Good point, you could buy a CAR with the belts done for £500 and have a whole set of other spares. Thats crazy.

Although personally I would never advise against letting the car into added time/mileage when it comes to belts, I do see your point though.

Take you time and work methodically and you will be fine ;) It's an engine not a space ship!! actually having 3 belts makes it easy if you do one at a time as there is reference point from the other two!!

Do you do the rears first ?

Seriously .... We all go on about the belts - but how many Mk1s are out there having done the 90K and being 11 - 12 years old and are still going strong.... Loads of them .... If you need the peace of mind - fair enough.

You can get an engine for £350.... with the rest of the car for another £150 thrown in !!!!

Couldn't agree more. For the cost of the belts to be done at some places you could buy another nice ZS from somewhere, maybe an even better one!!

There is a certain amount so financial sense if you are reliant on a garage doing the work or are not to bothered about the car? but it's still a risk of being stranded!! There are various posts on other forums stating that the KV6 belts are good for up to 150,000 miles or around 10-12 years and MGR were basically playing safe with the change interval they recommended!! I'm doing my 180's belts this year but i'm holding off as I want to do a tool-less guide at the same time!! I'm not worried that mine is 9 years old as it only done 63,000 miles and confident they won't fail before I change them!!

I've done 2 KV6 engines and both times I did the primary (front) belt first!! In fact both times i'v done the link (rear) belts some weeks later!!
Just make sure you lock the crank in the safe position before you start any belts and mark the pulleys so there is no chance of a fowl up!! When you ease the tension off the front belt you will see the cam pulleys turn 15° or so so it's just a case of turning them to the correct place when fitting the new belt front pulley first!! It may be possible to lock the cam using the link pulleys but I'v never tried that.
If you are not using the locking tools then DON'T undo the front cam pulleys bolts as the timing will be lost!!
If you have any questions pm me and I'll help out all I can!!
