I eventually got the go ahead for a new project from the 'longhaired general' Our vvc mgf has been onthe drive with no mot for an age and ive been threatening to do something with it for ages.

So with some help I had the subframe and engine out and ive just bought this on ebay to put it all in.

rover 100, soon to be a rover 118vvc!

Talon are a good resource for thier conversion parts, Intention is to use some of thier prefabricated parts to keep the quality of the conversion up.

Should be a bit of sleeper when complete:yes:

They were only going .org as temp measure but its maybe perminant! If you need any parts I have individulising nuts for Suspension (for lowering and stiffening), roll cage ARB's all hard to come by these days! So PM if you need any bits!

martyzs
07-06-09, 07:39 AM
I picked it up for just over 300 quid, its a rollcentre cage. They dont seem to come up for sale that often so I jumped on this one as soon as I saw it.

Wow, that is alot, but then I am out of touch on second hand cages these days. The last one I bought was for my Chevette and that was a Safety Devices one, cost me around £50 IIRC! Wouldn't be that today as they are not so common!

martyzs
07-06-09, 11:08 AM
I was suprised at how expensive they were second hand. I was originally under the impression I'd be able to pick one up for half that.

The merto roll cages are getting very rare especially FIA cages! However that looks mint I will watch this project with great eagerness makes me want to pu the time and money back into my metro again

Had a couple of hours today to make some progress with the metro. I removed the engine loom, cooling system, exhaust etc and bar brake lines and hydogas im pretty much ready to drop the subframe.

I striped the interior, checked for rust and dry fitted the cage. It went in with a bit of dash modification, I just need to make some plates up to bolt through now.

Should have the subframe out one night this week. Ive got a brm box which ive painted up ready to fit to the mgf frame but theres a concern over ratio's and how short the box will feel, we'll see what happens.

took a couple of pics

Course ill take you out mate, Hopefully it'll shift!

Bit more done tonight with a small disaster.

Myself Andy and another mate Stevie were lowering the tro down this evening with trolley jacks, Stevie failed to notice the scissor jack under the drivers floor pan and sent it through the floor!

whoops! It did however reveal the rotton sill which gave way and showed us its true fibreglass colours! Its been glassed up and then waxoyled over underneath, so theres some welding to be done but im not too upset. I knew it looked too good to be true.

Anyway, tonights progress was good,

bit more progress today, as the subframes out its an ideal oppurtunity to sort the engine bay out, so I managed to squeeze the mgf radiator in with a bit of modification. The original 1.1 effort really wouldn't have been up taking any abuse.

Picked up a clutch kit this morning in preperation for this weekends gearbox change and subframe modification.

martyzs
24-06-09, 08:53 PM
It will be Mick, I've decided to fit a couple of slimfit kenlowe fans. I just cant stand having the constant fear of an overheating failure, so im going belt and braces with this setup.

Engine and subframe dry fitted. Come up against an issue with the drivers engine mount which needs some modification to gain a suitable clearance from the inner arch, headlight and drivers side wheel.

Next is to get convert the drivetrain components, lower arms, connect steering rack etc so it'll become a rolling shell again. Engine will then come out for its new gearbox.

looks like your making good progress there marty. the exhaust manifold must nearly be touching the radiator lol

vinny1979

the engine mount was a part easily available on the tro' forums a few years ago as its a simple swap as your aware. I bought a safety devices 6 point cage for £100 for my metro back in 2002 from drew r roverdose. Was brand spanker. Ahh they were the days!

lol. what you have to remember is the metro gti 16v ( 1.4 k series) is identical in its outer form to the vvc engine. So yes very tight fit, but an animal.

just dont crash it . not pretty and not much chance:hbd:

plenty more done over the week with a couple of half days off.

Engine came off the subframe and out of the bay. Subframe got painted up and the engine bay resprayed.

MGF Gearbox came off and a new clutch, lightened flywheel and brm torsen diff box went on.

Fitted up all the lower arms etc to the subframe. Swapped some mounts around from the mgf and metro frames so the engine could mount nicely without fouling anything, then lowered back in the motor and box.

Not easy on your own, bit of swearing and skinned knuckles.

Hooked up the steering rack and put some wheels on it today so i could finally push it out the driveway. Now I can clearup the bombsite which has been created by metro and mgf parts in the front garden!

Nieghbours commented it looked like steptoes yard lol!

Also got a bargain on a brand new Cobra monaco, just need a harness now.

bit of an update on this. Been working on it when I've had the time (usually fairly late in the evening due to work!) lots of pics of everything thats been done.

Its moved under its own steam for the first time in months, needs to go to the welders to get the modified gear linkage and rollcage plates welded in.

It runs though and just needs the suspension pumping up and brakes bled before heading down the road to the welders.

Spec so far:

Stripped rover 100 1.1 shell
143 vvc on mgf modified subframe
BRM type B lsd gearbox
ptp lightened flyweel
Modified rover 25gti gearlinkage
GTI exhaust downpipe
MGF Radiator and fan
MGF Vented discs and calipers
Metro GTI Wheels with Dunlop d8 rubber (road) and Avon acb10s for the track
MGF Rear hydro cans on the front with shocks and topmounts (to be welded)
Metro GTI rear hydro cans with lowered pins, individualised all round
OMP Steering wheel
Rollcentre 6 point cage
TRS Harness
Cobra Reclining bucket seat

lots still to do but its getting there!

Bit more done now

Car runs (lumpy though!) Ive taken it round the block a couple of times making sure alls as it should. Needs new plugs and a new starter motor. to make it right

Decatted it and finished off tidying the engine bay. Individualised the suspeension. The cage is completley ready to bolt in, shame its raining tonight as I'd have been out there doing it.
