Those are tidy. Slightly different to the standard wheel that was in my mk2, in the way that those ones there have swellings for your thumbs, my old one didnt. Got Smokeys old TF wheel now though and the shape is very similar to that picture. Very easy to fit.

How easy is it?

Really easy m8 just disconnect the battery for 20mins then un do the 2 torques bolts on the back and remove the airbag then its just like changing a normal steering wheel

I've bought one, what size is the main steering wheel bolt? 20 minutes to let the charge in the airbag go, I pressume?

p_b82
28-01-09, 10:04 AM
mine turned up this morning while i was in the shower

Haynes does not say what the size of the bolt is, but it mentions 10mins for SRS to loose its charge.. 20mins seems like a cunning plan tho :)

Same size as the original but much better feel to it.

Now on the lookout for an MG Airbag.

It looks exactly the same as the wheel in my mk ZS, but the one in my car now has gone all shiny really and doesn't feel like a grippy leather wheel. Have those new ones got a nice grippy feel to them?

all my airbags needs re-doing next year anyway, so will refit the old module for now and get the lot done in 2010...

yeah it is a lot less slippery than the plastic one i have on atm...

admittedly my testing has been holdng it in my hands and pretending, as my car is no where near me to swap them over :D

Why do the airbags need doing? They are 15 years for replacement, unless you have a fault.

Mine should be here soon, bit worried about the airbag giving me one in the face though. :yikes: Is it really as simple as everyone says, and how does the airbag go back into the new wheel?

Craig
30-01-09, 09:59 PM
so simple mate.

Park the car with the roadwheels dead ahead, Discon battery for 20 mins just to be safe and let the airbag charge dissipate. undo the 2 torx bolts torx 30 or 35 iirc. Lift off the bag. gently prise off the yellow connector, remove the black plug, careful to keep the rotary coupler in the same position. Undo the 19mm bolt for the wheel, sometimes easier to loosen it off a couple of turns then pull the wheel till it frees, saves getting a wheel in the face :D

Then reverse the steps and roberts your mothers brother

Hopefully it'll be simple then. Fingers crossed!

it honestly took me no more than 10 mins once the airbag charge had gone

I managed to fit a TF wheel on my own mate and Im a complete nutcase. I will admit I handled the airbag like a case of high explosives though :pirate:

Which end of the yellow plug do I undo? I've tried to unplug the end in the wheel but it won't budge and I'm s****ing myself it's gonna go off. Should I undo the end on the back of the airbag? HELP!

I was like that 1st time I fitted a new wheel too. Only takes me 10 minutes now, not including the time for the bag to dissipate
