Just back from the garage with a nice list of failures.
All stupid little things but still a pain!!

An MOT failure? Surely not!

Let's hope it's a cheap fix then.

Both number plates, because they have a honeycomb affect,
Cv joint gater. Bust
Ball joint dust cove bust
1 corroded brake pipe
Couple of ball joint split pins missing.

Oh and handbrake not efficient enough. (14%) I'm sure pass is 16%?

Oh mine has honeycomb too and its been on the car since 2005 purchased from Halfords.

It seems they changed the MOT rules to exclude the older honeycombed effect plates for cars post 2001. I know some manufacturers actually fitted such a plate when sold new, Merc being one I can remember from back then.

Honeycomb plates been been an MOT failure for years, shows that your MOT station doesn't play by the rules....

Ball Joints without splitpins? Thats pretty shocking & dangerous.

Bottom ball joints on mine are reduced hex A1 stainless steel nylock nuts.

Nylocs on ball joints are very common, cheaper and faster for production than split pins

That's not a real failure. A couple of hours will sort it. Let me know how you get on with cv boot. One of mine is starting to crack and I'm after quickest way to do it.

Never seen nyloc nuts on ball joints. Considering scott's were supposed to have splitpins it probably means they were not nylocs?

I know in my trade we dont mix the two

A lot of cars use nylocs instead of split pins, much better in my opinion, not seen one come off unless it wasnt tightened up in the first place. Split pins are really a thing of the past these days

Where would I buy split pins from?

Maxfly

Most motor factors should stock them in varying sizes bud :)

stamford

Yes local motor factors will or buy a kit off ebay or Machine Mart. I have a drawer with various pins in.

Through my previous experience, I use a football drill cone, (with the bottom cut off) cut the old one of and lube up the cone to slip new one on over the cv joint. Avoid removing the joint!! Simples.

The cones work really well with the stretchy boots.

Of you cant find a split pin and have a nyloc then stick that on, the fail will be the fact its not got a locking device, either that or a second nut if it will fit, halfords do a massive box of split pins for about £5 with about a million pins in it
