Just watching an old Jensen on TV and love the V8 rumble, made me think what's everyone's preference? I know V12's are more exotic but tbh they aurally do little for me. I have included V6's and inline4's to cover our cars but tbh I love V6's but have to plump for V8;)

The American V8 does it everytime, especially a Chevvy lump

I love the sound and power of a V8 but as I can't afford one I'm happy with my twin cam 4pot :)

I voted before looking at the poll and was surprised that everyone so far had gone for a V8! Just shows what a presence that sound makes. Many years ago I built a V8 powered Chevette track car and then a Bedford CF350 tow van. I have plans to buy a V8 Mustang before I retire, perhaps within the next 5-10 years.

One engine that I have a soft spot for is the 5 cyl Audi engine as fitted to the 80, 100 and coupes in the 80s, built and raced many of them too, great engines and go on and on. Unique sound.

There is something about the rumble of a V8.

I am probably going to get me a big old American yank tank at some point in the future.... have always found that sound desireable.

there is an AMG merc that goes up my hill periodically that I hear from the house, and that sounds tasty too in fairness!

V8 for the win probably one of the most amazing sounds in the world.

Even my 3.5 Range Rover had that nice V8 rumble.

The first car sound I remember was the old Rover P5 3.5 V8.

The V6 sounds close, both in the ZS and in my old Espace 2.9 (don't, it was given to me ;) ).

Then there is the unique sound of a flat four, especially hi po versions.

I'm going against the consensus here and saying in-line 4....a lovely nasp engine with hot cams, itb's and a carbon air box just sounds sooooo dirty at full chat and accelerating is just a pant moistening ripping sound!

I have to say the 2.3 slant four in my Chevette was awesome, twin cam, 16 valve running twin 48s, proper group 4 rally car right there. Open trumpets, nothing like it on full chat!

V12 Daytona, just listening to the starter motor firing up the beast, then the scream that only an Italian engine can make.............................................. ...............

ohh wake up. should just stick to the v6 in the 180.........................

I went V8.

I will own one - probably when I retire and don't have a commute of 40 miles.

A few years ago I used to drive a marked sherpa carrier when deployed in public order duties. Before we went with merc diesels we had Sherpas with petrol V8s. Not very fast - terrible handling and we'd get maybe 150 miles on £80 worth of unleaded (and that was in the 1990s) - but they just sounded "proper"

Probably the best noise in the world is the BRM V16.

We have a V8, but I think they're overrated. I prefer the scream of a big straight 6. V12s are nice too.

I remember going to the flicks to watch Mad Max 2 when it came out and loved that Interceptor with the charger, awesome noise. However the noise was probably another car knowing what they do in the movies!

I remember the episode of "for the love of cars" on the triumph stag V8 and they did a harmonic test against the Jag e type V12 at MIRA. The results were very interesting. The V8 was more a single note played in the same key that gave it a lovely continual burble but the V12 was like several notes playing randomly. The results were that the V8 gave a more pleasing harmonic effect on the ear than the superior V12.

I seen that one too and would have shouted fix if the V12 had won lol
