Hi

Quick question
When does the cam belt need changing and how much would I expect to pay ?

90,000 miles or six years and expect to pay from around 600 upwards.

Thats a good quote Dan, the parts aren't cheap, so £530 is pretty decent.

Hi

It is def 90k or 6 years.
Just spoken to someone that specialises in cam belts and it is £500 all in.
He said he doesn't usually change the water pump unless needed.
He has done about 30 in the past so has a good idea .....

£500 sounds good but I would defo change the water pump at the same time while its all bein done shouldn't cost much more to buy a new water pump .

I would insist on the water pump being done at the same time.

I also thought it was 60k. Was planning to get it done this year as im not far off 60.
Isnt it also worth doing the thermastat at the same time too? Sure I read this somewhere.

Thermostat doesn't matter so much in regards to doing it at the same time as it isn't driven off the timing belt, it isn't driven at all!

Its deffo 90 and it's not the stat that needs replaced it's the water pump as it one of those things that needs the belt off to be changed so if you are having the belts done you might as well get the water pump done while it is all stripped down.

I find it hard to believe there's 30 ZS owners who've decided to get their belts done. I haven't came across 30 that want their oil changed never mind belts!!

Likely because most would have a go at the basic stuff - even me to a degree - but when it comes to belts it's time for the pros ...

If you want to be pedantic, you actually haven`t actually mentioned any make, model or engine. Seeing as you`re on a ZS forum and your username infers you own a ZS180, I like every other poster before me assumed you were indeed talking about an MG ZS 180 2.5 KV6.

To be fair I read it as KV6 so that includes 45's, 75's, ZT's and some 4x4 thing and as some were due a belt change eight years ago so that is an average of0.0144230769230769 a day, even less if he's including the earlier V6 Rovers (even though they're not KV6's).

Sorry was only trying to be helpful.

The mechanic I spoke to was very genuine so I am sure wouldn't make things up in fact he was the one who looked up and confirmed the due date and mileage.

A good friend once told me

Opinions are like assholes everyone's got one .....

No offence intended !

I made a comment in jest with regards to tight MG owners, nothing about the quality or consistency of the boys work mate.
