So this is my clown car that I picked up last Thursday....

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/MG%20ZS/3e75905b4c2fd7e92487f877baf0c839_zps81648000.jpg

Thought I'd start a thread to document how she progresses.

Initial thoughts, I love the mk2 ZS and this really did fit the bill of what I wanted, low-ish mileage on 62k, 1.6 so cheap to run and I didn't pay a lot for it at all. However the bad points...

- lashings of purple
- speakers almost all blown
- sloppy gearstick
- Fly eyed headlights
- headlights misty, scratched and melted
- HID kit
- LOUD Duplex exhuast
- suspension has been 'played with'
- heaters don't blow hot
- Big scratch on boot
- Broken rear door handles

So a few niggles to fix. I've already de-stickered it, de-wind deflectored it, de-HID'd it, fixed one of the rear handles as it came with a replacement (although it was a Honda item which is a different shape internally) and have the following goodies coming in the post and bought...

Dark Ice sloppy gearstick bush, new heater resistor, new headlights, new interior light, black mesh, spray paint for purple bits, new headlight bulbs.

I aim to make her a bit more subtle so probably going to remove the rear wing, unsure whether to keep or just sell, remove the duplex and fit something a bit quieter and single pipe. Want to fit some coilovers and eventually will fit my ITB's, Emerald and some vvc exhaust cams in a year or so's time.

So i'll keep you all updated with pics as and when i take them! :mml:

Not a bad base to start from, not liking the purple much but the wheels seem to look okay. Plenty of things on the 'to do list'.

adam
09-12-13, 01:05 PM
Yup, lots to do but it gives me something to tinker with which is great. I've missed tinkering with my car and when I had the BRM you couldn't tinker too much without losing the BRM-ness of it. So this is a perfect canvass :D

Yeah I've heard that he owned it. It does drive nicely apart from the sloppy gearstick, knocking from suspension and rubbish tyres, lol. I don't exactly trust it in a corner at the moment which is why I'm looking for some coilovers and possibly fitting some of my BRM wheels which have decent rubber on.

Are you sure the suspension has been messed with?
Looks about standard from here.
If you measure the distance from centre of the hub to the arch we can compare.

I'd keep the boot spoiler, without it you car will just look like a MGed Rover 45.

adam

Suspension has definitely been played with, it knocks over every bump on the road and has some weird handling characteristics in corners. I've no faith in it tbh, hence looking for some coilovers.

Brand new suspension on ebay at a decent price -

The seller is South Lakes Minis who are better than Rimmers IMHO.

I bought it from a chap in Grantham for £950, bit of a bargain even with the niggles.

Was being advertised using the same pics, but owner in Lincs ... He had it up for £1000, so either there's something wrong with it, or the purple was simply too much for him !

Yup, that's the chap from Grantham. His missus bought it and decided it was too slow, with them moving house too he needed to sell quick. As I've said there's a fair few niggles but nothing that can't be sorted with a bit of time and effort.

Interesting problem this morning, I pushed the button to lower the window about 3" which was fine then it wouldn't go back up. Just had the doorcard off and it's all fine now.

Don't you just love MG-Rovers! :D

Randomness, love it, I used the wash wipe this morning, normally you get 5 wipes + 1 after an interval, the wipers wouldn't stop until I switched the ignition off, opened and closed the drivers door.

Love it! :bounce:

That just reminded me as well, I lifted my wiper away from the windscreen this morning to scrap off the condensation and the blade fell to pieces. Another niggle to fix!

On the plus side bits have started arriving at home to start fixing and tinkering with her and I've managed to knock £70 off the price of some brand new KW V1 coilovers, whoop!

So it looks as though my tinkering with the door card today has done something to the interior handle as I had to exit through the passenger side door tonight, haha! Another job for me to look at.

In better news some replacement headlight goodness arrived...

Second hand, need a bit of cleaning and probably some polishing to brighten up a bit more but they're a million times better than the melted things that are currently on there.

I think possibly so, it's done the wiper thing twice, and each time the horn has sounded when locking the car beforehand.

I've just jury rigged the drivers inside door handle now, looks like the previous owner has broken all clips on the handle!!

Bad! All marked where the fly-eye stuff had been on for too long and also the HID's have melted the outer lens creating a nice white patch and the plastic is rippled if you run your hand over it.

Adam the washers are due to the pump having all the power of an asthmatic hamster. Some have changed for a ford focus pump others have a pump for each nozzle. The windows is due to the rubbers needing some lubrication:)

Ah, cheers matey! Good info there, looks like I'll be upgrading the pump in that case.

petet16
14-12-13, 11:36 AM
For the washers it may be worth fitting a one way valve between the pump and nozzles, it improved mine with a standard pump, but I eventually swapped the standard pump for a better one.

I'd make sure that the hoses are all clear before messing with pumps etc.
I still have the standard pump, anything more powerful would be too much.

I got them form K300 the main KW dealer in the UK. They were listed for a lot more than I paid for them :happy2:

what brand are they? do you know what the spring rates are?

KW, they don't have a set spring rate as they're progressive rather than linear.

sorry you miss understood me when I said what are the listed for I don't mean price...
I mean what vehicle..

Just checked there site they don't list them for the ZS only the ZR ?????

adam
18-12-13, 05:00 PM
Ah right, yeah I misunderstood.

I went for the Honda Civic versions for the MA/MB with the fork mounting. They have the same rear weight as the zs but the front weight is higher, shouldn't be a problem with the progressive springs though. I'll let you know once they're on!

I'd probably just machine up a spacer to take up the slack.

Just had a measure up and the ID of the KW fork is 51mm, anyone know what it is on the zs? I tried to reach under the car just now and make it to be quite similar but can't get an exact measurement.

New heater resistor fitted, old one was completely gubbed, so I now have speeds 1 & 2 on the fan. Still blowing cold-ish so I'll start looking in to the Saab valve, etc, probably end up replumb in with the original set up.

As an aside I've also had a low coolant level light ping up on the dash. Coolant level is fine though....anyone had any experience with these level sensors?

petet16
19-12-13, 03:26 PM
Yes, level sensors are uber sensitive, just add a little more coolant it should put the light out.

Hey ho, Skunk2 rear LCA's now ordered to arrive Tuesday :)

petet16
11-01-14, 05:30 PM
The rear suspension components seem to be especially rot prone, I did the rear arb last summer, all of it was as rotten as a pear.

adam
11-01-14, 06:00 PM
Hmm something ill keep an eye on then. Needs must for now with the LCA's but I'm sure I'll get under there again and replace other bits.

stamford
11-01-14, 06:32 PM
I had to use a 10" disc cutter to get my LCAs off. Stupid bolt design has a splined shank, great water trap design!

adam
11-01-14, 06:40 PM
Tell me about it! I wanted to ask on the spline front, are the bushes meant to be splined too? The only other reason I can think is they're meant to be greased but there was definitely no grease anywhere near them.

petet16
11-01-14, 06:41 PM
Yeah, I'm not 100% sure about the purpose of the splined shank, is it close tolerance, or maybe to keep the shank lubed, who knows ?.

adam
11-01-14, 06:44 PM
Lube would make sense, but they definitely hadn't seen it since the car was made, lol.

petet16
11-01-14, 06:46 PM
You're right, the lube idea would only work if they'd greased them on assembly.

adam
14-01-14, 08:56 PM
Whoop, Skunk2 LCA's arrived today.....however Rimmer Bros have been crap and their next day delivery for the bolts turned out to be not next day, at least they refunded the postage though. Hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow so I can get the car back on wheels.

petet16
14-01-14, 09:28 PM
You got the metric fine thread bolts for the arb links to the Skunk arms.

adam
15-01-14, 07:11 AM
Yup, got them Pete.

adam
15-01-14, 06:14 PM
So the main bolts didn't turn up today so I didn't manage to fit the rear suspension and LCA's which sucks, although did cut out the other original LCA which also had a seized bolt. However did also manage to replace the headlights, chop out the HID ballasts, replace the purple lower mesh with some black and reattach the heater cable (seems as though that's why I wasn't getting heat).

petet16
15-01-14, 06:32 PM
Thumbs down for Rimmer Bros on the bolts then,

The cables coming unclipped seems to be pretty common.

adam
15-01-14, 06:40 PM
Yup, Rimmers have been completely rubbish this time.

Do you know if the heater cable should be fixed to the mechanism, the cable just seemed to slip over the top of the 'pole' on the mech?

petet16
15-01-14, 07:52 PM
The cable does as you say just slip over the pole with no other means of fastening.

adam
15-01-14, 07:53 PM
Good old MG Rover engineering :weirdo:

adam
16-01-14, 09:08 PM
Well after checking out the exhaust system the other day at the unit it has no cat, cheeky bidding on eBay and I've picked up a front pipe section with cat for £17.50 posted. Might have to chop it about to fit but the all important cat is there.

adam
19-01-14, 12:43 PM
So got the rear suspension practically done but thought there was a bit of play on the rear trailing arm bushes, after a good look they're completely knackered! Cue stripping the rear down again and trailing arms removed, old bushes pressed out and some new poly bushes ordered. Will get the car back on the road eventually!

Yeah a right PITA but had to be done as I have the MOT coming up in March. Need the exhaust to arrive so I can butcher the cat in to the system, hopefully get that done before the MOT too.....well I sort of need too!

Why oh why did start tinkering, lol!

Rear upper link bush on the passenger side is fubared too, so just had to order one of them. Did consider some adjustable camber arms but cash is a bit tight before payday.

Apart from that, the rear door handles are done now, rear suspension is all sorted too. I may well get her back on the road next weekend.....although probably jinxed that now, lol

adam
31-01-14, 10:30 AM
God forbid I might (read 'hope') get the car back tomorrow! Ended up buying some camber adjustable upper control arms primarily as they're polybushed so won't need replacing again anytime soon! So have them to fit now.

Plans for tomorrow....

Fit new upper control arms
Fit new rear brake pads
Readjust handbrake
Refit centre armrest
Refit d/s rear doorcard (I had an argument with it when replacing the door handle)
Adjust coilover height once off the lift

So not a huge amount to do, just hope I don't find anything else that needs replacing!!

Cheers guys, i'll get some better photos today.

I need to tinker with the suspension some more though, it's pretty twitchy on the back now so the camber needs adjusting and the front is too hard over rough surfaces so it's a little 'bouncy' so need to wind the damping down. That said it's bloody brilliant having a car with coilovers again, I forgot how much fun they make the handling :D

So lots of tinkering this weekend on Clown. First up the suspension all rejigged and she now handles like an absolute dream, chalk and cheese from before. Also raised the height of the coilovers from silly low to acceptable. Then took off the twin pipes which weren't to my taste and fitted a lovely single from Cybox. Need to decide what to do with the holes but may well cover it up with some carbon.

More importantly though the depurpling was accomplished! Also fitted some vinyl supplied by Daz of Locking Vinyl, he did a great job supplying just what I asked for however I made a hash fitting the boot parts. I'll have it redone by a pro but it'll do for now.

So the all important pics....

Email just off to Z&F to see if they can help me with a little idea I have, should make the weeny 1.6 a wee bit different, here's hoping :D

Also been looking in to different brakes as the front stoppers are puny! I guess a 180 set-up would be sufficient, have to change master cylinder and servo too, but I've also been tempted by some nice 4-pots. I think from my research the EK ones should fit as you can get them at a much more reasonable price than anything branded for MG.

Hmm, overdraft abusing time hopefully :D

petet16

I might still have a 180 servo and m/cyl kicking about if you end up needing, I emphasize the might as I had a big clear out of bits I no longer needed.

I'll try and find it tomorrow, although I'm using Brembo front calipers with the 1.6 zs master and servo with no issues, I originally sourced the 180 bits to use, but decided there was no need.

adam
19-02-14, 06:51 PM
Interesting....well if you have it then lemme know and we'll go from there.

I've seen some tasty 4pots for a reasonable amount but might have to wait for payday.

In slightly annoying news Z&F can't help me via their postal service for my engine plans, just waiting on a cost from them and will have to tally things up but it might mean I'll have to fit the emerald earlier than expected.

Aha, but I don't fancy driving the car up there with what I'm planning to do with a map that doesn't suit. So I'd have to factor in transporting the car up there in to my costs.

I have the cost now from Z&F, £249, so I may as well fit the emerald as that's pretty much the cost of a full rolling road session to get that properly mapped. :jump:

I'd not heard of Z&T before. Still the same issue though with travelling/getting the car there.

I think the best option will be to plonk the Emerald on and just take her to the rolling road round the back of Brands Hatch....see if I can get a discount for getting the MGB-K done at the same time

Not done anything to the Clown in a while, just been driving her. The creaking rear is getting to be a bit of a pain now so requires some investigation, I think its the ARB though.

Have ordered up a few bits and bobs including new rear wheel bearings to replace the dodgy ones that are on there at the mo. While the rear is apart I'll be greasing everything up and readjusting the camber as one of the camber arms seems to be coming loose so need to replace the nuts on that with some locking jobbies. Hopefully then I'll have a nicer quiet arse :)

Had some new alternator mounts delivered so I can ditch the aircon and I'm slowly collecting/refurbing parts for the ITB's so she's coming together under the bonnet. Need a lot more cleaning and to de-rust some brackets to smarten it up though.

Not had a chance to fit the brakes yet, hopefully do that when the rear is apart and she's on the lift.

Then I need to tweak the interior, all speakers need replacing as they're knackered and the previous owner left wiring in for a sub so I may get a small one for the boot.

Plenty to do and not enough time really :)

adam
11-07-14, 10:13 AM
My rear end challenge is almost complete!

I've practically replaced everything and am currently running without an ARB as I've been waiting for the new drop links to arrive.

Decided to ditch the camber adjustable top arms as they keep undoing themselves (bloody Chinese crap) and have bought OE solid arms. I think these are the cause of my squeaking as well...funnily enough since it's been raining the past two days my creaking has disappeared, obviously lubrication required somewhere but it makes me think it's not the springs.

Once the rear creaking is solved I'll finally be able to crack on with some decent upgrades, whoot!

Been thinking about that too...it would still leave me with a hole on the LHS though which is what I want rid of.

Yes, holes both sides on the oe Clio diffuser, I think some were made in fibreglass with just a r/h hole.

Yeah, I thought I saw some about but they were hugely expensive.

I guess the silly hole with added question mark adds to the comedy value of the car :w00t:

Nah, that already has the crackle coated/polished rocker cover, form over function for that bad boy. The Clown is just for a laugh :pirate2:

It no longer squeaks!! I've solved it at last!

So I went to the unit this morning and set about replacing the suspension top mounts and fitting the rubber seals that were missing with new items, while I was at it I took off the adjustable upper camber arms and replaced with oe units....no squeak at all! The car is actually a joy to drive now and I can really start enjoying the coilovers, had a nice blat back from the unit and she's running beautifully :D

However, the upper adjustable camber arms...complete *****. The 'polybushes'...if you can call them that...have failed and distorted enormously, the nuts don't 'lock' on the adjusting section and the circlips have come away on one side of each as well. These weren't even the cheapest ones out there, they were purportedly half decent, so a word of warning for anyone with them fitted....keep an eye on them...

Aah, so nice to have a non-squeaky car :D

So now the shopping really starts for operation ITB. Lots of bits and bobs already and some ordered, so the plan is to keep the standard ecu to begin with and see how it runs. Might be awful but we shall see, if it's really bad then i'll swap over to the emerald sooner rather than later. So the shopping list should be....

Jenvey ITB's and trumpets - Got
Altering ITB's for water take off - To do
Throttle cable attachment - Got
Airbox - Got
New sealing foam for airbox - Need
Dzeus fasteners for airbox - Need
100mm Piping - Got
Open cone filter - Got
Brake servo to manifold piping - Need
135 cams - Ordering tonight
VVC injectors - Ordering tonight
New cam cover gasket - Need to order
Loctite for cam carrier - Need to order
New belts (non aircon)- Need to order
Non aircon alternator bracket - Got
PRT kit - Got

And extra bits for sh*ts and giggles....
Lotus cam cover - Waiting delivery
Catch tank - Waiting delivery
Catch tank piping - might have some somewhere to use

So not much more to go, then it's just booking some time to fit it all and the brakes which I STILL haven't got around to, ugh!

Really enjoying this thread, looking forward to seeing what sort of results you get. What sort of power are you aiming for? Is the long term plan to keep the standard 1.6 internals?

To be honest I have no idea on power, it's just a bit of fun at the moment. I have the BRM track car and MGB for my power craving so really this is just for some noise and to say to people....why not....it bugs me when people ask what can be achieved from an engine and the stock response is "get a bigger engined car" so this is just flying in the face of that :D

Long term is to run the 1.6 till it explodes and then I'll use the 1.8 block and forged internals I have laying about to make something more bomb proof. I aim to keep the car for quite a while so might as well have some fun with it :weakbench:

Some 143 vvc injectors, they're a better spray pattern and flow rate than the 160 versions.

It's the beige injectors you want, they have the higher flow rate. I believe they were only on the mems 1.9/2j though.

Yeah, my F is MEMS 2 with beige injectors but I fitted the 52mm TB from a MEMS3, it came with the complete inlet with blue injectors.

Prise it up with your finger nails from the front. It doesn't do anything unless you have climate. Although it does have a plug on the bottom that is usually not attached to anything.

It is for the sunlight sensor on atc equipped cars, yes it just pops out, if you don't have atc the plug for the sensor will be attached to the back of the panel

Bren10 on.org converted his to lift when the ca switches on and has a clock and oil temp gauge in it.
Could be good for that if you fancied.

On the mk1 dash there was a vent, slightly bigger than the blank on the mk2. The airbox underneath has a blanked off outlet, if you are clever you could adapt this to give you a vent.

adam
25-09-14, 02:05 PM
Nah, don't need vents, that's what windows are for....my oil temp and pressure however, these I'd like to know!

Last minute rush for work up to the NEC and back and I didn't see a single other ZS! Saw one R75, one R25 and two R200 bubbles. In fact no other MG's.

Probably a good thing as the ZS is filthy at the moment, needs a decent valet. But they are definitely rare beasts now.

Sure, it will be repaired to the same high standard as the MGB.

As you say dont see many ZS, specially around here. Sunny Bournemouth.

I don't have any at the moment, will try and get some later. Proper rattle can special, I need to wet sand it and polish to get a decent shine as it's looking a little matt at the mo.

Yup, all gathering dust at the moment, lol!

I need to collect them together and double check I have everything before we get started, nothing like having something missing when you're in the middle of a job!

I have a bunch of interior parts that need fitting/making up as well but that's the next project after the engine and brakes are done.
