Sadly i have just discovered that when i recently handed over 1640 to pay for the rental of a holiday villa, through www.homeaway.co.uk, wasn't actually going to the owner of the villa, but to an east european gang who have hacked various parts of the website and are directing enquiry e-mails etc to them rather than the owners. consequently i have lost my money, and 7 hours yesterday with Lloyds bank and the Fraud squad have highlighted that i cannot get it back from the bank or the website owners. so i have to raise funds to cover this loss, so will be selling my 180.

anyone who ever saw the car when Clive owned it, will know its a nice one. and i am looking for 1500 if possible.

anyone after a nice 180 mk2 saloon?

my mobile is 07760-505450 if you need to take a look at her and you are near birmingham.

That my friend is a feckin nightmare. Gutted for you.

I take it you didn't use a credit card then to pay for it ?

You just beat me to that car first time around when Clive was selling it but I'm not in the market any more. Sad scenario to be selling, but I wish you well with the sale.

Sorry to hear that you are not able to get it back - it is one reason I try to use CC for expensive purchases as they are slightly easier to claw back money under certain circumstances :(

Good luck with the sale, even if it is for really shitty reasons :(

thanks Guys, You live and learn as they say. I am extremely gutted to have to sell my car. I would rather sell a car out of chosing to part with it rather than being forced to. I haven't finished enjoying it yet.

Last time i do a bank transfer for anything. The Cop from the fraud unit told me they are everywhere, holiday sites, autotrader, gum tree, ebay. vermin

Sorry to hear, thanks for the warning.

Has the car still got the LPG conversion.

Remember the car well, seems a low price, best of luck with the sale.

Just shows how careful you have to be now a days.

That's a crappy situation to find yourself in.

Best of luck with the sale, it's a very nice example.

Hi PeteZS
sadly not or i would keep it and sell my diesel i use each day.
Both My older ZS and Clive's older SZ were the 2 that had LPG, this one's unmolested.

Strange... if the website you used is a legitimate website that has been hacked then they are liable and by law should fix their website and refund you the money.

Funny enough my day to day job means I am a network and security specialist for the firm I work for and as part of that I am a "Certified Hacker" so I would like to think I know the law... Unfortunately the fraud squad don't know the law in these scenarios as much as they should.

As for the 180... I would love it but I don't have that sort of cash at the moment :(

Sorry to hear this but I wouldn't take it lying down, talk to the CAB and any trade bodies the holiday firm belong to.

Sorry i went quiet. My laptop's hard drive was either corrupt, or suffered dimensia, anyway. it will finally boot up again now, so back on line.

Good news, Of the 1640 i lost, www.Homeaway.co.uk have agreed to give me 700 back ( thats the Maximum their ins covers) so I am only down just under 1000.

so now i can keep the Zed. ( might have to sell the motor bike still, but hey ho).

Scary whats going on, dont know where or who, you are sending money to.

No trade association you can go to??

Wonder if you could go to a small claims court, seems harsh, but if their site was hacked thats down to them. Why should you be out of pocket. They have admitted liability by offering you £700. Its not your fault their insurance doesnt cover the total loss, on the booking. Again down to them. Why doesnt it cover the full loss??

Just my 2p's worth.

Good news but still sucks.

talked to the Citizens advice and our legal people here at work, they all say the same really. as i went into my lloyds account on line and transfered the moeny myself, I am at fault for not knowing i was being conned, so technically in the eyes of teh law, the site hosting the Villa need not offer me a penny. so their 700 offer is more than i am entitled to.

at least you are not totally out of pocket,£700 backs better than nothing mate, and at least you dont have to sell the zed,all good news!

Sorry you had the loss, but thanks for letting us all know.

Dont know how we are supposed to protect ourselves against these conmen.

Wonder if we paid by credit card we would have more protection???

Suppose you could have contacted the Villa Company and confirmed their bank details. Not that I'm having a dig at you. Just wondering after the horse bolted, kind of thing. Before this I would have done the same as you, but now, on any large payments, might check details first.

Glad they offered something back, wonder if you went direct to them and asked for a discounted Villa. They might be more willing to shave a bit off the price, rather than more cash back.

Thats assuming you still wont to deal with them!!!

Paying by credit card does give more protection, pretty much everything I pay for on line is by CC now.

peterzs
23-09-14, 11:17 AM
Does Paypal offer the same protection???

Dan1971

Does Paypal offer the same protection???

It claims to offer protection, but I remember a few years back paying about £1500 for some new oak furniture and then the guy telling me he had stopped trading. That was all paypal and they only refunded half....

That's the trouble these days - some you win - some you lose.

Pretty much everything I pay using a credit card and I pay off the balance every month. There are so much protection using a credit card over cash and even a debit card.

It is amazing how much misconceptions on people believing owning a credit card means you are in debt.

Credit cards offer protection for payments over £100, some visa debit cards but check with your bank.
