Tablet Console build for M17TT180 - Complete
I have started this thread so I can give visual updates for Matt on his new console build.
This will be similar to mine but he has chosen a variety of options. He has a bluetooth and aux option for sound input through his head unit. He has requested that the console has the tablet, then stereo below and then the ATC unit. His choice of colour is the same as mine, black carbon effect. I will have music, video, obd through Torque, Sat nav, Internet and Internet radio (via phone data) but will also be able to be used as a normal tablet for apps games etc. The tablet will be easily removed where it can be charged and music etc added, plus it will be chargeable in car. The front end will be functional for the car and will be tailored to Matt's colour theme. I will update progress and for those who haven't seen mine, this is my set up: http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...psbrkhb0wp.jpg http://youtu.be/keh3Wf4Yzhk |
Will be looking at getting this done when a new zed arrives on the drive :)
|
This looks fantastic!! I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread :-)
|
Add me to the list when i get another ZS soon! :)
|
Well the console has arrived from Mark S, the tablet has been ordered, along with a few other bits and pieces, so the build will begin shortly!

Yay!

Got a Nexus 7 a month ago and now I want to do a build like this in the ZS as well! On the tablet side, I'm looking for a few more things that Nexus 7 doesn't have: - FM Radio (internet radio is great, but only works when you have a good data signal). - Slightly larger screen. Should be room for 8"+ ? - AD2P support for hands free via bluetooth. Tablet Talk app might be an alternative, although I believe it's not a perfect solution. I could run the tablet through my external amplifiers, so can live without a standard car stereo. How did you manage the tablet's hardware buttons? i.e. on/off switch and volume. controls? |

Blimey that was quick!
|
Pheelay, I use different apps to replace the power/volume buttons (however I have a slot above them that I can slide a flat keyring into if needed) Bear in mind that the rabbit is removable if a hard boot was required.
I use the likes of tasker as my tablet screen turns on when USB powered (ie ignition) and screen/bluetooth/wifi/GPS off when ignition off (and on when ignition on of course. Tasker also allows me to auto play the last track etc. I delay this for 15 seconds to allow for bluetooth to connect and I use the stereo controls to manage the volume. An 8" screen should be fine if it's not too tall (ie width wise) I have a head unit so have fm radio through that again using stereo controls on my steering column. I have tablet talk but have used it once so far! It's just there if I fancy it. Tasker can be set up to send people a text automatically when I'm in the car if I want. And again, my head unit does talk so I use that... once! Never saw the need to talk to people in the car although I know plenty do. Hope this helps a little and good luck with the build. Now back to Matt's!! Must start thinking about a custom front end! |
It sure was Matt! Was at the neighbours when I came home! I did request 24 hour delivery but as it hadn't arrived by afternoon, expected it tomorrow.
|
Most 24 hour couriers will deliver until quite late, otherwise they'd be paying out lots of compo for missed deliveries.
Infact I was astonished that out works courier (APC) managed to collect a parcel from us at around 5.30 one evening top of the m25 and deliver it to a customer in glasgow by 10am the next day! |

i like how youve put the centre console on they alloys, nice sales pitch, matt you have to buy these alloys now !!

Interesting methods. Thanks for the info! Tasker is amazing. Using it on my phone at the moment to set up things when I get in/out of the car.
Where is the head unit on your build? Dont see it in the pic in post #1! Just found an interesting video on a Sony HU that integretes with Android: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9zFDhy5Y3Y Good luck with the build! |
That's nice tablet integration only limited by the pretty boring app layout. The future is coming though.
Mine is in the glove box. I wanted a clean console without losing the oem look with the ashtray. Personal preference really but the more I plan this one, the more I think I will get rid of the ashtray for the stereo! |
Well over the last few days a bit of progress has been done.
A test fit was done for the combination planned with tablet at the top, followed by stereo then atc. Sadly the stereo need far more room than is provided even if the SCU is removed so it has been slightly rejigged to stereo, tablet, ATC. So the mock up of this configuration was made and fits perfectly so the placement was secured and the joins filled and roughly sanded. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...psrjfooukr.jpg Then a couple of coats of black were laid down to show up the imperfections to begin the fine tuning. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...psjbq16x64.jpg Due to the setup, the ATC unit takes up the ashtray section and about 5mm of space from the cubby hole area. I await a plastic sheet so I can recontour this area into useable space. Quick progress is being made so won't be long until this will be completed, hopefully within the week. |
Have now relocated the lighter socket to inside the cubby section.
|
Looks good. If you're at PoL tomorrow you can see my very quick and dirty tablet build :D

Yay lol. Hoping this one will look even more oem than mine. Standard with a hint of the future.
|
Hopefully it'll be ready to install for the bank holiday weekend
|
Not sure when that is lol but the progress will be quick over the next few days while I am off.
|
Next friday 18th and monday 21st
|
I envisage a completed project by then :D

Little bit of progress, not much more visually as I only need to wrap it!
Tablet is installed. It protrudes about 2-3mm which helps to remove it. This set up us for ease of taking it in and out of the car. After doing tons of research and experimenting on my own tablet, magnets appear to have no long term ill effects. I have install metal disks inside the table and magnets to the rear of the console and it seems to hold the tablet nice and firm without being impossible to remove. The temp sensor is relocated as is the lighter socket to the cubby hole area. All I need to do now is wrap the console and gaiter etc and test fit it to my car and run it about to make sure the vibrations don't knock the tablet loose. Other than that, it's setting up the console front end. Getting very close to completion! http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...psk3yjhgok.jpg |
It looks great, I wouldn't have the patience tbh, instant gratification rocks.
|
Today was the greatest success. Test driven in my car and it took all my might not to refund Matt and keep it for myself! It's like mine but better!
Wrapped and ready http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...pssfley4l1.jpg Side by side with my first build thats in my car http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...psyygo19b1.jpg In the car but Matt just needs to fit his clock http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...ps5geukzrb.jpg Flash on so you can see clearer (not a fair representation to be honest) http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...psqclt87lt.jpg OBD bluetooth working well http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...psk3oniubx.jpg And finally a wee video teaser with some of it's functions http://youtu.be/lp4yF6fZ-rA Hopefully Matt is happy with the end product as it has been a labour of love all completed by hand! And if anyone else is sold and want's one, you only need to ask (and supply funds!) |
That's a great job there pal - well done.
|
Looks great!
|
