Anyone selling one? In the process of upgrading the car, think this would finish it off nicely.

Thanks! Any ideas where I could get one? I've bitten the bullet now and have got engine coming with all belts done, complete with full Janspeed system including de-cat and manifolds and ordering TTV flywheel with new clutch. Ideal time to do Quaife conversion if you ask me!

A 620ti box with a torsen diff would be easier to find tbh, used quiafes appear on ebay now and then, but the Lotus boys bid them to silly prices.

tom halliwell on fb had one for sale, torsen not quaife tho.

I wouldn't buy a quaife unless it was cheap, there are much better diffs out there

Saw a gripper diff in a 180 pg1 on Facebook the other day... Went for £50 kicked myself a bit... But must sort rest of car out first really lol

Cutting a long story short, I have found someone who is willing to part with a PG1 gearbox fitted with steel caged bearings and the Quaife differential. Apparently it has been removed from a Lotus Exige and is a close ratio box. I enquired about the close-ratio's and how they would compare to a standard PG1 box and basically the fella got back to me and said that the ratios are the same, but 5th gear is slightly longer for more top end (doesn't really matter to me). Apparently the whole gearbox and bell-housing is a straight swap for the one bolted to the ZS 180.

Does this ring right with all of you gearbox experts as I'm blind when it comes to these!?

Here is a picture of the part in question...

*** Quick Edit - as quoted by the seller - "It's a straight swap all you need to change is the clutch fork arm and your speedo drive" ***

No good to you, the bell housing has the wrong bolt pattern for the kv6.

Did you get the link I messaged you ?

OK thanks for that, I can't tell how different the casings are as I've never seen one removed like that! Glad that's cleared that up. I've just got your link, thanks for that.

Does the 620 box have the same ratios as the PG1 in the ZS?

Yes it does, you just need to swap the clutch operating arm from your old PG1 to the new one

£50 for a torsen one, didn't realise they were so cheap these days! Mine has been sitting in my garage for 8 months as a back up in case my current gearbox has issues.

Could you not remove the Diff from the Lotus one pictured above and fit it to your current box? - I'd be tempted to do that and at the same time fit steel cage bearings and replace the seals... If the price was right?

I'm aware of a few diffs for the ZS, Quaife, Torsen and Gripper? Not sure if there are any others?

From what I've read Gripper are the best, followed by Quaife then Torsen? How does a Torsen compare to a Quaife? Apart from cost!

I could go that route, but that would be a specialist job because I'm not confident enough with gearbox internals. I did message a fella known as "Rally Matt" on XPF who built/builds the PG1 boxes with the Quaife diffs and steel caged bearings. I think people have had some problems getting hold of him, but I messaged him anyway. I think he is based somewhere near Silverstone?

What's the cost of installing diff and steel bearings into a box, anyone got a rough idea? There's two places local to me that do gearbox rebuilds, although one of them gets terrible reviews!

No Idea on costs I'm afraid!

As for Matt, used to know him quite well back in the day (back when he was a Rally driver for MG and Leda supplied him suspension!) IIRC he is based within silverstone itself, I would assume he has changed his phone number since the last time I spoke to him, but I still have his mobile number from 10 years ago... lol

As for quality of his work, I can't say I've heard of anything bad about him... I think he did some work on a few Diesels on here at some point and IIRC they were happy. Plus he's always given me sound advice on the phone :)

with carbon plate diffs being only small extra cost over a brand new quaife, you wonder why anyone bothers with helical diffs.

Yes it does, you just need to swap the clutch operating arm from your old PG1 to the new one

So am I right in saying a complete 620ti box will bolt straight to a kv6 and have the same ratios?

If so, fitting an lsd to the 180 is going to be easier than fitting the one to the diesel!

Awesome, guess that's something else to go on the shopping list. Probably wait until the clutch gives up first though.

Matt does all the work on my derv - and currently has it, I can give you his current number if you pm me.

He is just moving house though, so not sure where he is with his work load....

Not sure how often he goes on the forums or FB for that matter anymore

A darn sight more if you put Lotus in the title, they pay stupid prices for a type B.
