I am thinking of changing the front speakers but would like to know if anybody else has done it. Can you get direct replacement speakers?

I was thinking of getting some new ones like didn't know which ones to get thou?

Not too sure about direct replacement ones, but if you are going to change / replace them might as well upgrade for the costs I would have thought.

the ZEds door are dead shallow i think you have to buy some sort of adaptor to push the speaker out a bit

i replaced all of mine when i had a zs i didnt us a spacer but there used to be a template on here for a spacer they need to be shallow as well so not to hit the window as it comes down i can look in the shed at the weekend to find which ones i used if i still have the box as they are in the rear of my st think they were infinities they do sound good but i do have 2 amps and also 2 subs in my set up now

oh biggest thing is removing the little plastic bit on the door open handel to remove remove screw and pull or push the whole unit(can't remember which was left or right) and when its free push the top of the clipover the wire behind and slide off dont force it or try and pull it about as they break very easy and are a pain with out it as they do pop off and you have to use the out side handle to ge out....

okay....it really depends what sort of price you are looking for your new speakers? Vibe are a happy medium (and i use them) they sound fine and don't cost a fortune, but obv the more you spend...the more you get.
I wouldn't worry to much about magnet depth tbh....there is loads of room infront of the cone to space the speakers out as far as you need! i made up spacers from work...but a load of washers would do exactly the same job!
its a shame your a fair distance away....one morning and i could sort you out completely.....?
Give me a rough price what you want to spend on speakers and i'll point you in the right direction ;)

What about the tweeters behind the mirrors? just unplug them or can you swap them easily enough?

chriszs180

they swap very easy just do it at the same time mine needed trimming a little to sit nice and flush

I made my own spacers using some 18mm MDF, just use your original speakers as a guide and draw around them and then cut out the centre hole depending on the size of the new replacement speakers. But if there are some fitting spacers on the market that will fit then you could easily just buy some of these :)

I'm running 17cm JBL's in the fronts on mine and 13cm Pioneers in the rears, JBL's cost me about £45(normal cost £70ish) and the Pioneers were around £30(normal £40ish)

is it worth sound proofing the door cards. when i have my standards up loud there is a vibrating noise (not distorting) im not sure if its the door card or the speakers

so i take it 17cm speakers are the size to buy and they will fit straight into mini speaker spacers? would be good to see a pic of some fiited. (i have just been looking on ebay and it seems there is 2 different sizes, some are selling 130mm and others 165mm???)

michaelb
18-12-08, 02:28 PM
yes the ZS takes 17in speakers so those are the correct ones.

Same here. I brought some BMW MINI Adaptors from ebay, had to remove some material in the middle to make the speakers fit... then had to file down the back of the adaptors to make them thinner... otherwise the door cards don't fit properly back onto the door!

you need the trim removal tools otherwise you just end up breaking the clips that hold the card to the door.

you did take out the screws aswell didn't you

Yep, removed all the screws then tried to gingerly pull at the bottom as described on here....then tried a bit harder.

Then gave up before I borked it.

remove all the screws like before (1 in the door pull,2 in the handle,1 in the door card)
But don't pull from the bottom, start at one side & work your way around.
Don't forget the inner door pull slides to one side before coming out. Also be careful not to break the clip that holds the inner door pull to the bar.

To be honest... I don't own either... never needed to actually use them! apart from once when I had to remove a 2 ton concrete girder from my kitchen...

Can I go off topic and ask how on earth a two ton concrete girder ended up in your kitchen?

lmao... err well you see I removed the Coal Store and brick Larder from my kitchen and that is what was above them... it probably wasn't 2 ton, but it wasn't half heavy thought it would crack the foundations when it dropped out... We asked my Grandad (he's an architect\buildings inspector) and he said it wasn't doing anything, so then it went onto back of lorry and got taken away... took four of us to lift it onto the flat bed, which dropped about 2 inches on its suspension... Considering its weight it wasn't held up by much (half a brick on either end was all that supported it)
