Project keep me sane.
Ello gents,
I recently smashed my other knee up at the RAF Judo Championships, hence the thread title. I'm out of action once again and I need something to focus on. So, had the motor a while now and love it a lot. I really want to play with it and make some changes. I had my sights set on breaking into the 300 club but I'm told this would cost massive bucks. What I'm after knowing is what is my best plan of attack for tuning up the car? I don't have a huge budget, but I do want to squeeze the most out of the engine. Any and all tips would be massively welcomed :) |
Unfortunately the KV6 is limited in that department. 200 is an achievable figure with breathing and remap mods. 210 possible with cams but that is starting to enter big money area again compared to the cars worth. Pretty sure more is there but quite how much more is never printed. Most go for T16 for more and a lower budget. My next step may well be nitrous for that bit of fun ;)

I'd be making it more comfitable, heated seats, cruise, rear electrics.........

Why nobody has ever fitted a b18c vtec engine from an MB6 civic and boosted it is beyond me.
Cost of the engine, gearbox, shafts etc and fitting (AWM have done at least 1 into a ZR so can't see it being a problem, plus the MB6 is the same chassis). Then loads of companies do turbo kits, race tech has a good rep, see link below. 350 bhp on stock internals is considered "safe" http://www.race-tech.net/index.php?m...products_id=39 |

One of the reasons is it being mounted with the gearbox at the drivers side, the only bubble 400 that used that configuration was the 416 auto.
It is plainly doable but maybe the fabrication and wiring changes put a lot of people off the idea |
560bhp at 12psi !!!
http://www.ek9.org/index.php?threads...anzai-d.66386/ I think the honda motors look lovely too. |
800bhp on high boost!!!!!, my money, here take it !
|
Be interesting to know what AMW would charge for a drive in drive out conversion. I can't imagine it being massively different to their price for putting a T16 into a ZR.
I guess the Honda parts are more expensive though. |
some honda parts are expensive, others surprisingly are not, a friend is having the same firm as did the 560bhp civic build him a k24 production class race engine, unlike the other high revving hondas this motor will rev to 7200rpm and do 250bhp nasp. there is a clear upgrade path to over 300hp!
250 may not sound much - they do a b16a nasp with 250bhp - but its the torque that the k24 has that will make it fast, even in a big old barge race car as the cl7 accord. |
I really want to go down the Honda route in the TD eventually. The advantages over Rover engines are pretty huge if you want high power and reliability for relatively sensible money. Track car is the main resource sponge at the minute though :)

Cheers so far gents! |
T series is the name of the previous engine to the K series.
It is a 16v 2.0L available as NASP or turbo, most use T16 for the turbo version. It uses a PG1 gearbox, basically the same as the box in the ZS180 and because the T16 was used in some Rover 400s it is quite an easy fit into the ZS. |

Clueless seller alert, he claims it's a K series from his 420.
|
And it's come from an older R8 model so has a tin sump instead of the alloy one for fitting in a zs, people have run nasp T16's at low boost, maybe 4 or 5 psi with fair results

Had a good ole' google around and not really found anything other than that one on ebay. Can anyone point me in the right direction or is it literally a case of waiting for something to become available? |
This is much better value http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-400-...3D252116312329

Have a word with AMW motorsports (they have a website and are on facebook) they do all sorts although I have no direct experience of them myself, I've never heard a bad thing about them. An old friend had a 1.8vvc transplanted into a 1.4 rover 45 and the work seemed good. |
Ok, so I definitely am interested in eventually souping up the old motor, but I've decided to tackle all the basics things first, she has a reem of cosmetic things that need fixing up just to get her to standard, so I've made a list.
Repair drivers side window Fix environmental controls Replace bonnet. Repair chips to windscreen Replace front diffuser Repair/replace front mesh grill Repair/replace keyed panels Repair windscreen seal Fix boot lid spring/get gas struts Manifold still needs tackling Once that's out of the way, I probably will look at the following Uprate induction Uprate exhaust system Maybe uprate headlights Install "privacy glass" to rear windows Uprate HT leads and Sparks Any thoughts on this? |
Sounds like a resonable list.
For privacy glass check ebay for pre-cut kits for the civic. The BMC-CDA 150/85 is the one listed for the 180, if you search ebay for the 150/85 they come up for other cars but will fit if you supplie your own hoses. If you are replacing the headlights do it at the same time as repairing the bumber mesh as the bumper has to come off to remove the headlights. How are you planning to uprate the headlights? I have a virtually brand new pair of mk1 lights with clear indicator lenses and uprated bulbs for sale (shameless plug), as they are scratch free and UV damage free they are much much brighter than your current ones, pmail if interested. |
And I have a bonnet in resonable condition in yellow.
