted because that should lower it a bit in itself. Also can really do much with the lowering because of the roads here and also the extra weight of the lump in the front.

Great stuff - it's nice to see real engineering solutions are still alive.

Don't forget Civic parts may fir (I have civic bonnet lifters on my ZS) and don't forget to keep us updated.

nice little project there - not surprised that the Hydralics went on the clutch part. the 400 ones were more reliable than the later 45/ZS, but still not up to the job when switching from petrol to diesel clamping pressures!

very nice rescue of a car though - a *lot* of work has gone into it!

So a quick update.

The brake issue that I had before was actually the store's problem because they gave me the front discs for a 420D instead of my 414. The only difference was that the hub is 3mm deeper and that made all the difference. They replaced those for me and voila, brakes work well again and no squealing from the front!

In the engine compartment I knew that my boost hoses were starting to crack and would soon split. I took my motto of "Don't replace. Upgrade!" and measured everything up and pieced together an aluminum and silicone set from an eBay seller.

So while waiting for this set, and still driving around, I all of a sudden here vroooooom PFSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Let off the gas, and back on and I here it again. This time, less vroom and almost immediate PFSSSSS. I get home and see this:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1902_zpse77bf879.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1902_zpse77bf879.jpg.html)

I looked at that and thought "I don't think that should be like that!" So then I used one of two of man's best friends. Duct Tape. That gave me this:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1897_zps8f4d18b6.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1897_zps8f4d18b6.jpg.html)

That was last week. This week I received this in the mail:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1895_zps0fef3a10.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1895_zps0fef3a10.jpg.html)

So I put it together, fitted it, and now the engine bay looks nice and shiny(er):

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1899_zps4207e2a3.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1899_zps4207e2a3.jpg.html)

Now this coming week, I book some time at a garage to get a few things done. This includes a new CV boot, inner tie rods for the steering with boots, swap over the top wishbones to get the MG geometry, and also shorten my clutch slave cylinder pin because it is not releasing the clutch enough and letting it slip. Then an alignment and onto the next project!

That is all for now. Will keep updated as soon as I get more done to it!

A much better upgrade, that hose was very old!

Got your moneys worth out of the old boost pipe, like the new set up.

My derv popped the clip off the bottom of the intercooler, OK up to 1500 revs then it would pop it off. Interesting drive into Silverstone, having to stop and push it back on, every so often.

Got a new clip and fixed it, least it was a excuse not to go round the track with all the big Jap boys, was raining and a Trax day.

Yeah, it looks to be really old but held well under the abuse until it kicked the bucket.

Lol...that must have been some trip! Guessing it took a little longer to get there then usual!

I am going to go over all the other pipes soon and see if there are any others that look like they need replacing like coolant hoses and things but I think they are all fine.

Now that the turbo pipes are good though, I can boost with my mind at rest. :D

Left a lot of smoke across the road, thats why I had to stop and push it back on!!!!!!!!!!

I had passed a few on the way up, they then went by, all OK apart from a Range Rover who hooted his little hooter, all the way past. Tosser I reckon.

Or maybe I had just lost my sense of humour. :smile1::smile1::smile1:

Trouble is when it pops you imagine the worse, engine blown up, or something.

that split was impressive!

reminds me of the time before i have the the top pipe outwardly rolled (sorry can't think of the proper term) so that the clamp had something to push against not just slide off...

with the injectors my car was running at the time the smoke was insane when it popped off and I had no boost....

that pipework should outlast anything you throw at it though - as long as it does not rub through anyways :)

Malteser
03-05-13, 02:13 PM
No, it shouldn't rub at all. There is enough clearance all the way around. The smoke behind the car was pretty excessive. Looked like the Pope died with all the black smoke! :D That could be due to the uprated injectors or my heavy foot. But most likely both :D

Well it's been a while since I updated this post but I havent had much time to do much of anything to the car. Just started a new full time job as a computer tech so between that, the part time school teaching, private music students that I have and girlfriend, the car has unfortunately taken a backseat for the moment.

I did however take it for a good clean this week and was surprised at how well the paint still shines on this 17 year old car. This was just after a regular wash and wipe down in which I took about 2 hours cause I worked on both inside and out. Love the reflection on this car!

So, as shown above, I have been working on some custom led lighting for the taillights of the car. Because of teaching, new tech job, personal life and all that fun stuff, I have had to work at it slowly these past few weeks.

But I am pleased to announce that Phase 1 is done!!! Here are the pics:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1937_zps4b98efd3.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1937_zps4b98efd3.jpg.html)

From top to bottom: Brake lights, Signals, Reverse lights

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1938_zps3b9597b9.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1938_zps3b9597b9.jpg.html)

All that soldering...eventually thought I would go cross-eyed!!!

So basically, the turn signals and reverse lights will come on as a full block. The brake lights however will have two stages. When you turn on the side lights or dipped beams, the top row of leds going all the way around and to the bottom will turn on. (it will look something like /----- -----\ . And then when the brake light is pressed, the rest will turn on. Hopefully I can get some pictures of them lit up soon because I can do that and take pictures at the same time because I dont have enough hands!

Let me know what you guys think!

Good stuff veroboard, you have been a busy chap! Are the intentions to use the current lenses? I fear you might have made a rod for your own back here if it works as good as it sounds, people will be pestering you for some! :D

Hey Everyone,

Well keeping in the spirit of not really keeping anything standard on this car, I thought I might as well get started on the body work. So my plan is to fit a full MKII ZS 180 kit to the original Rover body and bumpers. This is gonna be a lot of work fitting it and everything but I think it will come out looking awesome.

So enters Project Playschool!!! ( for reference to what I mean: http://www.goaliestore.com/board/attachments/hot-stove/36283d1337956305-car-experts-playskool-car.jpg . This is because I have some red, a different shade of red, white, grey and yellow parts to piece together onto my black car which will then be sprayed the original Anthracite)

So so far I have the MKI ZS front lip placed and semi bonded to the front bumper, and started working on the driver's side wing by cutting the vent hole and semi fitting the kit part there as well...not bad for 1 hours work I think!

And the pics:

Well been a bit busy but I guess I can update this a bit...lol. The body work that I have done to put on the kit is gonna take a step backwards. I have to take apart everything that I did because I forgot one massive thing. It is best to work with the body panels on the car due to the flex issues of each individual car in order to get them perfect especially since I have to fit the kit to my car. So hopefully gonna start that this week.

The led project is 99% finished. got the lights in the lenses, lenses tinted and installed in the car...just a few small things to tidy up this week and then pics and videos will come up.

Patience...sorry guys :D

Well folks, here is an update!!! WOOHOO!!!! :D

Started taking the Rover apart to fix a few niggles on the front end. This car was involved in a minor front end collision sometime in its lifetime and the front passenger side crush can was dented and never replaced so I replaced both of those with the ones pulled off the white Rover. Also fitted the other horn that was missing so now have the louder horn sound because of the third interval between them. Sounds good now! :D

Then I started fitting the pieces that I had started on and the other pieces that I was going to work with that were from the white Rover.

As you can see from this last picture, the MG ZS lip spoiler was rubbing against the tire so the only way I could keep that from rubbing while I took it to my Uncle's for some work was to put a roll of duct tape between it and the bumper. Unfortunately no picture but I got a lot of stares and my Uncle couldn't stop laughing!

Then when I was taking a few panels out to use them, I found a friend I haven't seen in a while. Now I know why!

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2265_zps21512148.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2265_zps21512148.jpg.html)

Poor thing!...lol...more of a fossil than a reptile now.

Anywho, went to my Uncle's to help me fit the other front fender. I had bought parts of this kit as a lot and the passenger side 180 kit came with the fender attached, and I figured instead of trying to take it off and possibly breaking it, I would just modify the fender to fit. Which it did very nicely. Thanks Uncle Charlie!!!

Also, you might be noticing the taillights. Yes. Those are 95% done. They are tinted, and the leds are fitted and work! I just have to fix one broken connection within one turn signal and another in a brake light but that is the genius behind the leds, If one goes out, the others still flash!!! Also have to put a clear coat on the taillight to give the tinted area that nice factory looking finish.

Here is what the led panels look like when they flash. These are my two test runs before placing them into the taillight assemblies. (Click on them to view the video)

In regards to the battery relocation, I am working on the body work for now to get that done and out of the way, then before I take it to paint, I will be tearing down the engine and doing some engine work and will do the relocation at that time. Have an interesting idea on how to connect everything in the engine bay to look semi stock though and will see if I can get the parts for it to pan out.

For this rear end picture, I was wondering if I should
- try to extend them to the exhaust bit on both ends
- or just to the exhaust bit on the drivers side and the same length on the passenger side
- or just leave them the way they are

What are your thoughts?

Also I finally finished the LED conversion for the dials and got the dials I needed for KM/H and a diesel tach.

Also fitted the boost gauge and just need to run the wiring for the Oil Pressure gauge too and then that is complete as well. :D

Thanks for the comments so far guys! I like how it's coming along as well and for this being the first time for me doing most of this stuff that I have done, I think it is coming along very well. :D

I have just cleaned the excess sealer along the back and I think I will leave it as is. Also I looked at the prices here in Malta for paint vs. powder coating and the difference is huge! Paint would be about 120 Euro and powder coating would come to 275 Euro! I think just on budget restrictions, I'm going with paint.

Will hopefully start rubbing everything down soon and then on to hard metal to flush the kit into the body so when painted, will look as part of the body and not something attached. :D

Well I haven't been able to work in the garage due to family not in the best of health so the car had to take a bit of a back seat for a bit.

Fortunately though, today I had a few hours to give her a go. So I did.

Today I removed all the interior trim and the roof lining, changed the rear hatch, fitted the extreme hatch spoiler, cleaned up a little rust here and there, removed the antenna on top of the roof, removed the washer jets from the roof and bonnet, rerouted the washers from the bonnet to the now new washers attached to the wiper arms.

Next will be body filler around the entire kit, welding shut the holes from the pieces removed today, and changing the pipes for the washers to refresh them a bit and reroute the one for the rear wiper.

Then engine work to replace a bent connecting rod in the engine but at the same time will replace the inner and outer tie rods (will use this as an excuse to uprate some other things that I can in there at the same time :D ), brake servo and master cylinder, battery relocation, new intake system, and rear power windows. Once all the work is done, then I will take it to paint.

So now for some pics. The body will look the same (minus the removed antenna and washers). The colour will stay anthracite I decided and the rims will be resprayed the same colour that they are (silver sparkle I believe). What do you guys think?

Wouldnt white keep it cooler, always taught at school that black absorbes the heat and white reflects.

Will look good when its all sprayed up, whatever colour, silver sparkle is my wheel colour, apart from where they are all bashed up!!!

Hey everyone!

Just realized how long it has been since I have updated this post! Well a lot has changed since this last post so here goes.

After I stripped most of it out from the inside I could get started on the outside. Here is how it was before I started:
http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2321_zpsc443e193.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2321_zpsc443e193.jpg.html)

And now comes the filler. My goal is to fill in where the 180 kit is attached so when painted it will look like one piece and won’t have that bolt on look. I also started filling in the door strips because I would like it to be nice and smooth and I have removed the antenna, rear washer, and windscreen washers.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2322_zpse9044c6f.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2322_zpse9044c6f.jpg.html)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2323_zps29f9885d.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2323_zps29f9885d.jpg.html)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2324_zpse670c214.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2324_zpse670c214.jpg.html)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2325_zps06b65b9c.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2325_zps06b65b9c.jpg.html)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2326_zps91e88084.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2326_zps91e88084.jpg.html)

Then I decided that before I continued on, I should pull out the engine to get at that bent connecting rod.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2709_zps7f7061a7.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2709_zps7f7061a7.jpg.html)

While the engine was out I replaced:
- Bent connecting rod
- Gaskets
- Inner and outer tie rods
- Brake servo
- Master brake cylinder
- Leaking power steering
- Timing belt
- Coolant refresh

Now onto some more progress pictures!!! :D

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2727_zpsf2cf186d.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2727_zpsf2cf186d.jpg.html)

Here you can see that I switched the rims to the old ones again because the 11 spokes are off to be refurbished. I have also closed up the antenna, rear washer and windscreen washer holes and also the roof runners where the rubber strips should be. I also had to cut out all the filler I put on the doors because it just wasn’t coming right with the plastic in there so took that all out and re filled properly on the metal itself.

Now in the back I still have some decision making to do. I am not sure how to put my battery/sub/amps setup. I am relocating the battery to the back to make space for my enclosed intake canister so that will be mounted either in the spare wheel well or on the side. The sub will be in the spot where the battery isn’t and then the amps would be mounted on the sides as well. I don’t want anything mounted to the seats because if I need to move them or lay something on them, I don’t want to have to worry about it.
What do you guys think?

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2856_zps422703f7.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_2856_zps422703f7.jpg.html)

And yes, that is a rear strut brace from the Dark Ice Designs group buy. :D Also have the front one fitted as well!
And these are the final pictures as it stands right now at the painters completely gutted and stripped.

It will be the original Anthracite that it was before. So the engine bay will not need to be striped and painted but mostly because I really like the colour on it.

That makes sense, it's a lot of work to make a colour change look convincing.

excellent work - wish i had the time needed for this sort of project, the expertise, and the weather :D

will look stunning when done I am sure!

not so much of an issue for you, but the wheel well can get rather damp if there are leaks exposed - mostly through the lights on the hatches, so be careful how you do choose to place anything electronic in there 'just in case' or you bring the car to damper climates :)

i'd say amp lower than battery, as i would be more likely to need to access the battery rather than the amp - even if it is just to replace it etc, but that is me!

I have my battery on one side (above the chassis leg as this is the strongest part of the boot), it is boxed in so not obvious. On the other side I have my auto changer (I know, I'm old, ok!).

I have a long thin sub (consists of two 8" speakers in an enclosure with the amp screwed to the back) which fits between the arches and secured to the strut brace.

Well, finally had a chance to go to the painter's and saw the car. WOW!!! The way he refined my work and the progress done so far is amazing! With the paint on, you can't even tell where the car ends and the kit begins. He is doing the final prep before he starts painting and said that it should be done by the end of the month and then all he needs to do are the hood, mirrors, side skirts, spoiler, hatch, and other odds and ends. While he does that I will start putting the interior back into the car and putting it back together.

So anywho, here are the pics!

Well boys and girls, there is progress!!!! I went to the painter's yesterday and I was left without words. It was soooooo nice and I was very impressed!! Basically, it looks like the metal and the kit is all just one piece of metal shaped to be like that originally and it looks amazing!!

So without further ado, here are the pics!!!

So I walk in and this is the first thing I see:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0173_zps9bb2af12.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0173_zps9bb2af12.jpg.html)

Already excited!!! Then I start walking around and see the side of it!!! The tape is from a spot that the sprayer didn't like the outcome of so he re-sanded it, re primed and will respray the entire door again:

And now for some detail shots (Don't mind those white specs, that is dust but that is on there after the painting and will be removed before final clear coats obviously)

That's what I was thinking as well when I was deciding how to put it on. I never really liked that added on look that most kits have so decided to do the extra work and blend it in.

Just ordered a new set of rubber as well. Got a set of Hankook Ventus V12 Evo Tyres

https://www.tyresdirect.com.mt/component/virtuemart/237830-detail?Itemid=0

Read some really good review about them especially in the wet and decided on them since our "winter" here is basically just lots and lots of rain...lol. Can't wait to receive them and put them on the refurbed rims! :D

So went to the painter's today and was almost jumping up and down like a giddy school girl! The work is almost done and it is looking amazing!!! So here are the updated pics.

All he has left to do is now the door handles, wiper stalks, fog surrounds, and mirrors, then I can put it back together again!!! :D :D :D

And funny story. He told me today that 2 guys came in to the shop this week to see their cars (One being a MK1 Escort for HalFar, our local drag strip, and the other being a current Fiesta) and they started saying how nice the Evo looked. :D At the time he had the bumpers on as you see but not the grill showing it is a rover. His buddy then said that's not an Evo, it's a BMW! When he showed them the grill, they were speechless he said!

Love it!!!!

Well ladies and gents, it has been ages since the last update. Between school work and summer holidays where I find more stuff to do than I possibly have the time for, I have now just gotten a chance to continue this write up.

That is not to say that my hands have been idle mind you! :D

So, Back when it was still at the sprayers a long, long time ago in a garage far, far away… (cue the music!!)

I had started putting the car back together again. First things first. Sound deadening!!! I fitted sound deadening to the inside of the door skins and also to the back of the door cards.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0397_zps2cea91a9.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0397_zps2cea91a9.jpg.html)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0396_zps751a2ecc.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0396_zps751a2ecc.jpg.html)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0404_zpsc0649f05.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0404_zpsc0649f05.jpg.html)

This has made a HUGE difference in the quietness of the car during driving and also gives that satisfactory solid THUD when you close the door instead of a clank. :)

Then went in the rest of the interior. Newly upholstered roof by me and then the seats afterwards.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0399_zpsbaa60cac.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0399_zpsbaa60cac.jpg.html)

Then the interior at the back.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0401_zps06ac9b8d.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0401_zps06ac9b8d.jpg.html)

And now, for the big reveal…… drum roll please……

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0407_zps2pxt4h59.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0407_zps2pxt4h59.jpg.html)

Still fresh out of the garage and still with polish all over it but beautiful as anything! :D
And for the fun of it, some more…lol.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0409_zpsdujlfklw.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0409_zpsdujlfklw.jpg.html)

And here is a picture showing the smoothed bonnet and roof. No more window washers, radio antenna, or runners for me!

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0538_zpshhjzseqe.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0538_zpshhjzseqe.jpg.html)

Then came the battery relocation. I put the battery in the boot because I wanted to fit a different enclosed air filter (which I am currently in the process of fitting) but didn’t have enough room. Option? Mod something else!! So ran the battery to the boot, made a box for it and a rudimentary shelf unit for the amps as well.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0601_zpsf4575930.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0601_zpsf4575930.jpg.html)

And yes that stain in the carpet was already there when I bought the car, and no, I never had it tested for STDs and yes, I have recently replaced it. :P

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0602_zps586227ea.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0602_zps586227ea.jpg.html)

Then came the end of the school year. We have a student who is in a wheel chair and since the bus can’t get right up to the entrances everywhere and he can’t go over rough terrain, someone had to go with a car. PICK ME!!! PICK ME!!! And here is a shameless shot of the cars booty in the countryside.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0621_zps6dd20f27.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0621_zps6dd20f27.jpg.html)

Next I decided to change the gauges for boost and oil pressure because I didn’t like having everything black and then those were white, so I bought these gauges and they look perfect, with font lettering and everything!

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0671_zpsa645fdd3.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_0671_zpsa645fdd3.jpg.html)

I know, I need to clean the gauge cluster window. :/

So now I see this when driving:

The last thing I am updating you guys on is the last exterior project that I have in mind right now (other than a light tinting of the windows). Everything basically on the exterior has been modified in some way or another. I mean EVERYTHING! Panels, doors, bonnet, hatch, etc… Except…..

The headlights. Now it is their turn. Remember that HID kit from oh so many moons ago?

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1809_zpsca978b89.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1809_zpsca978b89.jpg.html)

Well now is the time to fit it. First I hooked it up to check the beam pattern and how they work and I must admit, for a Chinese set, they have a very clean cut off line and beam pattern. Since they are Bi-Xenon though, which means they are low and high beams, they will also work as highs and that is where they aren’t the best but I have a solution for that as well. :)

Low beam:

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1001_zpsbaa6345e.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1001_zpsbaa6345e.jpg.html)

Oh and I realised that I made a mistake and ordered for a LHD car when mine is RHD so had to modify the internal shield which worked well.

High beam

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1002_zps2a9f20a5.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1002_zps2a9f20a5.jpg.html)

And my high tech mounting procedure for testing.
http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1003_zps2f6d259a.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1003_zps2f6d259a.jpg.html)

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1005_zps074eaeda.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1005_zps074eaeda.jpg.html)

My t-Shirt on the intercooler and light on that…lol.

Then I took apart the headlights. Thanks to the forum I used to be one for the car I had in Canada (Alermod.com) I figured that these can be de-tangoed by taking out an extra piece of plastic and that they weren’t painted on and I was right. This could go for the ZS and 45s as well for those who want to try. I will do a write up on the HID fitting and de-tangoing in a separate post.
http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1011_zpsc6cd4500.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1011_zpsc6cd4500.jpg.html)

Now with a basic fitting, this is what it would have looked like.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1017_zps2a997c2b.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1017_zps2a997c2b.jpg.html)

But that to me was too plain. Since I knew people in the Aleromod forum have done some headlamp modifications, I asked them about colours and they posted up some great headlight designs and I chose to go with a blackout theme. It ended up like this.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1190_zps0ec3cb67.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1190_zps0ec3cb67.jpg.html)

I could have also painted the high beam bowl as well black but I am actually going to put in the HID set that I had on my Alero and then on the Rover at the beginning in there so my high beams will light up the road ahead of me VERY well (considering I will now have 4 HID beams on high :D :D ) I also asked a local VRT tester (that is the annual safety inspection here in Malta) and he said that if it can be adjusted, then it can be legal. Since I left the adjusters all in there, then they will be legal!

So that is the update for now. I will hopefully soon be fitting the headlamps and then start fitting the air filter and will keep it updated more frequently hopefully.

So what do you guys think so far? Any questions, comments, concerns?

Wow, so I feel like a complete dork after just seeing how long it has been since I last updated this post! A Year ago yesterday!!!

So, here we go for a lengthy update on things as they have gone and what to look forward to!

Since I moved the battery to the trunk of the car, I had to find a way to safely split and get power at the front if needed. So in my own fashion, I looked to another manufacturer for parts! :D I got this distribution box from an EVO as this is a great little bit of kit that they have.

http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac241/Ur7MByh/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1196_zpsukbenq9c.jpg (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/Ur7MByh/media/Rover%20417TD/DSC_1196_zpsukbenq9c.jpg.html)

Now considering I had all of this space here now to play with, I decided to reroute my air filter to get cold air from the wheel well and attached it to an enclosed filter.

Then a little mishap. During the winter here, there is rain and water everywhere! It puts a British rain to shame. Because of this, there are potholes everywhere which you can’t see because they are filled with water. This is one such pothole.

Then another mishap… Was behind a car going to Valletta and an idiot in a Honda Accord comes screaming out of a side street. The car in front brakes, I do as well but it wasn’t in time. Everyone was ok and the guy in front was very cool about it. Minimal damage, but still disheartening.

Then I needed a change. The transplanted engine also got its gearbox in as well. The gearbox was a very robust one and I could hillstart in 3rd but it was a very low range box and with welded shafts, I never felt 100% safe.

Solution? Find another Rover ready for the scrap yard and break it for parts. Here I found a Rover 420 SDi with the PG1 gearbox. Took all the necessary components from it and took it to the garage in August to start work on mating it to the Isuzu engine. This is the donor car.

For this tablet install, I am going to remove the headunit completely and run everything from the tablet. From the tablet, I run to a USB DAC which will then run to the amps to power the speakers. It has GPS, USB ports will be put in, and also a WiFi Hotspot as well.

And if something happens, I might have a spare part or two.

What a busy year.

I used BMW M3 parts for my battery to boot on my mk1 but had to extend the cable so when I did the mk2 I did it from scratch.

I used the same gap in the chassis rail for my induction but I have the filter in the engine bay drawing air through the triangle.

I have the filter in the engine bay as well but didn't have a picture on hand. I might change the setup though now as with the new gearbox, I have a little more front room in the bay so might change the positioning of the intercooler and air filter...We'll just have to see about that...lol

As ever your effort is impressive - puts my 'tinkering' to shame!

I'm putting the battery in the boot as well, but I think our plan is to build an airbox in that space, I've already got my FMIC in the bottom grill, so have the old IC space next to the rad for direct air feed.... just need to make sure it isn't able to suck up too much water....

No tinkering is put to shame. My previous car, Oldsmobile Alero, I tinkered with but that gave me the confidence to go onto the larger projects.

With the 400, there isnt enough space to fit the Intercooler as a front mount unfortunately and the custom radiator I had made for this engine takes up the entire front centre opening. What I thought of doing though is still putting the intercooler in front of the gearbox down low (same height where a front mount would be) and make a plate or something that would direct air into the intercooler.

And yes, watch for water. lol...mine sucked up some previously in the build and bent a piston rod. I twisted mine down and then up so it is still getting cold air from the well but it is higher than the chassis opening to make it even less likely of water going in.

Parcel shelf mod?

AND THE WINNER IS......redzed!!!

that under the parcel shelf that is so rare to find? I've been looking for one since I owned the Rover and have never found one under £120!

Answer, I'm making one! I will see how it turns out, since this is my first time working with fiberglass, and if it turns out well, I might consider making them for others as well. :D

Keep your fingers crossed everyone!

Well - I put tinkering in quotes as I've done substantial engine modifications, but compared to your transplants and the rest it is not in the same league of time/effort :)

I guess the engine you've got takes up more space, as there is space for a single pass FMIC in the bottom grill on the 400, as I used that as the template to get mine fitted actually.... needed to remove the crash bar behind the bumper, and cut some of the slam panel to fit the return pipe back over the top..

A little irrelevant though if you don't have the space due to other mods tho :)

Tbh - If I were you try and get as good quality core as you can, and size is not as critical - might cost you a bit more to get it made up, but thermal efficiency is what you are after - esp in hotter temps than the UK.

mine is not much larger than the OE one, but will drop temps from 120c to 40c with over 26PSI boost in around 25C air temps....

I'll find out how it does on the new turbo in due course - but I'll not be running as high boost I don't think, so initial temps should be lower.

When I tried putting one in, it would have to be a really thin one to fit back there because since my radiator is larger, the aircon radiator and fans had to go there and they are taking up the space. Also I don't have a crash bar there but if I put it behind the bumper area, then it won't get any cold air really. I'll just have to spend some time thinking about it and seeing what the best option is.

Off the top of my head, I was thinking of trying in front of the gearbox, at about the same level as it, and create a type of funnel that would take air from the front/bottom and funnel it through the IC and then it would go through into the engine bay.

Right now that is the best idea coming to mind, but we will see once I go pick it up again today from the exhaust pipe place.

So I picked up my car yesterday and was ready to give it a good go to the exhaust place until I gave it the first bit of juice. I didn't realise that the cut off the mech had to do to the exhaust was right in front of the shifter hole!

I gave it some juice and I couldnt see any more!!! I opened all the windows and the sunroof to air out. :hannibal: My father who was driving in front of me was laughing in his car the entire way. When I asked him why, he said

"Everytime you hit the gas, you looked like a train and the sun roof was the chimney stack!"

Needless to say, I couldnt really test it out. That, plus it was freaking LOUD!!!!!

today I should be picking it up after work and then I will be able to give it a go. :trampoline:

LOL

Have you considered a water cooled charge cooler?

Have you considered a water cooled charge cooler?

What is this wizardry you speak of?

The radiator to cool the ware is easier to locate as the water pipes can be a lot smaller than the air pipes required for an air cooled intercooler.

Wow amazing transformation and job....glad you got rid of those big rims that you had on it first. Was wondering how that 1.7TD engine runs. Are you aware that Rover did a fantastic L series diesel engine ?

That seems interesting. I'll keep that in mind and see if it's feasible or worth it. Thanks!

Thanks mcapachey. Yeah those rims were cheap and with tyres when I first bought the car and I decided to keep them until I found a set of 11 spokes.

The 1.7TD runs great. It's very torquey and I barely use first because second gear is perfect for take offs with still great pulling. I have no complaints at all.

I had looked in to throwing the l series from the last car I broke in there but when I started looking for parts for it (head was cracked) they are like finding hen's teeth here in Malta. So I decided to scrap that idea and stick with the Isuzu. Parts are cheap and abundant so that works perfectly.

So I drove the car properly for the first time yesterday and I LOVE it!!!! It pulls better than before, the gears last longer once in third and I didn't even find a stretch of road good enough to put in 5th gear until late at night and even then, hit 120 and the engine was purring and not madly revving. I can keep the engine at lower revs for day to day driving and when I need to over take, the power seems more readily there. Thank you PG1!!! :D

nice - the PG1 diesel gearset works well for putting the torque in the right places on the L which isn't a hugely wide rev band... I think theoretical tops speed is 130 with the PG1 pending your final RPM.

Based on what you have described I'd also say consider a chargecooler system - it might not be your cup of tea, but you could use a bonnet scoop/hole and place the rad directly under that - space may also be an issue too tho as you don't want this to be directly on top of the engine really either...

They are generally more compact than a suitable FMIC though from what I've researched - although granted not a lot as I knew I could get a decent FMIC on mine in the slot.

I've also still got my AC rad in place on mine.... but this sits underneath it.

I'll have to look at spacing, but I am not considering it though...what type of flow rate are we looking for from the pump though to make it worth it?

Sorry not sure there - When I realised I could use air cooling I didn't go any further.

Water is significantly better for thermal efficiency, so it don't need to be huge I would not have thought

Thanks guys. I'll take a look at some Scooby forums and see what the consensus is then.

It's raining in a monsoon like fashion so haven't had a chance to wash it myself yet. Just done some minor fixes so once the rain stops, I should get some picks up.
