Ok guys, as you may have seen I've recently decided to move my XPG saloon on as she wasn't seeing much of the road. I didn't really want to sell up but it's a shame to keep a perfectly good car sitting around unused, especially one as nice as her.

Now, I didn't have any plans to buy another ZS, or any other car in fact, but after a bit of late night browsing (and a few beers if I'm honest) I stumbled across this on an MG sales page -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpstkxicovq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpstkxicovq.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsd4wcigdf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsd4wcigdf.jpg.html)

I absolutely adore the Firefrost Red MG/R colour, it's my all time favourite, so I guess you can probably see how this was going to pan out.

To be fair, I was going to do a bit of saving and buy a project car to play with after Christmas, but seeing as I don't currently have a project I thought why not. Ive driven many cars but nothing delivers the bang for buck that the ZS does. Nothing really comes close for the money you can pick one of these up for.

Anyway, a five hour round trip last weekend and she was mine -

She's low milage and completely standard and unmolested, barring a sheddist clutch kit and a few dark ice designs bits. It's a nice blank canvas for me to start with.

There wasn't too much service history with the car but I'm not too worried on that front as I think this'll be a full strip down restoration.

I've already made a start last weekend on that front. Here's some pictures -

Front bumper off -

Headlights out and N/S wing off -

N/S skirt off -

Rear bumper off -

O/S skirt off -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpst2fpxl3a.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpst2fpxl3a.jpg.html)

O/S wing off -

So far so good. Next up I decided to degrease and clean the underside of the car so I could take a look at the general condition and check for any rust.

O/S under arch cleaned -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg4_zps0mz0fzsj.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg4_zps0mz0fzsj.jpg.html)

N/S under arch cleaned -

Floorpan cleaned -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsa1lxjsrw.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsa1lxjsrw.jpg.html)

Jacking points -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsvz7borid.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsvz7borid.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpslncuv2cy.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpslncuv2cy.jpg.html)

Surface rust and some pitting but most importantly they passed the screw driver test, no holes !

O/S rear under arch cleaned -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg5_zpsng7dhxia.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg5_zpsng7dhxia.jpg.html)

N/S under arch cleaned -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg4_zpsjxeus8pi.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg4_zpsjxeus8pi.jpg.html)

Rear end cleaned -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsls7x0d7u.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsls7x0d7u.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpseoio9vh7.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpseoio9vh7.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpsezytjt9g.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpsezytjt9g.jpg.html)

All in all I was pretty pleased, not too much rust and no holes. I did however discover an oil leak, I'll get back to this though.

Into the garage she went -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsmt8futg2.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsmt8futg2.jpg.html)

And up on axle stands -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpskgny3btm.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpskgny3btm.jpg.html)

Back to the oil leak, traced it to the dipstick oil tube -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpstkgrpjjh.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpstkgrpjjh.jpg.html)

Appeared to be coming from the bung that the tube sits in -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg4_zpshbzmpdvs.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg4_zpshbzmpdvs.jpg.html)

So I went online and ordered a new replacement from rimmer brothers -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zps9cbk6pud.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zps9cbk6pud.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpssiefwcxz.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpssiefwcxz.jpg.html)

And got to work removing the old one. A lot easier said then done, involved a large flat head screwdriver and some long nose pliers. Come out in the end though -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsnuv4hs1a.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsnuv4hs1a.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg4_zpsc24sonuw.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg4_zpsc24sonuw.jpg.html)

New one fitted and we now have no oil leaks -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg5_zps3gem17ck.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg5_zps3gem17ck.jpg.html)

To be continued in another post.

Continued.

Back to the bodywork, I stripped the running gear both sides until I was left with the drive shafts and lower arms -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsc0u1p2nz.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsc0u1p2nz.jpg.html)

And then removed the front frame, ARB and the steering rack. I'll have the frame and ARB powdercoated -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zps2pbdtf2a.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zps2pbdtf2a.jpg.html)

Various brackets removed ready to be powder coated, was thinking X Power Green but I'll make a decision on colour when I get down to the shop -

With all that out the way it meant I could get started wire brushing. Here's the N/S cleaned up back to bare metal where it needed to be and hand sanded to provide a key elsewhere -

Got the drivers side wire brushed and Zinc primed today, was a hard slog given the little amount of space I have to actually work on the car but got it done all the same.

So, here's the under arch wire brushed back to bare metal where it needed to be and block sanded back else where -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsznrckedd.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsznrckedd.jpg.html)

And then covered in a few coats of Zinc primer -

Not the best pictures but it's difficult to take anything decent in such limited space.

Anyway that's all the work I've got done thus far, will be back at it again next weekend !

Wow! You don't hang about! Wasn't expecting that.

Hopefully looking at getting it back on the road ready for Pride Of Longbridge next year, so I want to get the body and running gear done as soon as possible before the winter sets in. Don't fancy a cold garage floor in December  !

Always a pleasure to looki such project didplay. Good job!

Thanks bud !

Top work!

Cheers,

It's a long tedious job but worth the results in the end.

Cheers bud,

Yeh, it's a great colour !

Love firefrost and more great work going on there, some attention to detail you have bud! Itching for your next update already!

Thanks Gary.

You are far too keen, puts the rest of us to shame.

Tend to get a bit carried away when I get stuck in, all necessary work in my eyes though !

wow that was one of the shortest "leaving the folds" i think weve had. just shows how much these cars get under your skin. so is this nightfire red or firefrost red, im a bit confused?

Knew I had the name of the colour wrong, it's Firefrost red, paint code CEV.

Not too sure if I can change the title of this thread though, will have a look see.

Cheers buddy !

Got some more done on the ZS this weekend, I'll start with the seam sealing.

Here's the N/S taped up ready for the seam sealer to be applied -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zps4zgqttwx.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zps4zgqttwx.jpg.html)

Seam sealer applied -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zps6f3dli82.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zps6f3dli82.jpg.html)

Worked in, smoothed off and tape removed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zps1vezzdzq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zps1vezzdzq.jpg.html)

Jacking point sealed up too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg4_zpshvwxavbn.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg4_zpshvwxavbn.jpg.html)

Rinse and repeat for the O/S, taped up -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpstpzlnreq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpstpzlnreq.jpg.html)

Seam sealer applied -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zps0rk0qbrc.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zps0rk0qbrc.jpg.html)

Smoothed off and tape removed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsjmwxonnm.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsjmwxonnm.jpg.html)

I also removed the air con and coolant rads today. I've wire brushed and sanded back the front valence too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zps3g8xeb0k.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zps3g8xeb0k.jpg.html)

Masked up around the valence -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpsfqdmzbj6.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpsfqdmzbj6.jpg.html)

And Zinc primed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsykretzbf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsykretzbf.jpg.html)

I also painted behind it too but I couldn't get a decent picture of that.

I've begun stripping down the running gear so I can refurb the lot, here's the N/S bottom arm stripped and wire brushed back to bare metal -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zps8wwmm4yq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zps8wwmm4yq.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpstigveitk.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpstigveitk.jpg.html)

The bushes are fine so I masked up around them. Anything that's got a bush in it I'll refurb myself, the rest will go off to be blasted and coated.

Zinc primed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg4_zpsjbdozcrk.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg4_zpsjbdozcrk.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpseoubgzsx.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpseoubgzsx.jpg.html)

And painted black -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpsqxtdw93c.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpsqxtdw93c.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpso7hawcyw.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpso7hawcyw.jpg.html)

I'll leave that to dry for a few days now as the paint takes a while to properly cure.

I've also stripped down the damper and spring assemblies -

The dampers will be kept as they're fine, the forks refurbished and the springs will be replaced as I'm going to get a set of lowering springs from Moto-Build. I've read a few reviews and they seem to be favourable so far.

And finally, these are the bits going to the powder coaters tomorrow -

Welcome back ...

Lmao, didn't last long I know !

Welcome back mate, love the Firefrostnessnessness :D

Thanks bud !

Hats off to you mate . your putting a lot of hard work into that . Gotta say firefrost is an amazing colour I love mine when its been cleaned and polished .

Cheers bud,

Firefrost is brilliant, looks amazing in the sun, really makes the flake pop !

Wow that was a short time period not having a ZS... you know how to give some car more than just TLC!

Thanks mate,

Have to say, out of the cars I've sold in the past, the XPG ZS I had was the one I missed the most, so when this one popped up I couldn't resist !

Been in the garage again this weekend, got a few more hours in on the ZS.

Gave both the under arches a few coats of Gravigard -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg5_zpsy22vnyfs.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg5_zpsy22vnyfs.jpg.html)

And the Valence too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpso9hnbsns.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpso9hnbsns.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpskus7zhxp.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpskus7zhxp.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpstqbiafhf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpstqbiafhf.jpg.html)

I made sure to give that a good 24 hours to dry, even though it says ready to over paint in 3-4 hours, as Gravigard can be a bit temperamental if you try to paint over it too quickly. Learnt that the hard way !

Now, I usually buy my top coat paint from halfords when I'm doing jobs like this. It's not the best paint in the world or even the best colour match, but it's cheap, easy to get hold of and is substantial enough for what I need it to do. For some reason or other they don't sell any paint in my colour code so they offered to mix me some up. I've done this before and it didn't end well !

So, instead, I bought some Firefrost Red paint from a seller called Paints4U on eBay and I have to say I'm pretty pleased with it -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zps4xtkxuey.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zps4xtkxuey.jpg.html)

Got the N/S painted up -

Valence too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsiqlkx9gz.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsiqlkx9gz.jpg.html)

Ran out of paint at that though as I only bought the one can to try.

Let the base coat tack off and then laid some clear coat lacquer over the top -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsxeeqbcsf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsxeeqbcsf.jpg.html)

I'm quite happy with the outcome of that. A fair few layers of protection on there now so should see the car rust free for the foreseeable future I hope !

Finally, I bought some stainless steel Janspeed manifolds from a chap on this forum. I received them on Friday and I'm very pleased with them -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg5_zpsdkiqpct1.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg5_zpsdkiqpct1.jpg.html)

I'm going to give them a soak in some Bilt Hambers Deox-C for a day or two which should clean them up nicely, then I'll give them a good polish.

Only got the one day in the garage this weekend, still got a bit done though.

Base coat laid down on drivers side -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpseofd08lz.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpseofd08lz.jpg.html)

Let that tack off and then laid down some clear coat -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpsbdkyett0.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpsbdkyett0.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsbat8ftdp.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsbat8ftdp.jpg.html)

Also got some base coat on the passenger side turret/front leg -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg4_zpshypge1a4.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg4_zpshypge1a4.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg5_zpsv5nelsrf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg5_zpsv5nelsrf.jpg.html)

I'm not going to apply any clear coat to that yet though as I've decided I want to do the whole turret so it all blends in together. Will do this when I've taken the engine out though as I'll have more room. Will be a lot easier for me to change the belts and what not with it out too.

Finally, I bought some Deox C and left the manifolds to soak in it for 24 Hours.

This is the tub it comes in if anyone was wondering -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsttxlavbo.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsttxlavbo.jpg.html)

I forgot to take photos when I took the manifolds out but I can tell you it works a treat. Completely clean and all the corrosion from the flanges was removed.

I was owed a favour for a bit of paint correction I did a while back, so I had him polish up the headers for me with his machine. Here they are -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zps6xlty4id.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zps6xlty4id.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpsskkxfzpj.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpsskkxfzpj.jpg.html)

I was going to get the Y-Piece done also but upon closer inspection the threads in one of the oxygen sensor holes has been completely destroyed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsgwqbvsgw.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsgwqbvsgw.jpg.html)

Not the best picture but gives you an idea. Annoyed by this but it is repairable. I'm going to take it down to an exhaust specialist near me and have the damaged lug cut off and have a new one tig welded on.

Bit more done on the ZED today.

Decided to paint the whole front end. Wasn't going to bother as the paint from the factory was still in pretty good condition but thought why not, it'll all help to keep the rust away.

Sanded back with some coarse 3M pads and then finished of with some 2000 grit wet and dry along the top panel to provide a nice smooth surface ready for some base coat -

That bit took ages and I now have quite a sore thumb. With jobs like this though it's in the prep where it counts !

Base coat down -

Quite happy with the outcome of today's work. Didn't manage to get the turrets done though as it was getting quite late by the time I'd finished that and light was fading. Job for next weekend !

Went to the my local scrap yard yesterday and managed to get a few bits too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1480_zps6hka6hbc.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1480_zps6hka6hbc.jpg.html)

All quite sought after bits for just a few copper coins. I would've had the Black Oak dash fascia too but whoever went in the car before me had broken it in half, such a shame !

If anyone's got the dash fascia in black oak they want to part with then feel free to drop me a PM with a price.

Anyway, that's this weekends progress.

More progress made this weekend.

Left that to dry and got to work refurbishing the steering rack, here it is painted up -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1489_zps8bhmjcka.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1489_zps8bhmjcka.jpg.html)

The track rod ends feel fine so I decided to keep them, easy enough to change later down the line if need be anyway.

Been back in the garage again this weekend. Didn't manage to get much done last weekend though as I was out picking up various bits and pieces I need to get the ZS finished.

Managed to get another under engine tray as mine was missing, I suspect it was taken off due to the oil leak and never put back on. Also got hold of an O/S arch liner as mine was broken, just need the N/S now as that's broken too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1539_zpssordp7xz.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1539_zpssordp7xz.jpg.html)

I seen a complete Black Oak dash assembly on a Facebook for sale page for a reasonable price so I didn't waste any time in purchasing that, here it is -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1542_zpshp63dopd.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1542_zpshp63dopd.jpg.html)

And also sourced a new cup/pen holder insert and a flocked glove box too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1541_zpsynmgrmcx.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1541_zpsynmgrmcx.jpg.html)

All bits that'll give the car a bit more of a 'premium' feel if you like.

Anyway, onto this weekends work. I decided to start refurbishing some of the running gear. I wasn't happy with the paint finish the enamel paint on the passenger side bottom arm had left, so I decided to re-do it with some Aerosol satin black. Same goes for the drivers side too.

Wire brushed them both back to bare metal and then zinc primed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1519_zpszkkcptz2.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1519_zpszkkcptz2.jpg.html)

Painted -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1520_zpsajmbqopn.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1520_zpsajmbqopn.jpg.html)

And back together again ready to go back onto the car -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1521_zpsxla1edwi.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1521_zpsxla1edwi.jpg.html)

Got the subframe refitted back onto the car, a real pig to get the steering column splines lined up but got it done in the end -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1527_zpsh0kae8rg.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1527_zpsh0kae8rg.jpg.html)

Fitted the bottom arms back onto the car -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1525_zpsfbixbphe.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1525_zpsfbixbphe.jpg.html)

And then waxed the cavities and under arches with this stuff. S-50 for the cavities and UC to provide a protective clear wax film for the under arches-

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1523_zpsa5jwob9v.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1523_zpsa5jwob9v.jpg.html)

I know the green won't be to everyone's liking but I think it looks epic !

Should be ordering the lowering springs from Moto-Build next week, as well as new bearings and ball joints for the hubs as they're knackered, so shouldn't be too long until she's rolling again.

Cheers Mick,

Should be worth all the work when she's done !

Think it's important to save the longbridge cars, what with MG ceasing production in the U.K and the amount of them that are being broken for parts, they'll all be a bit of history in the future.

Cheers bud,

Done a few cars now and I always end up playing it safe and going with gloss black at the powder coaters.

Thought I'd do something a bit different this time with the green and I must say I love it !

There wont be any green on the outside of the car what so ever but under the car and in the engine bay there will be plenty !

Anything else on the shopping list?

Cheers Dan,

There's still a decent sized list to get through, but to finish off the front end I'll need the following;

Lowering springs
New bearings & ball joints
Braided brake lines
Calliper rebuild kits
Discs & pads (recently been changed although not sure on brand or quality)
Alloys powder coated gloss black
Hankook Ventus tyre's or something along those lines
Both wings and bumper repainted (stone chips & I damaged the bottom of the O/S bodykit when removing it so will have to repair this)
New horn
Stainless Exhaust system (may go with Janspeed but not sure yet, need to do some more research on this)

And the list goes on. After that's done though it'll be belts, water pump, plugs, service and possible thermostat change before the engine goes back in.

Then just a case of spinning the car around and doing the same with the back end.

Good man ....

Exterior stuff seems to be something you're really keen on. I'd look to get some alcantara seats in there and some chrome rings for the dials and vents (from a 45) would be good additions.

When you put the wheels back on after coating, paint the hubs and calipers?

Put it all back together ...... then sell it on ..... ? ;)

Already have the chrome vents from a 45, £3 for all four from my local breakers yard, bargain. Seat wise I think I'm going to go with a couple of nice bucket seats and some TAKATA harnesses, I'll remove the back seats entirely as they won't be needed and I'll make something to fill the hole they leave. I will keep the seats in storage though in case I ever want to use it for a family day out or something like that. This ZS will be more of a toy if I'm honest, for the shows and maybe even a couple of track days. Goes without saying that the hubs will be painted, calipers are with the powder coaters already, having them green too.

Truth is, I just can't be bothered with the hassle the seats will bring. I had a really clean PBT Black ZR before the XPG ZS and I did a similar thing with that, stripped it all back and painted the under arches, had various panels repainted and put all the nice bits on it, janspeed manis, full exhaust system, lowering springs etc... Spent a fortune on alcantara seats, then had to have the bolsters repaired and part of the alcantara replaced, was a nightmare trying to match the colour of the alcantara !

Looked good in the end though -

Thing is though Dan, I get bored fairly quickly after I've finished the cars, then I end up selling them on and regretting it after, it's a vicious circle lmao !

Saving grace with the ZR though was my uncle bought it from me for my asking price no questions asked. Didn't even get close to what I'd put into it as you never do but he looks after it really well and I know there's always the possibility for me to buy it back if I ever want too.

I think this ZS will be a keeper though, think I've learnt my lesson now, but we'll see I suppose.

Yeh they changed a few buttons and switches around on the MK2, much better layout imo.

Will flush the whole system through and refill with some quality coolant when the engines back in, no point doing it until then as it'll end up all over the floor.

Not for everyone I know, not even sure if they're for me yet. Part of the reason why I'll be keeping the standard seats. Besides, I can always pick up a set of leather seats in the future if I don't like the buckets, bound to be someone with a set somewhere.

Just a quick one.

Picked my calipers up from the powder coaters yesterday, very happy with them. I got them put back together today with a couple of rebuild kits I bought. Here they are -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1559_zpsoeqj8bps.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1559_zpsoeqj8bps.jpg.html)

And back together again, painted up the heads of the slider pins too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1562_zpsxwqwlozz.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1562_zpsxwqwlozz.jpg.html)

Also went down to the garage today and fitted a few more brackets back onto the car, nothing worth taking a picture of though. I've fished out a few more brackets I missed taking down to the coaters last time and I've also removed the Dark Ice rear strut brace so it can be done along with the front brace. Will take these down on Monday.

Probably won't be doing too much over Christmas as funds are needed else where, but we shall see !

She'll certainly be used Mick, don't you worry lol. No point in doing all this work if your not going to enjoy the end result !

Know how you feel, what I thought would be an hour job putting the calipers back together today took four. Had to get creative with removing the excess powder coat from the slider pin holes in the carrier as they wouldn't go in.

I usually try to keep Sundays free to play with the cars but like you say, sometimes you can't always make the time !

Any chance you can post up pics of what treatments you are using? Be interested for my little winter project. I bought some good quality rust renovator. The zinc coat I'm after.

No problem.

I usually have a set routine when it comes to rust removal/treatment.

Firstly, I'll completely remove any underseal or top coat from the area I'm working with. This is the only way to get the full picture of how bad any given area is.

I use a knotted wire wheel on my angle grinder as it makes light work of removing factory underseal and paint. Here's a link to what I use - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100mm-4-TWIST-KNOT-WIRE-WHEEL-BRUSH-FOR-ANGLE-GRINDER-/262727252383.

Smaller knotted wheels can also be purchased for use in a drill for tighter areas.

Always try to purchase a crimped wire wheel as the un-crimped wheels have a nasty habit of disintegrating mid-use when they have worn down. Make sure to always wear eye protection too, these are no joke, especially the angle grinder wheel.

The area should look something like this after the initial wire brushing -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsacj9w2pa.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsacj9w2pa.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsdvcg5arr.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsdvcg5arr.jpg.html)

Here's an example of how efficient factory/aftermarket underseal can be at hiding rust and corrosion. What looks to be a reasonably sound area is quite the opposite once the underseal has been removed. This is an XPG ZS I used to own -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpskxzucr3b.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpskxzucr3b.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg5_zpssvmvd9mn.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg5_zpssvmvd9mn.jpg.html)

And upon removal of said underseal -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpswu4nedjc.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpswu4nedjc.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zpsv3gzo9gi.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zpsv3gzo9gi.jpg.html)

In this case welding/panel replacement was required.

If I have any rusty/pitted areas I like to use rust removers, not converters. I've tried many different converters in the past and they just don't cut it in my opinion. The only way to effectively deal with rust is to remove it, all your doing with a converter is delaying the inevitable.

A good rust remover is Bilt Hambers Deox Gel. You simply brush it on to the rusty area, cover it with some cling film so it doesn't dry out, and leave it for a period of time whilst agitating it with a wire brush every few hours or so. I usually like to leave it on for 24 hours depending on the severity of the rust.

This is the product -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpsu1q4muhl.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpsu1q4muhl.jpg.html)

Here's a link to some on eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bilt-Hamber-Deox-Gel-Rust-Remover-Gelled-Corrosion-Remover-1000ml-bottle-/181229105982?hash=item2a3218b33e:g:3r4AAOSw1KxXNZk Y

And in action -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/82d439a82de1df25666b85d1baeaaafb_zps420ceb01.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/82d439a82de1df25666b85d1baeaaafb_zps420ceb01.jpg.h tml)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/fa16a052a4987fa3b244223e34c2a324_zps996c336b.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/fa16a052a4987fa3b244223e34c2a324_zps996c336b.jpg.h tml)

When it gets to the above stage you simply wash off the brown/green sludge with some clean water, and then you should be left with a rust free surface on which you can paint -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/f9c4b1ce395b7aea39491856bf1d0d87_zpsa1be95bb.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/f9c4b1ce395b7aea39491856bf1d0d87_zpsa1be95bb.jpg.h tml)

After this is done I like to use Zinc Rich Primer.

Zinc primer has great anti corrosion properties and is also not as porous as regular primer, meaning i can leave something in the primer stage for longer without rust creeping back in. Rust would usually start to form fairly quickly if I were to use regular/acid etch primers for example, as these primers are very porous.

Another benefit of Zinc primer is it will sacrifice its self for minor rust on the metal, essentially killing it off.

Here's a link to the Zinc Primer I use- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zinc-Spray-Primer-for-Steel-Fabrication-500ml-Fast-Drying-Large-Can-3-x-SAS24-/121245416933?hash=item1c3aca3de5:g:8~cAAMXQVERSwzd T

Its cheaper to buy this primer in bulk.

Heres the under arch of my current ZS Zinc Primed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg3_zpszniv18tj.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg3_zpszniv18tj.jpg.html)

I usually apply 2-3 coats.

After that's done I like to use a good quality stone chip/underseal. I use UPOL Gravigard in Aerosol form as it's reasonably priced and gives excellent long term protection.

Here's a link - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U-Pol-Gravigard-Anti-Stonechip-Grey-500ml-/282228003446?hash=item41b6199276:g:yNgAAOSwDk5T7Jz G

You can also buy its sister product UPOL Gravtex for use in an air powered spray gun.

Again, it's much cheaper to buy this stuff in bulk.

I can't stress enough that this has to be layed down in VERY thin coats with sufficient time to dry in between coats. Try to put too much on too quickly and you'll end up with a mess on the floor. Practice makes perfect when it comes to applying the underseal, it's not a job to be rushed. It does say ready to be over painted in 3-4 hours but I'd recommend you leave it for 24 hours to fully cure.

Here's the underarch of the XPG ZS after 2-3 coats of Gravigard -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg1_zpsfbjtossj.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg1_zpsfbjtossj.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/image.jpg2_zps6qtfwoqf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/image.jpg2_zps6qtfwoqf.jpg.html)

That's the main bulk of the rust protection completed. After this I like to apply some correct coloured top coat and some anti corrosion wax to ensure the longevity of the rust protection.

I use Bilt Hambers Dynax UC Wax, it's excellent stuff and easily the best I've used thus far.

Here's a link to the product - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bilt-Hamber-Dynax-UC-Clear-Film-Anti-Corrosion-Wax-750ml-Aerosol-Cavity-Body-/181161005563?hash=item2a2e0991fb:g:LywAAOxygLxSVRx t

For the box sections and cavitys I use Bilt Hambers S-50. Here's a link to some on eBay - http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bilt-Hamber-Dynax-S-50-Extreme-Anti-Corrosion-Wax-750ml-Aerosol-Cavity-Wax-/161081731306?hash=item25813828ea%3Ag%3AujwAAOxyEoF SVRw7&_trkparms=pageci%253A15454ecc-c0c6-11e6-b296-005056bb1875%257Cparentrq%253Af573f6381580a786ccda 0fd5ffd9abfe%257Ciid%253A1

I've learnt that less is more regarding the S-50. After entering the lance into the box section, a smooth even movement will produce a nice thin coat which will then seap into any seams. Apply too much into a box section and you'll just serve to block up drain holes which will cause more issues in the future.

Thats just common sense your probably thinking, but you'd be surprised at how many people I've seen absolutely cake the inside of their cills in wax and then complain that the wax doesn't work when they've had to have cill's replaced later down the line.

Finally, here's a couple of shots of the finished underarch on the XPG ZS with the top coat and wax applied -

Family decided they wanted to get me the Moto-Build springs as an early birthday present as it's at the end of this month, here they are -

That's all the purchased bits, now onto today's progress. Needed to get the dampers refurbished, so wire brushed them back to bare metal -

Just the hubs to sort with new bearings, ball joints and some paint and then she'll be rolling again !

Some more done today.

I decided to give them a proper coat of paint as the e-coat they come in is rubbish.

Sanded down -

Happy with that, I went down to my garage and got those fitted along with the spring and damper assemblies.

Going to find a garage to press the old bearing and ball joints out tomorrow, then I can get the hubs painted up.

Been back at it today.

I took the hubs down to a garage on Friday and had them push the old bearing's and ball joints out. £20 all in which I thought was reasonable. Will be the same again to put the new ones in.

Here are the bare hubs -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1606_zpssdsbu6og.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1606_zpssdsbu6og.jpg.html)

Ive ordered all the new bits I need to get those rebuilt so they'll be here by the weekend hopefully.

The engine's been sitting on a pallet since I removed it from the car but I've also made a start on that today too. Here it is -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1619_zpsnu1twnjp.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1619_zpsnu1twnjp.jpg.html)

Various bits removed ready to be refurbished -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1627_zpsqg5laeqy.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1627_zpsqg5laeqy.jpg.html)

Drive shafts have been marked up so they go back together as they came apart.

As the engine stands now, belts exposed ready to be changed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1625_zpsw7xkhavg.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1625_zpsw7xkhavg.jpg.html)

The guy I bought the car from said the belts had been changed pretty recently and upon closer inspection this appears to be true as they are aftermarket belts. Although they look in good condition it would be unthinkable not to change them and all the other serviceable items whilst I have the engine in this state.

Should be nice and easy to change the belts now it's out too.

There's still a lot more that I want to take off and refurb and the engine needs a damn good degreasing too, but won't be touching this again now until the cars rolling.

Jay.

Bit of a milestone reached today, she's back on all four wheels for the first time in almost four months ! Won't be for long though as I'm going to make a start on the rear tomorrow.

Anyway, here's a few pictures of the process. New bearings and ball joints -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1640_zpsebyt4jgr.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1640_zpsebyt4jgr.jpg.html)

Took them down to my local garage and had those pressed into the hubs -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1642_zpsntlahfij.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1642_zpsntlahfij.jpg.html)

N/S fitted back to the car -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1643_zpsactdtcvu.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1643_zpsactdtcvu.jpg.html)

Same for the O/S -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1645_zpsugipvjlq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1645_zpsugipvjlq.jpg.html)

Popped the wheels and discs back on and rolled her outside into the daylight -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1648_zpstzrufjcp.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1648_zpstzrufjcp.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1647_zpsydhovslv.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1647_zpsydhovslv.jpg.html)

I knocked the knackered outer CV joints off the drive shafts and have pushed those into the drive flanges and nipped up the hub nuts just to keep the bearings together whilst I rolled her about.

Surprising just how little these cars weigh without the engine in. Really noticed it when I tried the wing on, sitting like a monster truck at the front even on the Moto-Build springs.

I had a tidy up/organise of the parts that were lying around, a good sweep round with the broom and then turned her around and pushed her back in ready for me to make a start tomorrow -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1649_zps80mgybip.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1649_zps80mgybip.jpg.html)

Finally, I purchased this little VIS tester machine from a guy over on the ZT & ZTT Owners Club page on Facebook -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1651_zpsrnnv5wcy.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1651_zpsrnnv5wcy.jpg.html)

Can't say I'm a Hugh fan of the MG Facebook pages for various reasons but it does pay to have a scroll through it from time to time.

I'm seriously impressed with this, it's good to know there are people out there in the MG/Rover scene making things like this to such a good quality for our cars.

I've tested both my VIS motors today and both are dead unfortunately, can I get these refurbished or will I have to replace with new ones ?

Jay.

Cheers guys,

Been browsing the net and found a really good guide on YouTube on how to repair the VIS Motors.

Link - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_4NNxnxKugI

Looks like it's a case of oil ingression that ultimately kills them. Simple strip down, clean up of connectors and a bit of fresh solder should see them working again. Will have a crack at this over the next few weeks.

Had a look on dmgrs and found they sell both motors new for £130. Will try and repair mine but if it all goes tits up I may have to bite the bullet :hmm:.

Unfortunately our Pete was the one who would refurb the vis motors for us. I have done them a few times. Normally a bad motor or dry joints on the v3 switches is the cause. soldering iron, solder sucker and an eye glass would suffice.

Had a couple of weeks away from the MG whilst I've been working on another one of my projects. Must say its refreshing to work on something different every now and again but glad to be back at it this weekend !

Dropped all of the rear running gear from the car -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1677_zpswvmzz116.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1677_zpswvmzz116.jpg.html)

I was pricing up new bushes last night as the rears are all perished and the prices for the poly bush alternatives are truly eye watering ! Think I'll poly bush the anti roll bar and link like I did at the front and use genuine MG/Rover replacement rubber bushes everywhere else. I may do the odd track day but I don't think that'll justify me buying poly.

Removed the fuel tank -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1707_zpsw871wqrt.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1707_zpsw871wqrt.jpg.html)

Nice and rusty, the underbody protection on the MK2 cars is seriously poor.

Then got to work on the rear arch. Here's a shot of the O/S before I wire brushed it -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1678_zps4cticvjq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1678_zps4cticvjq.jpg.html)

Wire brushed back to bare metal and then Zinc Primed -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1703_zpseq47di9o.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1703_zpseq47di9o.jpg.html)

It wasn't that bad to be honest but it'll still get the same treatment as the front. I also removed the arch body kit trim as I didn't want to risk catching it with the grinder and damaging it.

Haven't touched the other side or the underneath yet but will make a start on those next weekend.

That was Saturdays progress, Ive invested in some new tools to make my life a bit easier and decided to put them to use today.

Clarke strong arm engine hoist and load leveller won on eBay -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1693_zps6sgbh2fv.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1693_zps6sgbh2fv.jpg.html)

And an engine stand -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1685_zps8n5am0ht.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1685_zps8n5am0ht.jpg.html)

Split the gearbox from the engine -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1687_zpstsqishmv.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1687_zpstsqishmv.jpg.html)

And hoisted the engine up onto the stand -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1688_zpsducytbs1.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1688_zpsducytbs1.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1696_zpsbike2ync.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1696_zpsbike2ync.jpg.html)

I've also bought an air compressor from SGS engineering whilst they're on sale -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1698_zpsraya1ls7.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1698_zpsraya1ls7.jpg.html)

You get a few basic air tools thrown in with it but I'm going to invest in some quality ones. I'm going to use it for spraying mostly, fancy having a go at doing my own painting on this project so will see how it goes.

Also had a play with the dead VIS motors today, opened both units up -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1659_zpsy8wtljgk.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1659_zpsy8wtljgk.jpg.html)

Both were literally swimming in oil so I decided to strip out the internals and clean them up -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1660_zpsiix1nq7b.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1660_zpsiix1nq7b.jpg.html)

Also cleaned up the spindle inside both motors -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1661_zpsyka1osp7.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1661_zpsyka1osp7.jpg.html)

Put them both back together again and managed to get the Power VIS working but the Balance VIS has had it. Weak motor and a dodgy micro switch i think.

Not to worry though, had some luck and stumbled across a guy who had two fully refurbished VIS units from Pete Scott around 3-4 months ago and had never fitted them I believe. Must have been amongst the last he'd done, safe to say I bought those -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1710_zpspk7aipop.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1710_zpspk7aipop.jpg.html)

The guy who I bought the VIS tester off also refurbs them so I'll get my others done and keep them as spares for the future.

Finally, I popped down to my local breakers yard and stripped a complete OEM reverse sensor kit from a Rover 45 -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1709_zpsli7pcrw9.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1709_zpsli7pcrw9.jpg.html)

Will be a nice Edition to the ZS.

reversing kits are useful, my one just emits a buzz when I go into reverse. Think the frost and rain buggers them up.

Did the same last year and I bought some s/h sensors as I thought one of them must have gone. Never got round to fitting them and they must have dried out, as they started working properly when it warmed up.

So here is hoping!!

With my daily being a six speed, the reversing sensor beep on the ZS is a god send as it remonds me the zed is only a 5 speed! Saved the gearbox several times!

Not much progress made this weekend as it took me two days to strip down the rear running gear. Almost all of the bolts where rusted solid in place and many of the heads sheared off upon trying to undo them. I did try the blowtorch and mole grip approach to no avail so ended up welding thicker bolts to what was left of the threads and got them out that way.

Absolute nightmare as doing it that ways extremely time consuming.

Anyway, here's all the bits I've taken down to the powder coaters today -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1738_zpsdroqaajm.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1738_zpsdroqaajm.jpg.html)

There's still the fuel tank, tank straps, rear calipers, gear linkages and some more exhaust shields to be done but they'll go down next week as I'm giving the tank plenty of time to air out before it's blasted and coated.

Another payday and more bits bought, put an order into DMGRS last week for all of the bits I need to sort the engine out, they arrived on Friday, along with the traditional chewy sweet -

Digging those manifolds out reminded me that I've still got to get a new lambda sensor boss welded onto the down pipe and then have it polished up.

Not too sure what cat back system I want yet, there's not too much readily available off the shelf for a 180, and of what there is I don't really fancy a Piper system. By chance I managed to speak to Kevin (aka KevG on here) over on Facebook last night and finally found out what cat back exhaust system my old XPG Saloon has.

Been bugging me for ages as I'd really like to have something similar on my current ZS when the time comes for it, the noise's that system made where something else !

Turns out it's a bespoke system, had an inkling it might be as when I had it off before I couldn't see any brand markings on it, and was made by Meerkat Exhausts up in Kilbirnie. Will give them a phone call over the next few weeks and see if I can't get one made up and sent down to me. Not too sure if that'll work though as they made need the car, but If that fails Kev gave me some details on the system so will look into having something made up locally. Pretty sure there's a Power-flow outlet in Redditch so may go there.

Finally, bought some stainless ZS kickplates which arrived today -

Got a few other bits I'm waiting on, but will put some pictures up of those the weekend.

Any decent bespoke exhaust manufacturer worth their salt should be able to a system to suit your requirements.

reversing kits are useful, my one just emits a buzz when I go into reverse. Think the frost and rain buggers them up.

Did the same last year and I bought some s/h sensors as I thought one of them must have gone. Never got round to fitting them and they must have dried out, as they started working properly when it warmed up.

So here is hoping!!

:):):)

Used to have that problem sometimes with my XPG ZS. Sensors would play up after washing it but were fine if left to dry out for a couple of hours. I ended up taking them all out and sprayed Dynax clear wax over the joint which sorted that issue out a treat.

With my daily being a six speed, the reversing sensor beep on the ZS is a god send as it remonds me the zed is only a 5 speed! Saved the gearbox several times!

Sound like you've had a couple of lucky escapes there then !

That's good to know. I'll be looking into this over the next few weeks !

More progress made this weekend, got 70% of the wire brushing and Zinc priming on the backend finished now. Had to split it down into sections as there's too much to attempt in one sitting, it's a real PITA but worth it in the long run !

Anywho, here's what I've got done. O/S -

Came home the past two nights looking like I'd done a 12 hour shift down in the coal mines  ! Still have the middle cross member, heel board and seat pan/undertank area to do. Should be able to get that done over next weekend. I'm not going to touch the spare wheel well as that's all in A1 condition there.

Collected my parts from the powder coaters -

And had a few more bits arrive through the post. Needed to replace my side skirts as the metal brackets that attach them to the car had turned to dust and in the process made the plastic in the area they were bonded to bulge out, ruining the skirt.

Purchased some used ones from eBay with the much improved plastic brackets -

Just the one day in the garage this weekend as I've been busy of late.

Managed to get the wire brushing and Zinc priming on the underside finished off -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1807_zpsbdlnki1h.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1807_zpsbdlnki1h.jpg.html)

That's taken me far too long to complete but glad it's now finished.

Decided to strip the oil cooler down to see what condition it was in, here it is in all its oily glory -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1773_zpsflwqgopf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1773_zpsflwqgopf.jpg.html)

And stripped down to its individual components -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1775_zpsi0u2rcz3.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1775_zpsi0u2rcz3.jpg.html)

Apart from a bit of crystallising coolant inside it's all in excellent condition surprisingly enough. Decided to give it a clean up in the parts washer, I left the nozzle running over the cooling element for a while to make sure there was no old oil left inside of it -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1780_zpszyf3sexd.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1780_zpszyf3sexd.jpg.html)

I blasted compressed air through all of the oil galleries to make sure they were all clear too.

All clean -

And back together -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1782_zpscqrjg9hm.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1782_zpscqrjg9hm.jpg.html)

Would have liked some new gaskets buts can't seem to find any. Will see how it goes and if it leaks in the future I'll have to sort something out.

I also picked these up last weekend -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1796_zpsilcqe8il.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1796_zpsilcqe8il.jpg.html)

I was pretty content with those but on Friday I happened across these -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1793_zpsdx2q9uwi.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1793_zpsdx2q9uwi.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1794_zpsbtlxszhu.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1794_zpsbtlxszhu.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1795_zpsinttugfi.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1795_zpsinttugfi.jpg.html)

Decided to move the grey ones on and go with the red instead. I was initially looking for a full set of ZS leathers as the Alcantara seats aren't the easiest to maintain, but they're few and far between. The Grey Alcantara's were bought for me to put away and use as and when I needed as I was going to go with some bucket seats and have no rear seats at all.

I think I may now ditch the idea of buckets as I think the red monogram Alcantara's will look excellent against the firefrost red paint.

The drivers seat has a small hole in the bolster and the seat base is a touch saggy so I stripped the seat down and took the covers up to my local upholsterers to be repaired -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1799_zpsxhlxlhdt.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1799_zpsxhlxlhdt.jpg.html)

Should have those back in a week or two.

Be a showstopper when you're done mate. Good stuff.

Not sure about red in red personally. Think I'd have stuck with gunsmoke, but if they work for you that's all that matters.

Very interesting seeing the oil cooler stripped down, not seen that before. I personally like the red on red, think the seats will go nicely.
Are you replacing the hoses on the oil cooler? they went on the first track zs on here iirc and ended up with a seized engine.

I like the red ones, I have red Alcantara buckets in my maestro (although they have faded quite a bit), I also like the gun smoke, have it in the ZS and the F (although I'd like green in the F) and I like the blue we have in the ZR.

Ive never stripped an oil cooler down before this one so wasn't quite sure what to expect myself. Strange looking bit of kit !

My thinking exactly concerning the seats, will see how it goes.

The rubber pipes are in good condition but the metal tubes are a bit crusty. I may give those a wire brush and see what they're like, haven't had a look for replacements so I'm unsure whether you can buy them of not.

Sounds like you have a nice collection of Alcantara's there !

I've seen plenty of Alcanatara sets for the ZT's and F/TF's and they're a reasonable amount of money, the ZS sets on the other hand seem to be well overpriced in my opinion.

Looking good Jay :)

Cheers Matt.

looking good - I'm not a big fan of red on interiors (put me off the BRM entirely) but I think those Alcantara's would look lovely in yours once it is done - just the right balance of red to more sober colours..

Hi bud,

I'm using aerosols for the underneath, I find if you bulk buy you save quite alot. I've had all the aerosol paint I need sitting in the garage for a while now ready for when I need to use it. I think aerosols are fine for underneath as I'm not particularly worried about the finish, just as long as it's rust proof and tidy im happy. Nice even thin coats and you should be fine, got the whole N/S underarch top coat done with one 500ml aerosol of Firefrost if that gives you an idea on coverage.

I have a compressor and I'm slowly stocking up on the bits I'll need for when I paint the body panels, mixing pots, mixing sticks, tack rags, different coarse's of sand paper etc...

I popped in to jewal paints last weekend to get some advice on bits I'll be needing and the guy was very knowledgeable, printed me out a list of bits ill need and I've got my order of paint, primer, lacquer, thinners and hardner on stand by. For a litre of quality CEV Firefrost is almost £80 so if you look at it like that the aerosols arnt bad value for money.

I've bought a quality paint gun, quality air lines and moisture trap/air filter from SGS so I should be sorted on that front. This is where I want the paint to look really good so I don't mind spending that bit more to make sure of it.

Ok guys, here's what I've got done over the last few weeks.

Seam sealed where necessary -

Left that to go off for 24h and then Gravigard stone chipped the underside -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1900_zpsdeud4aoz.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1900_zpsdeud4aoz.jpg.html)

I had a small issue with some light cracking appearing in the Gravigard which is probably down to the length of time I left the underside in the primer stage before applying the stonechip. Was probably around 2 weeks. In my experience the quicker you can get the stone chip on after primer the better as it provides a better key for it to stick.

Left that to go off for a few hours and then I started to apply some Firefrost top coat -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1915_zps0ddfgs7b.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1915_zps0ddfgs7b.jpg.html)

Unfortunately I ran out of paint at this point. Thought I had more than enough to complete this job but obviously not ! Will get some ordered and finish this off. Then it's just the lacquer and clear wax and the underside will be finished.

Got my drivers side seat covers back from the upholsterers and decided to get my de-bobbler machine out as the Alcantara was starting to look its age. This is the machine -

And here's all the bobbles and excess material that it removed from the seats -

I lost the X-Power branding on the end of the tail pipes but I couldn't of done the job properly without doing so unfortunately. One of those things I guess.

I now have the complete Janspeed system front to back. Has cost quite a bit and have travelled half way around the country but will all be worth it when it's bolted onto the car -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1923_zpslq7krjq4.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1923_zpslq7krjq4.jpg.html)

Have the centre pipe and y piece still to do but that will be for another day.

Finally, I bought the sliding arm rest from a Jaguar X-Type which I'm going to retro fit into the ZS. It's a far superior item compared to the standard ZS arm rest -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1936_zpsi5bgwawm.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1936_zpsi5bgwawm.jpg.html)

I do believe it's all in the details so this should be a nice edition to the car.

Anyway, I'm off down the coast tomorrow for the rest of the week for a break so won't be working on the car until Sunday.

Hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday and also POL if you attended, I did and was great to see plenty of ZS's there !

Jay.

Cheers bud,

Yeh it's a great bit of kit, used it on around four sets of seats now and it still works perfectly. Caught a glimpse of your 45 at POL, looked damn good !

Edit: Ignore that last part, got you confused with someone else !

Got quite a bit done over the last couple of weeks. I'll start with the engine.

Here it is on the stand in all it's oily glory, I've stripped off most bits for cleaning -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1979_zpsgg5xxp4z.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1979_zpsgg5xxp4z.jpg.html)

You can see the 'V' is full of muck and there's also evidence of a possible leaky thermostat -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1977_zpsxr3fvznj.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1977_zpsxr3fvznj.jpg.html)

Gave the whole thing a good degreasing and then set the engine to the 'Safe' position and locked off the fly wheel. With that done I removed the thermostat, the old belt, pulleys and the water pump -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1992_zpsjb1zalzy.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1992_zpsjb1zalzy.jpg.html)

I've been over how I done the front belt on the XPG ZS without the service tools in a previous thread so I won't go over it again in this thread. Here's the engine with the new belt, pulleys and water pump fitted -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1995_zpsai2tvy8z.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1995_zpsai2tvy8z.jpg.html)

Then it was onto the rears. These are easy peasy to change !

With the engine still in the 'Safe' position, I marked the exhaust cam pulley, the old belt and the plastic housing case with grey paint so all the individual markings lined up. I also did the same for the inlet cam pulley. This gives me a datum point for when I fit the new belt -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2003_zpsabdisbr2.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2003_zpsabdisbr2.jpg.html)

In the above photo you can also see I marked the inlet pulley and the centre pulley bolt with grey paint. I'll explain why later on in the post.

With those marked up I then removed the inlet cam pulley along with the old belt, (this is the opposite side as I forgot to take a picture) -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2001_zpsweh0mosw.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2001_zpsweh0mosw.jpg.html)

The exhaust cam pulley doesn't need to be removed.

Upon removing the inlet cam pulley and the old belt the exhaust cam pulley sprung forward around 3 teeth. This is where the markings on the pulley and the casing become invaluable as it will allow me to line everything back up later on.

There's no need to worry about the inlet cam moving though as the locked flywheel and the front belt won't allow it to.

With those off I marked up the new belt with grey paint to match the old one. There's no real reason for marking the belt but it just allows me to be certain all the markings line up when fitted back onto the engine -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1999_zps4p0pxz4o.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1999_zps4p0pxz4o.jpg.html)

Then it was onto the re-fitting, this is where you need a friend or in my case, my dad showed up ! Firstly I fitted the new belt over the exhaust cam pulley and lined up the marking on the pulley with the marking on the belt. Then I had my dad turn the exhaust cam pulley back 3 teeth using a socket on a long bar and ratchet until the markings on the pulley and the belt lined up with the markings on the casing.

With those being held in position it was just a case of lining up the marks on the inlet cam pulley and the belt and then sliding that assembly up into its position until the inlet cam pulley popped into its woodruff key on the inlet cam -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2005_zpsi5olcuiq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2005_zpsi5olcuiq.jpg.html)

Further up in the thread I mentioned i marked the camshaft pulley bolt and the inlet cam pulley. The reason why is when you refit the pulley bolt it requires you to torque it up to 27nm and then a further 90 degrees. Having made the marks earlier all you have to do is torque it up and then tighten it until the markings line up.

Here's the other side done too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2006_zpsp4gpb1ri.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2006_zpsp4gpb1ri.jpg.html)

Hopefully that all makes sense. It's a lot easier than I may have made it sound and literally only takes around 10-15 minutes to change both belts.

Happy with the belts I than fitted the new thermostat and coolant plug -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2008_zpsqlvwy0n3.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2008_zpsqlvwy0n3.jpg.html)

I also refitted the intake assemble with new gaskets and O-Rings and my refurbished VIS motors. I degreased all of the ancillaries and bolted those back on too with a new auxiliary belt.

Nothing too fancy and I didn't paint anything up either as that's the beauty with these modern engines, nothing's really seen when the engines back in and what is seen is usually covered with a plastic cover anyway !

Heres the engine pretty much ready to go back in, just need a new clutch, new coil packs, a set of new plugs and some manifold gaskets which will be ordered this evening ready for next weekend -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2070_zpsrsln6ch4.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2070_zpsrsln6ch4.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2071_zpsfoibxkeg.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2071_zpsfoibxkeg.jpg.html)

That's all the progress on the engine up to this point. Now it's onto the body and running gear.

CONTINUED IN A SECOND POST....

CONTINUED FROM THE ABOVE POST...

Here's all the bits I've bought including new bushes, dampers and replacement stainless steel bolts etc -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2015_zpsskqse6au.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2015_zpsskqse6au.jpg.html)

Gave the dampers a quick keying over and a couple of coats of satin black as the E-Coat they come in isn't the best -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2050_zpsemess3j7.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2050_zpsemess3j7.jpg.html)

And got those built up with the springs -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2052_zpsg8af91lf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2052_zpsg8af91lf.jpg.html)

Pushed the new bushes into the arms using my 6 tonne press -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2021_zps8fe4t4jt.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2021_zps8fe4t4jt.jpg.html)

And got those built up along with the swing arms -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2054_zpsb8611iz8.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2054_zpsb8611iz8.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2057_zps3urxlhze.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2057_zps3urxlhze.jpg.html)

Then I began bolting those back onto the car, starting with the dampers and arms -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2053_zpslzbjkeaj.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2053_zpslzbjkeaj.jpg.html)

The O-Ring on the damper is easily overlooked when fitting, wasn't any on mine when I removed them originally. It serves to stop the muck and water getting into your boot.

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2055_zpscfshaooh.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2055_zpscfshaooh.jpg.html)

Next up was the swing arm and the ARB. I don't have the bushes for the ARB yet so it's just resting in place for the moment -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2061_zpsuaqt9etq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2061_zpsuaqt9etq.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2060_zpsdrde9afv.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2060_zpsdrde9afv.jpg.html)

Decided to mock up the larger Janspeed backbox from my Duplex system to get an idea of how it will look -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2063_zpsa35k5h94.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2063_zpsa35k5h94.jpg.html)

Amazing !

Finally, I've now built up my rear calipers too -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_1784_zpsxls8daxe.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_1784_zpsxls8daxe.jpg.html)

Thought it about time I do an update as I haven't done one in a small while.

Got a fair bit done over the last few weeks, I'll get the purchased bits and pieces out of the way first.

Various exhaust and manifold gaskets -

Outer CV joints -

Discs and pads -

Some high tensile steel bolts to replace some of the stainless ones -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2098_zpslqbut3li.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2098_zpslqbut3li.jpg.html)

PPD Rear arch liner and a small metal heat guard that goes under the inlet manifold that was missing from mine -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2157_zpshroudkm5.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2157_zpshroudkm5.jpg.html)

Managed to pick up an Xpower gear knob, this proved quite difficult to find -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2196_zpsolzlggjm.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2196_zpsolzlggjm.jpg.html)

Finally had the downpipe repaired by Powerflow so I got that polished up -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2116_zpsuudiezpo.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2116_zpsuudiezpo.jpg.html)

And new Poly and Nylatron bushes to rebuild my powder coated gear linkage -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2156_zpshunl5kpq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2156_zpshunl5kpq.jpg.html)

I think that covers everything but I may have missed a few bits and pieces !

May as well start with the gear linkage.

Had quite a lot of excess powder coat in the hole which wouldn't allow me to fit the new bushes -

So got my Dremel out and used a course sanding belt to remove the powder coat -

Did the same thing for the other side too.

Decided to get the engine and box back in next, got the clutch fitted and aligned and also fitted the new coil packs, plugs and oil filter -

Still have a lot I want to do with the engine bay but that'll have to wait for the time being.

Next I fitted the calipers, disks and pads, braided hose and the handbrake cables -

Continued...

Onto the fuel tank, I had it blasted which revealed a few pin holes which I had to repair with the welder. Came out well enough though -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2206_zpsnnrp2alf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2206_zpsnnrp2alf.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2207_zpsdk9bzrob.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2207_zpsdk9bzrob.jpg.html)

I had a fuel tank sealing kit left over from a previous project so I decided to put it to good use -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2200_zpse3irdnx4.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2200_zpse3irdnx4.jpg.html)

Diluted the degreaser down with some boiling water and put that in -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2202_zps1lrimgbu.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2202_zps1lrimgbu.jpg.html)

Left that to soak for a while then rinsed it out. Here's the inside after I used the metal prep which removes rust and puts a Zinc coating inside the tank -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2208_zps6rwgtspr.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2208_zps6rwgtspr.jpg.html)

And then the sealer went in. It essentially creates a tank within your existing tank. Just a case of tipping it in, moving the tank around until you cover the entire inside surface and then tipping out the excess. Here it is -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2212_zpsabfg3j6i.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2212_zpsabfg3j6i.jpg.html)

It takes 96 hours to fully cure.

I stuck the rubber pads back onto the tank and then mounted that back onto the car using new stainless threaded bar that I put a 90 degree bend in and stainless nuts and bolts -

I also removed the carpet and gave it a good clean as it smelled like the previous owners dog -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2143_zpszqocmwtf.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2143_zpszqocmwtf.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2144_zpsibejaunr.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2144_zpsibejaunr.jpg.html)

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2154_zps9wsmgjrq.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2154_zps9wsmgjrq.jpg.html)

Fitted that back into the car -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2161_zpszjhi4ghk.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2161_zpszjhi4ghk.jpg.html)

Here's how the car currently stands, I can finally drive it in and out of the garage instead of pushing it -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2175_zpsgk0heg5u.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2175_zpsgk0heg5u.jpg.html)

Still a long way off seeing the road but the mechanical side of things is almost complete.

Finally, I had to repair the plastic brackets which secure the abs wires. The bolts had rusted solid in the fixings so I pushed them out -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2216_zpsrinjiqtp.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2216_zpsrinjiqtp.jpg.html)

Enlarged the hole with an 8mm drill bit -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2221_zpszejavzwx.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2221_zpszejavzwx.jpg.html)

Fitted an aluminium M6 rivnut -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2222_zpsbdxid7af.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2222_zpsbdxid7af.jpg.html)

And ground the heads down flat using my power file -

http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab106/jaybcfc/IMG_2230_zpsi1lghcn0.jpg (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/jaybcfc/media/IMG_2230_zpsi1lghcn0.jpg.html)

Good as new !

Still have a few more bits to finish off underneath but as soon as that's done I'll be moving onto the exterior paint work as this needs some serious attention !

Jay.

Great idea with the riv nut in the sensor holders. I had the same problem with mine. Had I not got some new ones from rimmers I would have copied your idea.

Cheers bud,

Was a satisfying repair and saved a fair chunk of money in the process, win win !

Hi guys,

Can’t quite believe it’s been well over a year since my last update. I’m sure you know how it is, life gets in the way and all that...

I’ll be looking to get a sizeable update up towards the end of the month !

Been through a lot with the ZS including swapping out the Red Alcantara seats for full Monaco Leathers as the Alcantara were becoming a pain to keep in tip top condition.

She’s also had a brand new old stock gear box fitted and another new clutch as the last one I fitted only lasted a few thousand miles before it decided it didn’t want to be a clutch no longer.

I’ve also retrimmed the whole headlining in black micro suede too which looks amazing.

There’s also much much more including an inlet manifold replacement.

Until then, thanks for reading,

Jay.
