So I was thinking, instead of the solid traffic purple in the first link to paint there, that I should paint it a metallic "Cadbury's purple"

Would one 400ml rattle can do?
Or one each?

Do I need a lacquer layer? And will that need heat treating?
So many things to think about.

Did you refurb yours with a full kit like the one I posted Pete?

petet16
02-09-13, 12:11 PM
One 400ml can should be plenty enough, lacquering them would help to protect the paint finish.

I bought the full kit of seals, but the calipers turned out to be good enough to use, they just needed a bit of a clean up.

petet16
02-09-13, 12:17 PM
Something else worth checking are the stainless shims that the ends of the pads run on, corrosion build up underneath them and pinches the pads, which causes brake judder, and the inner pad can stick, the giveaway is the inner face of the disc being un wiped, it's worth keeping an eye on it when you have them fitted and in use.

petet16
02-09-13, 12:27 PM
Something like this perhaps http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clear-Engine-Caliper-Lacquer-Heat-Resistant-Paint-400-/290584691233?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Car_Care_Cleani ng&hash=item43a8328221

Looks good that l'll get some ordered along with the paint.

The shims I've heard are a bit dodgy at times.
I'll try and clean it up as best I can.

That pack comes with shims and bleed nipples and the rest and tbh the ones on these look worse for wear so ill order it all I think.

Might be easier with the caliper split :/

Should I be able to push the pistons back into the bodies by hand? They seem really stiff!

Can't wait to get these on!

Gonna take my time and do it as well as I can!

petet16
02-09-13, 01:04 PM
No, you wont be able to push them by hand.

Skillen

No, you wont be able to push them by hand.

Ha! Here I was trying to!
That's good to know, I've never done anything brake related before so this may end up being a swift learning curve!

I read the refurb thread and it doesn't seem like I'll need any special equipment so ill be starting these tonight!

Skillen

First calliper split :)

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh142/cskil/photo_zps2fde8580.jpg

The connecting bolts were damn tight!

I managed to push the pistons by hand :/ and got the brake fluid out, now I can't get the pistons out enough to take them out.

I'm in two minds wether to do the full calliper refurb to include the pistons now.
If I can get the piston out I'll do it.

Should the copper pipe be bent specially for a new one? Or just do it by hand?

Thinking of just clear coating the copper too as it will look cool against the purple!

petet16
04-09-13, 04:17 PM
Just bend the Copper pipe by hand, it's only a gentle curve, so will go no problem.

It is very easy to kink the copper pipe so either spend lots of money on a pipe bender or bend it around a tin of beans or jam jar or drain pipe or something similar.

We've got a pipe bender for thick plumbing copper pipe!
I'll try the baked bean method instead!
The pipe I took off was kinked a little itself.

04-09-13, 04:50 PM
I did get one for small bore pipe but it's just as easy on a tin.

petet16
04-09-13, 05:11 PM
If you're worried about it kinking you can get pipe bending springs which fit inside the pipe.

Words of wisdom about the pistons, compressed air will get them out, it would have been easier to do them before splitting the caliper.

I didn't know you could get small bore springs but -

Set of 5 spring benders for 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8" O.D. tubing.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SET-OF-5-TUBE-BENDING-SPRINGS-/310139039962?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4835ba30da

Personally I don't get on with springs, I make the bend to tight and get the spring trapped

petet16
04-09-13, 06:14 PM
Yep, trapped spring, not annoying in the slightest :wall:

There are a few other methods of stopping the pipe kinking, you can pack it with sand, works well but needs 110% cleaning out afterwards.

I'll just give it a go!
I've managed to get both split now, and one half has no shim and one won't give up its torx bits, so I am now sitting with a hack saw so I can get my bit punch rotaty majig into it so it'll shock it free with a 1/8th turn.
Stupid torx.

Skillen
04-09-13, 07:27 PM
Ugh, that didn't work and now I'm stuck with two halves of a caliper (or one depending on your outlook) with the torx screws stuck in and the metal shims, with dirt and corrosion, stuck.

I'm at a loss as to how to get them out now.

I'm beggining to wish I hadn't bothered now!
But tbh I'd rather have fully refurbished brakes that I can be confident will last than just the cosmetic spruce up with squeeling and seizing.

Sorry, but for the money they charge new for those, that is one ***** design failure.
Was dreading changing the front disc back plates on the merc the other day. But what a dawdle. Good thick meaty solid little bolts.

You think those calipers are big. Got close up with a new Range Rover Sport the other week. They are massive.

petet16
05-09-13, 08:42 AM
Those bolts always strip or snap, you'll need to drill down the middle and try to extract it, when I did mine I drilled it out, re-tapped the hole and fitted a helicoil, then used a stainless bolt with copper grease.

I'm really not that steady with a drill, I tried it on my bonnet and kept going off centre.
Man this is going to pot quickly haha!

The ones that I managed to get out were thread locked, do they not need to be?

Skillen
05-09-13, 10:32 AM
Emailed a local engineering company who specialise in injector extraction but listed bolt extraction on their yell page.
Hopefully it can be done and picked up within a day at work as its about 5mins from my workplace.

Better than me ruining things!

petet16
05-09-13, 11:13 AM
I didn't manage to remove any of mine so don't know if they were thread locked or not, I would use a star washer instead of thread lock to stop them coming loose although mine haven't come loose yet.

Skillen
05-09-13, 11:38 AM
Where did you get you thinner nuts from to stop catching when lowered pete?
Was it the castellated nuts that you got reduced?

I'll try the star washer I think.
Clean the shims up and I'll reuse them as for £10 cheaper I can get the refurb kit without shims!

petet16
05-09-13, 11:42 AM
They were reduced hex Nyloc nuts, I might have some left over, but I'll find a link in case I haven't got any.

petet16

None left over, here's a link http://www.stainlessautomotivefastenings.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21_22&products_id=1576
