Very nice mate. You stuck with a lower powered car for a long time and have served your driving apprenticeship.

Do the same with this one - feed the speed in gradually and learn how to handle the huge power difference or you'll get caught out.

Enjoy it pal - but be careful.

Cheers, yeah i am wary of it but i do get to drive plenty of big hp motors at work, all be it not in anger. It is pretty quick, plus no wheelspin just oomph away, it does potter about too luckily, nice amount of torque so you can drive it about off the turbo, sits at 70 at 2500revs.

So thats me had the car a week now, pretty settled in already, zs hasn't turned a wheel all week. Few more things despite not having it up on a ramp yet, it has bistein shocks fitted i.e. RB320 suspension. Also found a receipt for a sports cat and "snake head" downpipe at £420.

Ritchy
05-07-13, 07:38 PM
Very wide but very short, came out pretty easy suprisingly, looks an intresting strip, you leave the pistons in the bores and split the block with the conrods left on the crank. Theres allan bolts on the side of the block which lets you remove the gudgeon pins in position

tcb 180
05-07-13, 07:58 PM
Yes my lads is just back from mot and investigation work. We bought a duff closed deck replacement engine so here we are 6 months later and a total of £2,900 invested in a car that has come home minus engine and boxes full of parts, nuts & bolts. Guess who's about to do his first scooby rebuild?

Get on scooby net fella on there just done a big spec rebuild. Apparently you leave two pistons and rods in one side and remove gudgeon pins from the other two via inspection holes so when you part the blocks two halves, the crank comes out with two attached to their rods and the other two stay in the bores with the rods just dangling.

Be warned, huge costs for gaskets. We got them all in our prices as above and hopefully can sell on the closed deck block.

A while since the last update, to cut a long story short, the guys fucked me over and i've been left to sort it myself. So a few months on and the last bits are being ordered tomorrow:)
What's getting done I hear you ask? Well not messing about, getting new crank, acl bearings, new con rod, cosworth head gaskets, uprated 12mm super duper oil pump, new modine, stainless exhaust manifold and up pipe, new timing belt kit and a few other bits, magnetic sump plug and shiney bits:) pics to follow shortly

Apparently some of the newer scooby engines are reknowned for that fault. That would be just my luck too. Our rebuilders boss pulled the plug on the garage so he was out of work and our engine came back to us for 2nd time in bits. Thankfully, he just set up on his own and I took it all back to him last week for re building.

The standard mani is very good, even better when ported. With these on a standard car the turbo will spool latter.

Ritchy
22-10-13, 08:29 PM
Its the same bore, the old up pipe was a bodge job, plus all the heatshields where rotting off so decided to go for this instead

Skillen
22-10-13, 08:33 PM
If only there were room for this kind of Mani and up pipe on a 180 to turbo :)

tcb 180
23-10-13, 02:52 PM
It will also need remapping after the full mani is fitted or it will run like sh**e. Apparently an up pipe alone is ok but full blown jobbie like yours needs the remap.

Our guy seen today, mains & big ends knackered, crank ok though. We bought Roger Clark uprated oil pump, a sump baffle plate to prevent oil surge. Cosworth bearings going in and a set of new rings. Just bought uprated ecu too so she will be 300bhp at the end.

Ritchy
23-10-13, 07:07 PM
Yeah i'm getting it mapped after its built and ran in, hopefully by andy forrest. Its 300ish at the moment as far as i'm aware but not wanting to go crazy on the mods, if it ends up running crap on the manifold i'll just take it off put the old one back on roger clark wanted 189 for an up pipe plus postage, but prospeed did a manifold and uppipe for £230 including delivery, seemed a bit of a no brainer.
Theres a place in bishop auckland, japanese import car parts, they are considerably cheaper than rcm for the same stuff, got the full gasket kit for more than 100 cheaper(subaru set), really cant fault them, bought my crank from there too.
Considering rebuilding the turbo before I put it back together while its off as well

tcb 180
24-10-13, 07:57 AM
Cracking! Have you got a link to Bishop Auckland website. After an uprated fuel pump at the moment. Roger Clark £100 and one on ebay which supposed to be better for £52 delivered?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251347639109?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

tcb 180
25-10-13, 08:59 AM
Yea or similar. The above ebay link looks very good indeed though.

Ritchy
25-10-13, 11:18 AM
That jap import place seems to be the cheapest place for Subaru parts as far as I have found, for example roger clark had quoted over £400+vat for the engine gasket set, that was at "trade price" yet Bishop Auckland quoted £300ish including vat! Although they where slightly dearer for cosworth gaskets but i forgave them that

Ritchy
04-01-14, 12:01 PM
Quick update for anyone who isn't on Facebook, engine went in over a month ago, seems to be running okay at the moment, but due to poor weather and dark nights I haven't had a chance to stick the last new disc on it and get the MOT done yet, hopefully at some point next week. Shall try sort pictures out as well

Ritchy
04-01-14, 05:35 PM
Kind of keep forgetting about it tbh, yeah looking forward to having it back on the road, still on the back of my mind whether its going to be reliable or not, time will tell. Done everything possible to ensure its running as it should. But still something niggling, hoping its all going to be fine anyway. Keep the MG another month or so as a standby.

Ritchy
24-02-14, 06:40 PM
Welll, back on the road! Still on the bed in, thats 200 miles covered now. Went through the MOT fine with no advises. So a quick oil change this weekend. Then its booked in for a remap off Mr. Forrest on the 9th of April to ensure its running as well as it should be:)

Nice one !

We gave up on our wrx import and sold it for bits. Rolling shell went for £300 so not done too bad. Bought a 2000 uk spec genuine 87k for £1,700.

Just for a tinker about now and then as too expensive for a daily runner.

Ritchy
25-02-14, 05:31 PM
Quite expensive to run but still driveable...19.8mpg on the last tank :/ haha

Ritchy
09-04-14, 11:58 AM
Andy Forrest remap complete:) roughly 357bhp he recons now with the road run, obviosly not a dyno but comparing to equivelant cars. Also activated blip downshifts so the revs match the gearing on the downshifts...makes it a bit smoother/slicker. Could have had launch control activated as well but didn't see the point really

stamford
09-04-14, 12:00 PM

We still enjoying ours and they are alright to work on too. No where near your power but still an awesome car in standard form too.

Once you've driven one it really does impress tbh.

Later 2.5's did have a lot of engine probs I see.

Think the 2.0 is just as prone tbh for bottom end, think perhaps the 2.5 isn't as forgiving for poor mods.

grimmy
10-04-14, 07:01 AM
One of the lads in my work has the 2.5 and its currently in having a rebuild after the bottom end gave up after the oil pump failed.apparently Subaru know about an issue and blame it on bad mods.this car however is standard and has been serviced according to the schedule.

peterzs
10-04-14, 09:32 AM
Before Grimmy posted up, I know of 3 others that have gone from ZS's, all 3 have had engine problems.

Must admit I was tempted, but that put me off, plus the ones I could afford, around £5.000, all looked dogs!!!

Tbh when you start pushing over 100 hp per litre, if you don't maintain it properly or don't let it get up to temp you can't be surprised if it goes wrong

tcb 180
11-04-14, 06:03 AM
Go for it Pete. We picked up 87k well presented one for £1,700 last of the classic shape when all little niggles had been pretty much sorted. Lad and I share costs, park it on mother in laws drive and go for a spin most weekends or I take it to work for my 3 days.

Lovely car for so little and brilliant drive.

Ritchy
11-04-14, 05:48 PM
A fairly standard wrx should be more reliable than an sti. All depends on the car and what mods ect it has

peterzs

Wee update, nothing much has changed, up to 3800 miles since the rebuild and it's 4th oil change, running fuchs 15/50 ester synthetic oil in it now, seems to be doing the job so far anyway, sorted an annoying manifold blow and boost is much better now, properly fun car to drive, very good in the bends, suited to roads up here, zs felt a bit like it was on edge into some bends, but this even at 30 mph faster is still sticking like glue, never had anything that has felt like it on the roads, few niggles are the brakes still have a bit of a judder when they get hot, thinking either another disc has warped or the flange isn't quite right, and the rear shockers still knock at low speed, shall sort these at some point but just enjoying it as is at the koment, just about to go a trip up north with some steak pies on the turbo so touch wood we are okay

talkingcars
12-07-14, 10:33 AM
That's good news but you be careful on those 30mph faster bends, 4x4 sticks better but gives less warning (like none) before it lets go. When I worked for the local VAG dealer our sales director's brother in law rolled his S8 when it let go with no warning, smashed every window in the car and a salesman at the branch that sold imported scobbies and evos lost it, we don't know if he had any warning as he didn't survive to tell the tale but we do know the tree won.

Be careful out there.

Ritchy
12-07-14, 10:44 AM
Tbh it's not really getting driven in anger that much, although I had broke up with my missus last week and for anyone that knows the stockymuir....It was rather torn up after that, quite enjoy just cruising about in it, good on motorways with the torque,

Dan1971
12-07-14, 10:45 AM
Rule for bends -

If the vanishing point (the point where the nearside and offside kerbs meet) isn't moving, it's sharp. When the vanishing point is moving away from you as fast as you are moving, you're at the right speed.

All good. Enjoy, but be careful mate.

Maxfly
12-07-14, 03:15 PM
Glad your enjoying the scoob bud, cars wouldn't be our own cars if there was t a niggle somewhere we want to sort haha! Sorry to hear about you and your missus, all the best for the future.
