Now joined the ZS group myself :)

My miss's has a Trophy Blue MK1 120

I've just swapped my 03 plate ZR Turbo petrol for an 05 Plate Ignition blue MK2 Diesel +

I'm not 110% i've made the right decision as theirs a few niggles annoying me but the deal is done and i'm home in my new car.

First mod i've done is remove all the excess badges and removed the MGZS brake light sticker. I've fitted my stereo (which was a RIGHT ball ache, theirs NO room behind the head unit at all!) really not looking forward to fitting an amp wiring kit (if i even bother) as i've got a Pioneer 200W flat subwoofer

I drove 3hrs back from picking her up so she's desperate for a wash and polish before i whip out my camera and take a few snaps

The alloys aren't in the best of states so i'm either going to go down the DIY repair route or get them sandblasted and powdercoated

Well .... Not exactly the sort of first post as an owner I was expecting. Never a good thing if you buy something and then regret it before you get home !

Hopefully she'll grow on you ... if not ... having tagged along behind Pete's yellow peril diesel at Brands a few weeks ago, I could be persuaded into a diesel at some stage.

Looking forward to the pics.

Try getting a hacksaw blade to the plastic at the back of the headunit housing will help to free up some space but will still be close on wires, :)

The diesel can be a frugal thing providing it's running right... Give it a good service with good oils etc, and make sure the MAF is functioning properly and you'll be fine!

I miss the 220bhp of my last car, but when I do double the mileage on the same amount of diesel it doesn't seem too bad (used to get 90 miles to £20, now get 110 to £10)! ;)

Welcome to being a fully fleged member..........

What are the niggles?

There are several threads on how to get around the stereo space problem.

David

Drivers door handles a bit loose
exhaust chav loud (has straight through with a single tiny backbox)
excess badges and brake light sticker (sorted and removed :tease: )
lack of decent mats (genuine MG ones are impossible to find)
EGR valve intermitent problem (i think, runs a little lumpy every now and then, it defo seems to be the result of the little electronic device on bulkhead which has two vac pipes on it)
Wheels battered and bruised
Only one fob, spare key is a standard item not original MG item (just bought blank key, gunna buy a new fob to get programmed)

Other than that sweet as a nut :) got some spare cash from performance bits i sold that i never fitted to my tubby so this will all be sorted by end of the week. It may have sounded a little misleading i'm no way disappointed I just strive to perfection, and missing my ZR a little :wavecry:

It's dark now think i'll go make love to my zs  :mml:

Tomorrow will be my bragging posts once i've gave it a once over

Door handle is a fairly common issue fitting a scrappy one should help, the threads on the handle itself where it bolts up seem to wear or snap, replace a few on the misses 400
Belive blanking the EGR is the way to go but best talk to peterzs or pete with the grey derv cant remeber his username are the best people to talk to, But doesnt sound as if theres anything major wrong :) Roll on the pic whoring :D

I was supprised how well it goes, it's got SDi Injectors & running 20PSI

It's got a private plate, which i'm selling already about to purchase my own ;)

My wheels are similar to yours, their Wolfrace equivilent to what you have but in shadown crome

Best way i found to fit the stereo was to remove the glovebox and push as much of the wiring for the stereo as you can down the hole to the left rear of the stereo housing. Then with the glovebox removed you should see where you've pushed the wires through the hole. Then i just pulled them through from the back.

When you say running at 20psi, is that peak?

Has it got a boost gauge installed? If not I would get one in soon as the recommended max is 19psi, any higher and you put unwanted stress on pretty much anything :(

I looked around all over the place to find a derv with the 180 kit and couldn't find one... We want pictures!!! :)

A friend of mine tells me it'll hapily run 25PSI, yes 20 is peak. It has got a boost guage. Is it normal for a DERV whilst driving to be always boosting something? it never goes into vac or is that normal?

If you run 25psi, then you'll blow it.. On standard internals anything over 20psi is very frowned upon, anything over this and you'll be asking for either HGF or a blown turbo and/or damaged oil seals. You'll also be seriously shortening the life span of the engine/drivetrain.

Due to the size of the turbo on the diesel (it is TINY - the turbo on my Smart Roadster was bigger!), it will always show some boost... While doing a steady 60mph you should see between 5psi and 8psi, depending on the type of road you're on... Using the engine to slow you down should use none.

As for the minimal vac, yes that is perfectly normal.. The diesel has no dump valve to release the pressure (like a petrol), as our engines need the boost to function properly. The wasegate will release excess pressure, but you'll never really hear it.

Hope that helps :)

will be turning boost down to 19PSI when i do my service. Looks like it's going to absolutely chuck it down, but i'm going to try give it a clean and get some dark photo's lol

20 will be ok, providing you don't run around on full boost all day ;)

There's a guy down in Somerset who does some amazing remaps for our cars, £220 will get you a map that should be worth 150bhp + 230lb-ft with your modifications :D

I'll find his URL in a min

stamford's been to reidy ... He's recommended and I think, Pete has taken his diesel to him. Not sure about 150 though ... :hmmm:

Yes it is, he'll map it on a RR so you'll get exactly what you're after!

SDi's on a mk2 derv will get you ~135bhp without a map, include the decat, exhaust and blank off the EGR and you'll easily get 150 :)

already made some ebay purchases :) a replacement fog light (mines cracked) the leather steering wheel with the thumb grips (loads better already got one for the miss's) and a blank key.

I'm going to buy a second fob as well, whats the going rate of getting one of those programmed to ecu? gunna buy a good quality second hand one to replace the casing on mine too as mine's a little grubby.

I paid £25 for two delivered, but they have gone up in price recently :(

Make sure that you get the correct one (two button for hatch, 3 for saloon), and that it comes with the correct barcode otherwise it's useless!

I have a 3 button fob sitting at home you can have if you want to replace the housing, I don't have the barcode so it can't be programmed though!

Programming ranges from place to place, I paid £35 at EMS to have 2 done, but the rate is about that for 1 anywhere else!

It is a 3 button fob for both hatch and saloon.

Looking good, personally am not a fan of the pillar pods but at least they're functional!

What is the other gauge for?

David
11-10-09, 05:19 PM
not a fan of pillar pods either, will be looking for alternate mounting points later, but it'll be fine for now. Top guage is boost, bottom is Oil Pressure

In the middle of the dash theirs that blank i may find some way of using that.

I am up to ideas on anyone with a MK2 for suitable OE look guage locations :)

I've got full dashboard software on my Windows Mobile, and have 'modified' a Nokia handsfree holder to hold my HTC Touch HD :)

Other people have installed the gauges in the middle air vents... If you use a smoked mirror gauge it looks quite cool and very OEM when off ;)

Bought some new seats last week, Blue Monaco's :) picked up, cleaned and fitted them today (will take some pics later)

Also was soooo sick of the loud exhaust i bought an off the shelf CAT back! the nice thing is the previous owner had the stainless system built up to OE joins sooo only needed the backbox! Happy Days :D Sounds lush, lovely and quiet :p just the way i like it :)

I sourced some MG Mats from my local rover dealer (no postage, saved myself £25 as of course i got mugged into buying two sets one for mine and one for the miss's lol)

Thats most of my little niggles knocked off

Bought a blank key but it was the wrong type sending that back
Exhaust sorted
Handle i'm going to repair at the weekend
The intermediate rough running on tickover still puzzles me, i think it may be the MAF on it's way out. The aftermarket filter looks like it hasn't been cleaned and oiled in a while will try that. Failing that will whip off the EGR and clean that.
Boost i've turned down, but it's still going to 21-22 in 5th, so it might have been doing more before  turning down seems to have stopped the oil around boost controller.
I need a new tyre as ones got about a 15" slash on the inside wall grr get my alloys refurbed (unless a set of 180's come up for around £200)

Next purchase will be two new LED interior bulbs in WHITE! god only knows what posses people to put blue ones in i mean really. On the LED note with the switch set to illuminate when door opens, with the door closed the LED emits a tiny amount of light, is that the migi's **** worth of power in the wires? I turn it to the off position not that the stupid blue light is much cop anyhow lol

Because i get paid every 4 weeks, in February I get paid twice with only one months bills so Donny Diesel will be getting a rather large order :) may even save a bit and buy all of the kit he does at once! absolutely marvelous! Off the shelf front mount, stainless turbo outlet, silicone as required, a quality oil catch tank (actually functions not just looks pretty) and the ported manifold and charge pipe. I think after all that and a reidy remap it'll be pulling like a freight train.

Other things i'll buy is the 180 front brakes (although i'm a little offput after the last time i went from 262 to 282 as i felt pedal went spongy.
Going to get my car booked in with a paintless dent remover to get her looking like brand new, then I think thats about it.

Sounds cool, I've been wanting to go the whole hog and get a MFIC installed, ported manifold done, some nice new charge pipes and a larger downpipe put on... Have never had the dosh though - Comes to a good £500-£600 quid!! :(

Your rough idle sounds exactly like the EGR sticking, giving it a good clean should do the job! :)

As for the 180 brakes, I'd recommend doing both front and rears.. I've got the full setup sitting in the garage that I've been meaning to put on, and some Goodridge braided hoses.. Just never got around to it! :(

Yeah I was just miffed that the @rse that I swapped with missed soo much off the description, and it was raining on the day we did the swap so difficult to swap. I was so honest with everything on mine

I've just about sorted all the little bits, changing the warped crappy EBC brakes in the morning weather forbid and changing me steering wheel. Mike take a few cheeky flicks of the new interior :p
