Is your car an MG or Rover?
As the title suggests this is a debate about branding. I have very strong views on this but I'm not posting just yet! I'm just interested what others have to say. :cylon:
|
mine is an mg, it says so on the v5. i have on occasion referred to it as a rover (generally when somethings wrong lol) tbh if it had been produced with a rover badge i would still have bought it tho. When i 1st got my zr i hated ppl calling it a rover but now it doesnt bother me.
|
I call mine an MG but i dont mind if people call it a rover.
It does say rover on the rear lights. |
MG through and through. Like Craig says, that's what it says on the V5. One of my friends has an Escort RS Cosworth and always refers to my car as a Rover. My arguement to him is that whilst he may be an RS owner, it says Ford on the tax dics and on the V5 where as the MG just happens to share it's factory and basic shape with Rover ! He says that MG is to Rover what RS is to Ford. Utter rubbish. RS's are occasional specials whereas MG's are a brand in there own right. They're not badged Rover anywhere and no documents contradict this. A Rovers a Rover, MG's an MG ! :)

Well said matt
|
mines is an mg my last one was an mg the two before that were rovers and i am proud to say that all four cars are and were superb

"Yes!" I tend to not get sucked into the argument TBH. I know what my car is, if people are too ignorant to know the difference then that's their problem, not mine :) |

Also, Ford and there RS's your mate is true in some respects, MG were totally independant of the big car makers until the merger with British Leyland with all its brands inc Jaguar, now look at Jaguar, many folk reckon that the new "XF" is a New Ford Mondeo, which it is really albeit stretched!!! anyway so your right, and you mate is also right. You have also got to remember that the ZS180 is no where near is sister car Rover 400/45 as the with Ford's RS's, MGRover used the basic shell and some production components used in the Rover 400/45, but under the bonnet and powertrain it is a totally different car as anyone will know. BTW, the Focus RS is just a basic Focus CL, did you know that the windscreen in Focus RS is thinner that a production Focus!!, and did you know that the Antiroll bar in the ZS180 is thicker than the one used in the Rover 45 2.0 V6!!! |

When William Morris started the MG brand in 1924 one of it's core values was as an affordable sports car and even back in those days MG' were badge engineered cars that were recognised as being a brand on there own. RUF converts Posches in Germany but RUF is recognised as a seperate car manufacturer. Yes, i know the Focus RS is based upon a CL, much in the same way the original Cosworth was based upon the peasent spec' 3 door L model. And no i wasn't aware about the anti-roll bar but it reinforces again how different the MG is from the Rover ! :) |
Kev, how many Shredded Wheat have you had this morning?
Far too many in my book ;) Ah, answer!, I call mine an MG, others say Rover, I say whatever! I don't really care as I own it and I drive and I wipe the floor with my 'Rover'.................then they don't call it a Rover................oh no far too embarrassing for them to be whipped by a humble Rover! :D |

Mine is an MG made by the MG Rover group. So it isnt an MG it is an MG/Rover.
I cant understand why people are so worried about their car being called a rover. I mean it was longbridge engineers who designed both and IMHO Rovers were very good 2 (i mean any of the Tseries turbo'd cars would give the ZS180 a dam good run for its money). I am proud of my cars heritage and the fact it was designed with the slush fund money from a failing company. I mean look at it this way if they had the multi million pound design budgets of the likes of ford or GM then just imagine what class beaters they would have produced in both Rover and MG flavours. At the end of the day anyone who puts any of the rover or MG brand down has obviously never driven one and seen just how good they are. |

I call it an MG cos thats what the badge says, others say its a fancy Rover...whatever suits, I'd love my car even if it was called a Lada
|
I love my car (and Karen ofc!) and its an MG.......simple as that.
I really did enjoy driving it today it was a total hoot  I already need more power though....oh and traction....oh and stiffer suspension LMFAO! Its the best vehicle I have ever owned and I am keeping her! Smitten Jim |
MG, but others can call it what they want.... I know what it is and i like it so i don't care. :p
|
MG
|
well i have always thought mine was an MG due to the shape and model etc, but appreciate its rover roots :)
its all good tho, could be worse :D |
MG but it has a Rover heart.
(ZR with a 220 Turbo conversion) |
Hello Boys and girls, I'm new to the site, but not to the brand. I hav worked in Car design for the last 16 years, and during that time have benefited fro working at Jaguar(Fuels cooling and Exhausts)(Rover- Lngbridge, and Gaydon) and for the last 4 years, in Chassis at Nissan in Milton Kaynes, although I have taken 3 months out to cream the cash working in Zurich,,,, I digress. I have had the privledge of owning 1 Rover 25 1.6, and 1 Rover 45 Diesel (Pearl and Oyster, to those who worked at Longbridge) and then I moved onto 2 MGZS+, first was the exact car(in Red wine metalic) that you see on the handbook,it was uncle Ken's company car (Ken was the prototype workshop manager at Longbridge and his car, later mine, was full of spec). It was lovely except it wa the diesel, nothing wrong with diesels, but I like more speed, Any way, I now have a 180 as pictured on my Profile, and here is where it gets interesting for those wanting an answer to this conundrum. When the nice man looking after chassis dynamics for the MG ZR and S aksed if he could tweek the suspention to make the MG badged cars different, he was told, yes. Just so long as the parts are all the same and shared by Honda (that way Rover voided any tooling bill). So Mark Anderson, went and turned the front control linkages upside down, and in that small engineering master stroke, changed the handling of the chassis. this is why the MG's handle far better than the rovers.
Keep in touch, I like the thought of us all loving our cars. Rob |
so what you are really saying now is....
'Is your car MG, Rover or Honda?' :) |
It's an ickle bit of everything all made with love!
|
I found out last night who designed the bodykit for the ZS & SV & b*gg*r me I cant remember his name...Peter ?????
|
Did you mean Peter Stevens? He designed the MG range and the McLaren F1, not to mention the Subaru Impreza WRC.
|
Well done mate, thats him.
Very impressive portfolio. Reading up on him last night. Won quite a few awards for the SV. |
I'm happy for mine to be considered a Rover. It's just been tinkered with to improve the dynamics.
If I hadn't had such a good experience over 120k miles (90k in under 3 years) with a 400 diesel saloon, I would have bought a civic type R or a leon cupra wihtout considering the ZS. Just as well the rover looked after me - the ZS is the best drive of those three (and was the cheapest to buy new!) My zed has also been referred to as a Leyland - made me smile. |
Id say MG, but don't mind it being called a Rover ZS!
When people try to mock it, by calling it a Rover, I just agree, then they stumble because they were wanting to wind me up! :bounce: |
same here Mattie, if you show you aint bothered it takes the wind out of their sails.
|
Same here, just let them get on with it, it will wind them up more than us!
|
I call mine an MG but dont give a **** what anyone else calls it, because it isnt theirs!
|
MG
|
My ZS is an MG. If asked I say it's like a Rover 400 ;)
My 216 cabriolet is a Rover. The question most often asked is 'Aren't the parts difficult to get?' to which I reply 'Unlike [insert manufacturer of their car]'s, you don't need to buy parts very often'. :) S |
If I wanted a Rover I would have bought one.
Mines a MG |

I said I couldn't compare Rover dealers to BMW dealers as I'd only returned for warranty work on one occasion in four Rovers and one MG! To add insult to injury - consumables for a ZS180 are bargain basement priced in my opinion.:greedy: |
