With insurance constantly climbing and crash for cash schemes seeming more and more common I decided I'd like to cover myself and get a dash cam up.

Didn't really bother doing much research on them and tbh it was abit of an impulse buy but opted for a Mobius actioncam, that can film wide angle footage in 1080p or 720p as well as take stills, whilst only costing 40 odd quid!

I initially intended to just stick it to the dash and hide it behind the build in screen. However once it was in place despite its tiny size didn't like it so started thinking where I could hide it...

This is what it was like when I received it.

After cutting away the trim around the rearview mirror to see how it would fit found that whilst in one piece it just wasn't going to happen. So after some head scratching opened up the camera and started tearing it apart. Here's what I was left with...

Cut up the case the camera came in and mounted the lens to the mirror trim.

Took the cameras main circuit board and screwed it to the top of the trim.

Cut the trim to mount the circuit boards buttons and the chips heat sinks. Had to get an extension lead to attach the lens to the circuit board, still needs alittle tiding up but you get the idea.

Tried to get one from outside but its so discrete and with the reflections honestly couldn't see it :)

There's a USB lead that plugs into the circuit board and runs under the headliner and down the A-pillar into the USB port in the glove box. So the camera comes on and automatically records when the car is started and turns off 5mins after the ignition is turned off. Records to a small SD card which just loops when full, can be accessed with by plugging a laptop into the usb lead so no need to remove it.

I'm very happy with it, the video quality is amazing from such a small and cheap camera! Highly recommend it for anyone thinking about getting one!

Cheers, I was keen on the auto record as I know for a fact I'd always forget to turn it on. Least now its fit and forget. Hopefully I'll never need it but you never know, as you found out Pete so many morons about!!

I always figured these as a double edged sword, it can save you and land you in it.
But this is a very nice install, very well done.

I have steadfastly failed to learn to speak Spanish, don't mind not understanding the mother in law.

That is a very neat installation, well worth doing considering what we see on the roads everyday.

Finally got it all plugged in, realised that by disconnecting the built in battery it resets the date everytime its turned on so had to squeeze that into the install.

Here's a clip of it in action on my way to the gym this morning on the busy streets of Bristol.
