View Full Version : Differences between a ZS 1.6 and 1.8

Apart from the CCs is there any difference? I remember reading somewhere that the suspension on a 1.6 is the same as the Rover and not the MG suspension. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

What other differences are there?

Thanks

Visually no exhaust cut out on the rear bumper for the 1.6. Smaller 15'' wheels.

I have a cutout and 16" wheels, but then I also have a 180 front splitter, all was there when I bought it! Mine is a 2001 1.6 and although the service book and old MOTs say it is a 1.6 I understand they didn't make one in those days.... makes me think I actually have a 1.8

Where is the engine number located, I had a look the other day when I removed my rotten exhaust manifold heat shield, but couldn't see it!

As for suspension all the zs share the same rear shocks and springs irrespective of engine size, for the front suspension the 1.6 & 1.8 use the same shocks and springs.

The 2.5 and diesel also use the same items, none of the springs or shocks are shared with the 45 or 400.

You are quite right, 2001 was when the Zed first appeared and there was no ZS110 in the line up. Probably didn't appear until 2003.

One other thing is 1.6 has rear drum brakes rather than brake disks on the 1.8.

Is the engine number on the V5, if it starts 18K4 you have a 1.8.

Were discs an option on a 1.6 ?.

Don't really know but I don't think so.

Drum brakes also apply to the diesel ZS101 but disk brakes on ZS115.

Hmmmm. I have drums on the back! I'll look at the V5 when I get home! What yesr did the facelift come in? 2004? If so then did they not make the Mk1 in a 1.6 at all?

When I went to ALS they thought it was a Rover 45 impression when I gave them the reg number!

Odd, are you sure it is a zs and not a 45 made over to look like a zed.

R8NMG

The mk2 came in at around middle of 2004. There are 1.6 in mk1 guise as I said earlier think they came in 2003.

Mines a 1.6 entry moddel and drives + handels better than the mk1 1.8 we have in work so I think there isnt much different really

When you check the reg it shows as an MG ZS.

weird one

Yeah, scratch the bit about it being a R45, I've checked the vin on both our zs and the both show up RT which is Rover 400, so you can't tell from the vin if it's a zs or not.

Mine is a 2001 1.6

Your profile says yours is a 2003 1.6. So is it a 2001 or 2003?

If its 2003 then it is a ZS 1.6. The exhaust cut out and 16" wheel can be easily changed. If its a 2001 then it is all abit strange.

Obviously bhp is different but the main difference is in the torque. On the 1.8 max torque is only at 2750rpm so it pulls quickly.

Really depends, towards the end there was a lot of different specs, as said all the 1.6 and 1.8 is the same suspensiin, some are leccy and other are manual windows, some have solid front disca, others have vented, some have rear discs others have drums.

date of first reg.= 13/11/2001
make: mg | model: zs
vin: SARRTXWMB2D551957
Engine no. = 16kfn46431013

There's no way this could be wrong is there?

I did think someone went to a LOT of effort to make a R45 look like an MG, wheels, headlights (why would you?!), bumpers, badges, steering wheel, interior, aerial....?

Is there any way of finding out who the car was first registered to?
Im sure they know what the car is lol

It's a 1.6 mk1 zs.

The curious part is the date of first register in November 2001 whilst the 1.6 was not available until 2003. Could this be a test car of some kind?

petet16

It certainly is an early one, it could be a pre production car.

if you are a member of MGCC and join the Zed part, they have all the build details of the Zeds, just need the Vin via email.

Reckon they can tell everything that was put on it on the line.

Is it really worth the £45 to join?

Well, I could well have been a bit cheeky here as I requested a free 'pack' and there was an opportunity to ask a question about anything MG related on the request page, so I have asked, I guess at worst they'll just say no, but worth a shot

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll update the post if I get more info!

Do the ZS's not have commission numbers on them where as the R45's don't? inside the drivers door i think.

i have a MK2 110 and it has the 17" straights, vented front discs and discs on the rear

Odd one really, yours was registered in Birmingham, it would be interesting to see who the first owner was, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be MGR.

Does that mean it's rarity will make it even more valuable?!
