I have now fitted my new front speakers and am looking to replace the rear ones, has anybody else replaced the rear speakers in a saloon? i am after some that will just fit into the original space.

i got some alpines from halfords last year dont know if they still do them sxe-1725s is what they are its the best £40 i,ve spent they handle the bass real well i think they are 16cm in the rear but dont quote me on that but these alpines fitted stright in to the orignal holes in the shelf oh and mine is the saloon . How did you find fitting the front ones i,ve been told there a pain to fit and there isnt much out there to better the front oe speakers as your limited to what you can put in there thats was coming from a ice specialist near me he was saying the best way to improve the sound was to stick with the oe fronts change the rear and amp and sub in the boot but it worked out mega money he wanted thats why i just went for the rears from halfords and like i said big improvement dont no what to do about the fronts though dont know if spending out on fronts is gona be worth it if there aint gonna be that much difference from the oe ones

i have fitted reference infinity 13cm in the front using autoleads speaker adaptor SAK-1207(it is to fit the BMW mini but it is a direct fit for the zs). there is not a lot of spare wire available in the front so it is easier to solder some speaker wire to the speakers and use spade connectors or something similar to connect to the original car wire, then if you ever come to sell the car they will be easier to remove, but be careful as the original car speaker wires are in doubles because of the tweeters (dont get the colours mixed up!) its not a hard job, just a bit fiddly because they are right in the front corner of the doors and there is not a lot of room to work. one thing i have notoced though is that i think it is worth soundproofing the door as the new speakers are just going straight into open metal door space and some off the bass is being lost in it, this is something i am currently looking into. still a huge improvement in sound though.

what did you use to fasten them in place? bolts or summut?

I had mine changed to Focal Access 165 CA1's. Dynomat in the boot too, by a specialist in Bishops Stortford, Herts.

They go straight in and the difference was amazing.

did you amp them or just run them from the head unit???

They were wired straight in, no extra cutting. Dynamat underneath. I'm no expert, but apparantly this forces the sound back into the cabin.

Seriously good speakers, mated to the standard Kenwood head unit. HUGE improvement.

When you say dynamat underneath do you mean you have put it on the rear shelf for the speakers to sit on or you have lined the boot?

The speakers were mounted on the rear shelf, with dynamat then fitted under the speakers preventing the loss of sound down through the shelf into the boot, and forcing it all to go up and into the cabin.

Similar answer to which I posted for 'front speakers', but I found a sony replacement speaker by taking out my old one and taking it to a car audio shop and asking them to match it. Got a pair of sony x - plods for the back but backed them up with a sub and amp from motorworld (cost 80 quid) 800 amp n 10",' rollin!!!; the only problem I had was with the speaker grilles...had to put them back on with double sided tape, apart from that no probs.
