Whilst looking at my rear brakes, I noticed that the anti roll bar seemed to be coated in a rubber/plastic and this was perishing .... should I be worried ... is this usual?

It's normal, they all do it, the twisting motion of the bar tends to split the paint, and then rust gets a hold.

Better off using a rubber like paint then for painting one you'll you say?
rather than powder coating etc which would leave a less flexible finish.

Something flexible is more durable, powder coating will crack pretty quickly, something like stonechip might last ok, but doesn't look very pretty
