just to prove that the 180 DOES suffer from heat soak me and matt reid played around with the air filter on the rollers. we compared an induction kit in the wing (open cone) and what would have been an induction kit located in the engine bay (again open cone) and with the filter in the engine bay it lost 4bhp over the filter located in the wing. so to all the owners that have a filter in the engine bay.... PUT IT IN THE WING!

i thought it would suffer but to loose 4 bhp was quite a shock. Reidy also reckons for the people that are running open cones in the wing (like i am) we should run a CAF to the filter from underneath the car.

how would a cold air feed to an open cone work? just put the end of the pipe near the cone and air will run through it directly onto the cone?

or does the cone need to be enclosed to benefit from the cold air feed?

no just put the end near the filter, it will chanel abit more air to it/directly on to it. the air gets in to the wing through the gaps around the arch liner, but there is no direct air route in there. we put the fan directly on to the corner of the bumper and the amont of air that gets in to there isnt great. no the cone doesnt need to be enclosed.

This is where I think the MK2 get better gains as ive noticed a very slight increase since fitting the bumper as theres the two grills at the side so my cone is just behind that and course theres loads of cold air then :) Surprised it was that much mind! They reckon theres only a 10bhp increase anyway!

This is why I say ensure the cold air feed is optimised! Mine is using the nearside foglight aperture, the only available space at present and gulping in cooler air at that level. For sure that is why mine is good for 200.

I still need a gash bumper for R&D purposes ;)

it there more air from the fog light apature than directly below, just underneath the fromt spoiler. i thought about taking mine from there, and maybe using one of the bolt holes that hold the black undertray on as a support bolt.

I thought having it that low would be a bad idea, due to possible water scoopage purposes...

I use the same as Mick and use the fog light aperture (never use the bloody things anyway) and get the ram affect by doing this. I just take it easy in heavy rain so I don't suck water up :D

I wouldnt suck water in to the filter directly as it isnt enclosed induction kit. for an enclosed filter that sucks its air through the CAF it wouldnt be a good idea, but mine been just a CAF it wouldnt be sucking air, it wouldnt be relying on air been sucked in, more like the air been forced in to the inner wing area. i was thinking of leaving the end a couple of inches away from the open cone.

when Matt had his RR day a month back, there was a 160 ZR with a slightly dodgy intake setup that lost 15bhp - slight bit of fettling and it was back up to 160 again.

I am trying to decide where to move my cone to... diesels really really really hate water lol

but i occsionally use mine. your forgetting i live very close to the twisty roads of the new forest!!!..... they come in very hand at night when your out on a spirited drive! :p

I've never ever found a use for foglights, seriously. Even when it's mentally foggy, they do sod all.

Plus you'll still have one left :p

In the time mine has been located to the foglight aperture it has never been an issue, filter has been clean as a whistle and no water ingress. The mesh I use stops water getting in, granted it would be better if open but not worth the grief it could cause. What it needs is a switchable gate, meshed/open to suit weather and driving conditions. :hmmm: now there's a thought!

If mine had been open and towards the front and bottom of the car I don't think I would have survived Sunday's drive without the risk of hydraulicing my engine. Must have been an inch of standing water on the M6 and I was very pleased mine was located high up.

i need to take a picture of what ive done for my cold air feed to show you all, ive cut a hole in the undertray, the part that comes up slightly vertically in the air stream kind of, and put a ram air feed into that then ducting going right up to under the filter, made quite a big difference on the motorway i have to say, il try get some pics up soon to show you all:D
