Slightly ot, but in this months Practical Classics there is an article about the DVLA clamping down on engine swaps, particularly non original engines being swapped, so will affect T16s into ZS/ZR as neither car was originally fitted with a T16, for as much as it will impact on us, the DVLA will want to know all about the origins of the new engine, so be wary of buying an engine without knowing the details of the car it came from.
When mine was done there was no problem because the engine came out of my old 420, but if you buy an engine with no history they can refuse to issue a V5, which will render the car undriveable. |
To be honest most people just use whatever engine number they can find as most are illegible due to old age on T16's now lol

I know what you're saying, but as I read it they want more than just the engine number, they want details about the donor car, it is all to cut down on the trade in stolen parts apparently.

Hey - Was just an idea - I was looking at a 1.6 as I fancy a cheap 2nd car which a 1.6 would be - but a turbo'd car wouldn't.
Yes you have to declare changes to the DVLA. Yes you have to insure the correct engine size to insurers. The tax band though - I'm sure - will not change as the emissions cannot be established and so remain as they were when the car was first registered. I reckon - and it's a guess - the one you refer to changed because the date of registration is where the tax is calculated purely on engine size - not emissions - as it has been since 2001 ? |
