Collected from York today. Bought blind from the bay of E.

I've had a right result I tell you.

Bodywork is really good. Bit of a saggy bumper but I've seen a lot worse. Alloys are a bit marked. The guy's glued the handle on the rear driver side - :wall: and left some residue around it. Interior is mint. Factory stereo etc and looks standard under the bonnet. What's not standard though is the stainless exhaust. I've got no bills with the car, just the service book, so I'll try to contact the previous owner about where it came from, make etc and what else has been done to her over the last keeper's 7 years of ownership. I think it's got something else going on under the car as the sound is amazing and it's not like there's a hole anywhere.

Serviced in May, years MOT on it and 4 new avons.

Drove fantastic back down today - steering wheel dead centre, no vibration, brakes good, all electrics including the sensors and sunroof all good.

Dodgy badge on the front -

But got that sorted with a new one I bought as a spare at Duxford the other week.

Few bits today - Took the Kenwood out of Red to get put into this one, but I'll get the audio man to fit it and I'll have to get another DAB aerial. Changed the glovebox and armrest over from Red. Glovebox is "flocked" and the armrest is mint, but the silver one's glovebox was just all plastic and the armrest had a wee cut in the leather. Also changed the power vis motor - only coz I knew the one in Red was a good one. Seems even better now. Will do the balance one tomorrow as I've got a spare in the garage. Removed the Halfords V6 badge from the boot but it's left a lot of gluey residue that I'll get stuck into tomorrow, and if that doesn't come off I see another badge of some description covering it up ... :hmm: Also ordered some new rear quarter badges as they're faded badly.

Gonna get under it and have a butchers at the exhaust in a mo....

wd40 is good for removing the badge residue, another place worth checking for rust is the front jacking points.

Yep its a piper exhaust Dan, will be sounding wry similar to mine now. Its identical to mine barring the rear obviously but still the slash cut in usual way. They don't badge their exhausts up for some reason, most tend to but all the pipers I've ever had have all been plain boxes and pipe work.
Do sound awesome though dont they.!!

Very nice car and it has a SUNROOF!!! Like the interior to. Lets have an under bonnet shot to or is that to dirty to show? My fuel tank looks just as rusty, a result of project drive MG-rover not Stone chip coating them. Plus maybe the extra noise is some of the sound deadening they stopped fitting to. Though according to Colin Chapman he would describe it as "Simplify, then add lightness"

It's spotless and standard under there actually - apart from a Halfords battery, but figured that no-one would be interested in a standard engine shot. Tomorrow .... ;)

Very nice Dan, love that seats!! Definately looks like a piper to me too. Tcut should work fine on the headlights, you do get a specialist polish for plastics like headlights etc but have never used it so can't comment on how good it is. Have also heard of folk using a fine wet and dry to sort things like that but not sure how easy it would be to fubar things:)

Dan1971
03-08-13, 07:31 PM
Wrote to the previous keeper and got an email reply today.

Traded it in as the guy retired and wanted something more frugal. Garaged and wanted for nothing in their 8 years of ownership. Never had any issues. He's gonna have a hunt around for some receipts etc but not looking promising.

It's a piper ....... CAT back and he reckons at the time he was advised that the CAT was on it's way out so he bought a new one 2 years ago that he still has in the shed that he's offerred to me. Now I've not heard of issues - so I'm more inclined to think he's been had over - but is it worth having a spare new CAT ?

POMPSKI
03-08-13, 07:36 PM
Piper.... Billy bonus there.

Glad that you seem to have lucked out mate, Id take the cat in a heartbeat if he is offering it (for free?). Even if you were to then sell it for £100.

On the other hand of course the car may sound so good because of a hole in the cat :D

Got the Kenwood DAB in there today from Red. Reminder - Rear aux in to operate the ipod from the head unit whilst keeping it hidden in the glovebox, digital radio and bluetooth. All good.

Gutted about a little speaker project I had though ..... Bought some 165 speakers out of an Audi TT - Bose system with tweeters included - but the guy today reckoned they were fubarred and regardless, the fittings were different too. :wall: Luckily though the seller will take them back minus the postage costs.

Probably going to get a wee sub in the boot to be fair, (I really don't need it as much as I used to), after getting some advice and a demo from the guy today ... Does £130 for a small but decent sub seem fair ? ... I really have no idea on ICE ....

Again, no expert on ICE, but I reckon a smaller sub would give a crisper bass. Maybe not as booming but certainly sharper which is what I wanted.

I was gonna go for two 8inch alpine subs.
Thought alpines all round would complement each other.

Sound deaden the door skins inner and outer though, makes it sound so much better! I'm gutted I didn't think of doing the rear outer skins now!

Really depends what you want.

I fitted an Kenwood active under seat amp in the F which gives a good depth to the sound, cost £108 from ebay and all it needs is a power supply, feed from the head unit and a switch signal lead from the headunit.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=kenwood+active+sub&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=KSC-SW01&_sacat=0

If you need a lot of bass you'd be better going for a boot mounted one with a separate amp and they start costing a lot more and using boot space.

I know it's not the done thing to have O/E speakers in ones car but I refitted them in the mk2 and get much more depth than the infinitie components that were fitted. (I do have a sub box with 8" subs and a 400 watt amp that will be going in once the strut brace is in).

talkingcars
15-08-13, 07:01 PM
Smaller sub acts faster but gives less depth than a bigger one.

Skillen

Smaller sub acts faster but gives less depth than a bigger one.

It'll be deep enough I reckon with two.
And the standard ones do give more depth in the fronts but I prefer good mids on the front.
And then fill in from my two ways in the rear and the depth from the subs when I get them.
So much buying going on at the minute though the subs can wait.

What make and size was the sub Dan, a small sub doesn't mean it'll be bad but there are certain makes that I probably wouldn't touch.
One that I thought wouldve been bad but I have actually ended up with one as a back up whilst my 15" is out of action is an Edge 12" active enclosure. Not something I would usually go for but as it is a side decision of Vibe (gets better right ups though) I thought may be worth a try. Not bad for £100 boxed with amp built in.
I used to have 2 12"s then 2 15"a which really shook the s##t out of the car and the house 6 doors down but with the kids it was a but too much.

Anyway, find out the name and size and should be able to say if it'll do what you want. :)

Pretty chuffed really. I've not been hanging about - some sharp acceleration up to 60-70, and cruising at 75-80 on the M'way to work and over the last 256 miles - 29.09mpg.

I have a vibe black air (I think it's called) sub in my car, it came with the car when I brought it. It is rather large and does take up a fair bit of the boot space, so when I finally upgrade my ice system I will be looking to get a smaller more fitted sub in the back of my Zed. I would not want to compromise on the sound quality though. They make a hell of a difference would much rather have one than not have one.

That looks like a 12" from the picture. Vibes and their counterpart names are usually a good option for an all in one package without the need to then go buying amps too.

Well it really depends if you like to feel the music that's playing too. I have always loved how it sounds and feels through the car when you get a tune with a good background bassline that you can feel through everything. Steeringwheels, pedals, seats.. If its set up nicely it can sound amazing and with certain types of live concert music ( if that's your thing) can almost sound like your there listening to it live.
Good wiring, speakers and amps along with a good head unit will totally transform the audio pleasure from the car.
There's sounding good and sounding great.
Plus just because you have a big sub and uprated ice throughout the car it doesn't mean you always have to let your neighbours and other cars on the same road know what your listening too.

Is a very nice example of a ZS. In Photoshop the black looks to matt and no colour in the centre or wheel nuts is making them look flatter. If you did them in gloss you would get some highlights on the spokes also Red callipers could help set them off and keep the theme.

I'm even thinking about getting the belts done .... and I never thought I'd do that .... :)

The only thing that worries me with doing that, is that right now - it's running absolutely perfectly and I'm concerned that whereever I take it to get it done - they'd feck it up ....

I think I've found balance. The Mrs loves the BM. I really like the BM so when I go out with the Mrs and the boys I'm still driving a cool car that I like - looks good, goes well and they are all happy - and the ZS is absolutely spot on right now.

In fact I'm like .... what next ?

Interior is now absolutely as I'd want it - apart from a steering wheel - want a 45 one again - have one in the shed and gonna probably get it re trimmed ... ££££££. Exterior is nearly bang on. Got a spare set of headlights to go in at some point - maybe tomorrow morning depending on the weather - but after that it might just be time to enjoy it !!!

Not keen to be honest on a TF wheel - like I mentioned, I have a 45 wheel that I might send off to a re-trimmer. Would make it unique and special - but also expensive.

Is the leather handbrake etc a straight fit out of a TF ?

Ordered some service items and thought I'd change the pollen filter too - good decision - 1st time I reckon. The filter started off white !

Having read up on it, it may contribute to your fans not delivering as much air so taking longer to demist etc, the quality of that air being poor, and puts additional stress on your motor as being clogged up the air doesn't go through as easily. Not sure how true all that is to be honest, looking at the state of mine though, I don't doubt it. Got to be worth the £14 genuine OE MG/Rover replacement.

Beware of the £5 copies on ebay though - they don't fit .... :slap:

Unfortunately half the crud from the filter fell in it when I pulled it out ... it was off for a refill when I took the pic ...

Took advantage of the good weather and went to see my mate to do paint the brake calipers.

They were all kinda like this before -

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii58/danlaualex/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODMuanBn_zpse9503743.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/user/danlaualex/media/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODMuanBn_zpse9503743.jpg.html)

And now like this - black brushed on caliper paint and ebay decals -

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii58/danlaualex/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODguanBn_zpsb5d1412c.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/user/danlaualex/media/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODguanBn_zpsb5d1412c.jpg.html)

Not all easy peasy though - found this on the front driver side - :yikes:

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii58/danlaualex/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODYuanBn_zps24d1fffe.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/user/danlaualex/media/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODYuanBn_zps24d1fffe.jpg.html)

But - a phone call to a local motor factor got the replacement for £7 - and after some thumping around - all good

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii58/danlaualex/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODcuanBn_zpsc1745a24.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/user/danlaualex/media/Mobile%20Uploads/utf-8BSU1BRzAyODcuanBn_zpsc1745a24.jpg.html)

Nah mate - brakes stayed on there - just took the wheels off and just painted the surface after a good wire brushing. I'd have rather stripped them down and changed the discs and pads but they are fine and it would've been unnecessary.

We had also planned to do some servicing - oil change and the plugs - but when we found the gaitor was fubarred, fixing that took priority and what time we had.

Got all the inside leather and red stitching gaitors through yesterday and gonna have a go at putting it all in today. But - Got the image through for the steering wheel re-trim before I paid up as he sent me through a message saying all done and time to pay.

Looks pretty good I reckon - Should be here tomorrow.

Wow, love the result ! Very nice details, as someone said once on another thread :
only the best cars have Red alcantara .... ;)

I was considering doing the same in mine. I like the thumbrests of the R45 steering wheel but I do much prefer the stripped part of the MG one, between the alloy and the airbag, where the buttons for horn sit.

I store for a long time a pic of a Dutch I think, who did nice interior mods to its ZS.

No posts on the cost yet mate.

The gaitor trim bits were £35 delivered. I've also got one for the handbrake too, although to be honest, very little of the handbrake gaitor shows, so may leave it.

The steering wheel re-trim cost £120 - so far from cheap. The way I looked at it though - it's actually the only bit of the car that you're in constant touch with - and - I had a bit of chrimbo and birthday money to burn.

I need to have a think though pal and a chat with SWMBO. I'd have gone from not thinking about selling, bragging about how well it goes and looks, to selling it on in an afternoon !

It'd also need me to look at my finances to see if I could push it to a ZT V8, which to be honest, is all I'd come out of this for.
